There is a strange and little-known story to be found in Exodus 17 that has a good message for us as the Pastor Nominating Committee begins the mission study process for the congregation. The people of Israel are only weeks into their journey from the Red Sea to the foot of Mt. Sinai when they encounter their first group of hostile people: When the Israelites were at Rephidim, they were attacked by the Amalekites. So Moses told Joshua, Have some men ready to attack the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on a hilltop, holding this walking stick that has the power of God. Joshua led the attack as Moses had commanded, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur stood on the hilltop. The Israelites out-fought the Amalekites as long as Moses held up his arms, but they started losing whenever he had to lower them. Finally, Moses was so tired that Aaron and Hur got a rock for him to sit on. Then they stood beside him and supported his arms in the same position until sunset. That s how Joshua defeated the Amalekites. (Contemporary English Version) For me, this story is a parable about the power of working together. Moses could not impart God s power and blessing to the people all by himself. When he tried, he became exhausted. He needed Aaron and Hur to be literally his right- and left-hand men. When they worked together, Israel prevailed in the battle. HTPC has elected a Pastor Nominating Committee of five to undertake the search for a new pastor. The initial part of their process, however, is the responsibility of the entire congregation. The PNC needs your input in discerning and defining what God s mission will be, in and through this church. To that end, the Committee is drafting a survey which will be offered through the various groups of the church, as well as to individuals, including our winter visitors. You may end up with several opportunities to answer the questions on the survey. This is okay, especially if you are part of a group session! The back-and-forth of discussion in the group might lead you to new insights or suggestions. All answers are important! Your other important task is prayer. This is our 2018 equivalent of holding up Moses arms. The PNC has quite a road ahead of them. Starting in the fall they will be holding weekly meetings as they begin to receive and read dossiers from ministers interested in being the church s next pastor. The PNC (Cheryl Gabe, Luanne Putnam, Larry Raber, Janet Rivero and Charles Schnuth) will need you to hold up their arms by praying for them, as well as offering verbal encouragement. God already knows who the next pastor for HTPC will be. Let us pray for God s wisdom and discernment as we seek to be faithful to His leading. Joy in Christ, RC Smith Pastor RC & Barbara Smith General Assembly The 223 rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church will meet in St. Louis, June Pastor RC will be attending along with his wife, Barbara. He is willing to send reports on the Assembly via to anyone interested in receiving them. Please him at revrc5@aol.com to indicate your interest.

They do this in many ways. They make phone calls, home visits, hospital and rehab facility visits. They send cards, deliver prayer shawls and assist with memorial services. Coming up, Congregational Care is teaming up with Fellowship for some fun this summer. Some off-site restaurant trips are being planned and a fun Christmas in July potluck will be held in Fellowship Hall. Watch for details of these events. We hope to see you there! 3 Page 3 June 2018 Pastor Nominating Committee Report The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) is conducting a mission study to identify the needs of our congregation and community. The purpose is to develop a roadmap that defines the congregation and describes a sense of direction for the future mission of our church. This will assist us in our search for a Called Pastor. The PNC is requesting the assistance of HTPC groups in gathering information for our mission study. During upcoming meetings, members of our HTPC groups will be asked to respond to questions regarding the mission of the church and characteristics of our Called Pastor. For those congregational members who are not currently active in a church group or have already left the Ft. Myers area for the summer, the PNC will provide an opportunity for them to participate. The members of the PNC are Cheryl Gabe/Moderator, Luanne Putnam/Scribe, Larry Raber, Janet Rivero, and Charles Schnuth. Advising the PNC are Interim Pastor RC Smith and Rebecca Nicholson/Committee on Ministry, Peace River Presbytery. HTPC Pastor Nominating Committee Mother s/father s Day Dinner on May 11th with the Calendar Girls providing entertainment. Father s Day - June 17th PRESBYTERIAN MEN The Lee County Sheriff s Department has been asked to make a presentation to our breakfast group on active shooter and church safety. LCSO will do this at a special Breakfast Meeting on July 27 th, which will take the place of our Aug. 6 th meeting. Watch the Sunday Bulletin and the poster in the Narthex as we approach that date. All will be invited to this breakfast meeting. At our May meeting we had 14 people enjoy a delicious breakfast. Our next men s meeting breakfast will be on June 1 st. Join us by signing the sheet in the church Narthex. Upcoming Events: Breakfast Mtg. Friday, Jun. 1 st 9:00 A.M. Fellowship Hall Breakfast Mtg. Friday, Jul. 6 th 9:00 A.M. Fellowship Hall Please join the Men s Group and get involved. It is only one Friday morning a month. All men in the community are welcome at our meetings. Come and enjoy great food and fellowship! Jerry Strohmenger, Secretary PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN The annual Presbyterian Women's Mothers' Day/Fathers' Day Dinner was another success. The food was plentiful and everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoyed The Calendar Girls. Thanks to all who helped make it a success. On Monday, May 14, our last Council meeting was held until September. This meeting was followed by a luncheon at Magnolia Landing, which included our Moderator Emeritus, Aileen Reese, installing Carol Dant as Vice Moderator and Nancy Rad as Secretary. There are a couple of appointed positions yet to be filled, but we hope to have this task completed by the time we meet next. Even though we do not have a Council meeting during the summer, we have one more project coming up and that is the backpacks. In July we will be asked for donations of school supplies (check the list that will come out in the church bulletin and also the July "Messenger"). Betty Robertson, Fran Smith, Sue Buckout and Sue White have agreed to head up this project. Thanks gals. More about this project next month. UPCOMING EVENTS: Dorcas Circle/Bible Study (meeting through the summer) Wednesday, June 6 10:00 A.M. Janet Rivero

4 Page 4 June 2018 Music Department May was another month of our very devoted and talented choir singing great anthems and the praise band going strong, all for the glory of God. Summer choir starts the first week of June and goes through July. There is plenty of room for more people in the summer choir. Just come on any Thursday in June at 6:30 in the Sanctuary, and of course, one does not need to read music, but just love to sing. Blessings to all, Paul Brewer, Music Director WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Alma Keller Alma moved to Lake Fairways from South Lyon, Michigan. 5 Page 5 June 2018 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION The Christian Education Committee is looking for new members to join our Committee, and you don t even have to teach a class! We are always open to suggestions for an adult study from anyone in the congregation. Please think about what kind of class or subject would entice you to come to a study on Sunday morning and let us know. If you would like to join the Christian Education Committee or offer your ideas, please see me or Committee members Janet Rivero, Jane Robinson, or Wilma Jenkins. We meet on the first Thursday of the month at 12:30 P.M. in Room 4. We d love to have you join us. Future articles will highlight Rally Day and new Bible studies for the Fall. We wish everyone a safe, healthy summer and look forward to the return of our snowbirds. Janet Daly, Vice-Chair Missions When we toured the Beacon of Hope on Pine Island on May 15 th, the Committee and friends, including RC, were taken to the GED classroom. We were able to see the students with their tutors, former teachers, and sense the dedication and determination of both students and teachers. You would have been proud to see your monetary support in action. The students were not fluent in English, to say nothing of their lack of academic preparation. But there was a positive feeling that they would succeed. Of course, we checked out the Thrift Shop and made our contributions there. From the Beacon of Hope we headed to the last restaurant in St. James City. Now, if this kind of experience appeals to you, check with me about becoming a member of our committee. We always need new ideas. Our next goal concerns helping people fight the bugs of our rainy season. Thank you for your contributions which support these projects. Larry Raber, Chair EVANGELISM SAVE THE DATE, SUNDAY, JUNE 24TH AT 3:00 P.M. The Committee will be hosting again an Ice Cream Social followed by a Movie. The newly released DVD of the Movie "I Can Only Imagine" will be presented at 4:00 PM. This movie is the story of the song of the same name, which was written by Bart Millard, as a tribute to Billie Graham. I Can Only Imagine is a 2018 American Christian drama film directed by the Erwin Brothers. Growing up in Greenville, Texas, Bart Millard suffers physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, Arthur. When Arthur becomes terminally ill, he finds redemption by embracing his faith and rediscovering his love for his son. Years later, Bart's troubled childhood and mended relationship with his dad inspires him to write the hit song "I Can Only Imagine" as singer of the Christian band "Mercy Me". The Committee recently held a series of Membership Matters classes and the three members of the class became members of Holy Trinity, professing that their Savior is Jesus Christ. We welcome them into our church family. There will be another series of classes in the fall, so if anyone is planning on becoming a member of Holy Trinity please contact the office or Beverly Smith. Fran Smith and Betty Robertson announced that they are planning another outing for "Holy Trinity on the Go" sometime in late summer or early fall. Suggestions will be accepted, so please give your ideas to either Fran, Betty, or me. So far this year 87 First Time Visitor Packets have been given out to new people who have crossed our threshold. Remember to welcome each visitor so that they feel at home in Holy Trinity. We are all Disciples of Christ in bringing these individuals into the Kingdom of God. Beverly Smith, Chair Fellowship Fellowship is sponsoring "Offs and Ons" this summer. On June 14, we have scheduled an off campus Dutch Treat' supper, ordering off the menu at Sabal Springs at 4 P.M. (Summer choir will have plenty of time to eat and be at Church for practice.). Bring your happy face and maybe a joke - laughter and fun are our goals. Sign up Sundays for reservations on June 3 and June 10. A heads up for the "on campus" planned for July - a hint, "Christmas in July." We will be honoring Fathers and Sons on Father's Day, June 17. Fellowship appreciates Priscilla Circle of PW for making cute objects for us that we have given out this year. June 4 at 10 A.M. is Fellowship's next committee meeting in Fellowship Hall. Consider this an invitation to join us. Jane Robinson & Nancy Rad, Co-chairs

6 Page 6 June 2018 CHURCHES VISITED I visited St. Agnes Church of Blackwood, NJ on April 21 st to attend my Great Grandchild s First Holy Communion. It was quite a beautiful affair, one I have never witnessed before. This was followed by a big party attended by all the relatives. Never knew I had so many. Someone from our church visited The Cathedral of S. Matthew at South Bend, Indiana and brought us a very lovely bulletin that included all their Church Services in April. It listed many fund raisers, and many sounded like fun. Please remember us in your travels this summer. It s always good to hear where you ve been. Barbara Nase Buildings and Grounds Volunteers are urgently needed to serve on the Buildings and Grounds Committee. If you have a few hours to spare and can help out, please see John Strickland; or, come to the Buildings and Grounds Committee Meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 3:00 P.M. John Strickland, Chairman FINANCE COMMITTEE Our finances including income and expenses are on target through April. Our income for April was $25, and our expenses $22, leaving a surplus for the month of $2, The small monthly surpluses during season will help us through the summer months meet our expenses when our attendance is down. We received an anonymous donation of $30,000 in April with the stipulation that $10,000 go directly toward the mortgage principle and $20,000 be deposited in our Capital Future Expansion Account. Thank you one and all for your generosity. The Finance Committee is still seeking members of Holy Trinity to serve on a sub-committee to develop a plan and all details for our Fall Stewardship Campaign. If you are able to serve your church in whatever little way you can please give contact me or Pastor RC. Again, thank you for your continued support to Holy Trinity. Pat Colucci, Chair Thank You I would like to thank all my Holy Trinity Family for helping to make my Confirmation a big success. A big Thank You to my mentor, Pat Maxwell, and Rev. Smith. Thank you all, Marley Worship Committee During the summer months when many of our members and friends have gone north, we look forward to your continued attendance at the service of your choice, as we will continue to have two services every Sunday. Please welcome everyone near you as we try to keep our attendance up. Also, please remember to sign the attendance book every week and pass it along your row. In July, Pastor R.C. will be doing a 4 week sermon study on our Presbyterian beliefs. Watch the bulletin for more details. Submitted by Ruth and Terry Rickard
