2 FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR Dear friends at Lewinsville, Stewardship is a word that, for many people, conjures up thoughts of a fall campaign to raise money and motivate financial commitments for the coming year. These are not always welcome thoughts! Some people do not like the word stewardship, and more than one preacher has been known to groan at the mere mention of the word. But the truth is that stewardship is a beautiful word, and it refers to something far more, and far deeper, than a fall fundraising campaign. Stewardship is a comprehensive term that is deeply connected to vocation and to the discernment of gifts. Ultimately, stewardship is about how we are called to live, in the light of the gifts that God has given us. A steward is someone who manages or looks after the property of someone else. One person (the property owner) gives a certain property to someone else (the steward) to look after. In a Christian sense, God has given us everything that we are, everything that we have and invites us to manage these things, use them, and live with them in ways that glorify the One who has given them to us in the first place. These things that God gives us include our money, but they go far beyond our money. God gives us our energy. God gives us our passions and desires. God gives us our personality and temperament. God gives us time and space in which to live. All of these are gifts God has given to us. God then invites us to use these things our time, our particular quirky personalities, our energy, our passions in ways that bring glory to God and that contribute to the healing of the world. Every day we are given the opportunity to act as stewards of the gifts given to us by God. In any conversation, we can use our gifts of attention to build up the person with whom we are talking. At work, we can use our gifts of energy and creativity to bring beauty, order, and goodness into the world. At school, we can use our gifts of energy to learn, study, and understand the world around us. At the homeless shelter, we can use our gifts of time and open-heartedness to treat people with the dignity they deserve. In times of prayer, we can use the precious gift of time to commune with God. All day long, we have the opportunity to live as stewards of the gifts God has given us. Isn t stewardship a beautiful word? Many blessings for your journey, Pastor Scott ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF CHURCH OFFICERS Sunday, May 21 On Sunday, May 21, we will have the pleasure of ordaining and installing your new Ruling Elders and Deacons at Lewinsville Presbyterian. Those who have not previously served in these positions will be ordained and installed, which will involve receiving the laying on of hands. This is an ancient Christian custom (see Acts 6:5-6) by which a Christian community, by the power of the Holy Spirit, confers authority upon leaders. The image is of an ancient chain of leadership, stretching back through time, by which authority is passed on from one generation to another. The significant meaning of this is that Christian leaders do not authorize themselves. Any authority that we exercise is given to us by someone else and is given for the well-being of the community. Please hold your new class of Ruling Elders and Deacons in your prayers. Ruling Elders, Class of 2020: Steve Becker, Elaine Guth, Harriet Neldon, Adrian Steel Deacons/Stephen Ministers, Class of 2020: Andrew Borene, Verna Chenault, Sharon Gamble, Janie Waldrop QUARTERLY LEADERS MEETING Sunday, May 21 On Sunday, May 21, following the 11:00 worship, the leaders of the 5 Ministry Groups will gather for the next installment of the Quarterly Leaders Meeting. (This meeting has been rescheduled from earlier in April.) The purpose of these meetings is to align the work of the different Ministry Groups, and to ensure that we are all pulling in the same direction as we work together. We ll be checking in on the church s priority for 2017, to learn about and minister to the needs of younger generations, to see what has already happened in that, how it s going, and what needs to be done next. If you have any suggestions about how a particular Ministry Group might shape their work to learn about and serve younger generations, reach out to the leaders of that Ministry Group or speak to Pastor Scott or Pastor Emily. 2 C L A I M E D C A L L E D S E N T

4 SUMMER MISSION PROJECT For the past 27 years Lewinsville has gone out into the world and met people in their time of need. From natural disaster assistance to combating homelessness, the Summer Mission Project (SMP) has done a remarkable job at serving others in their time of need. This June 25 July 1, SMP will embark for the 28th summer. Our group will be heading to Johns Island, South Carolina where we will be working with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to frame houses. We desire your support for this vital ministry of Lewinsville in 3 ways: First, we would love for you to join us. SMP thrives off of intergenerational participants with any skill level. The age minimum to participate is entering high school sophomores and older. You can sign up at smp.lewinsville.org. Second, we ask that you pray for our group. Pray as we prepare to go to South Carolina. Pray for the families whose houses we will be working on. Pray that the Spirit works within us and the community of Johns Island. Pray for traveling safety, safety on the job sites, and for favorable weather. Pray that we have the words to properly tell the story of why do this year after year. Third, we invite you to financially support the mission of Summer Mission Project. We cannot do what we do without the backing of the Lewinsville congregation. The longevity of SMP is due to the gracious support of the congregation. And for this we are immensely grateful. Donations can be made at online-giving and through our envelope fundraiser located in St. Andrews Hall during the month of May. Thank you for your support of Summer Mission Project. Summer Mission Project is a successful ministry because of the cheerleading, participation, and prayers from the whole Lewinsville community. Mark your calendars for July 2 as we invite you to join us in worship led by the returning SMP crew. YAVS AT LEWINSVILLE May 7 The Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs) are a vital part of the Presbyterian fabric. Part of this year s Pentecost special offering from Lewinsville will go to directly support the Washington DC YAV program. On May 7th we are excited to be welcoming a few of the YAV s serving local to worship. Join us as we hear more about the YAV program and their experiences in serving. 6 MCLEAN SYMPHONY AT LEWINSVILLE June 4 at 7:00 p.m. The McLean Symphony was established in 1971 as an all-volunteer chamber orchestra and has had a single conductor for all this time, Maestro Dingwall Fleary. During its history it has been dedicated to providing good music at affordable prices to area residents. We will welcome the Symphony to Lewinsville on June 4 at 7:00 pm in a concert that will feature our organ played by organist David Lang. David received his Bachelor of Music in choral music education and sacred music from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. He attained his Master of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Louisville. Lang came to the Washington D.C. area in Over the years, he has gained prominence as a leading professional accompanist, vocal coach, concert organist, and choral conductor. Now in his seventh season as artistic director for the Reston Chorale, Lang concurrently serves as Director of Music at Saint Dunstan s Episcopal Church in McLean, Virginia and as keyboard artist for Washington Hebrew Congregation. He will be performing the Symphony No. 1 for Organ and Orchestra in D Minor, Op. 42 by Alexandre Guilmant in our Sanctuary on our Gress-Miles organ. Tickets may be purchased by going to the McLean Symphony website or the link shown at Please remember to SHARE. We collect non perishable dry and canned goods to deliver to SHARE, which serves people in our area. SHARE needs pasta, pasta sauce, juice, sugar and cooking oil. NO OUT OF DATE OR OPENED PRODUCTS. They are not accepted and are thrown out. While, collection is the first Sunday of the month, donations are accepted at any time in the basket in the narthex. The PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) has spent late March/ early April working to finalize the MIF (Ministry Information Form -- a document which describes our congregation, its mission, and the pastor we are seeking). We ve worked to incorporate insights from the listening session held on March 26th and a meeting with the youth of the church held earlier in the month, to gather statistical information about the congregation and the local area, and to identify outside references who can help candidates understand our congregation. The Session will consider the MIF at its April meeting, and we hope to have received approval from them and our Presbytery liaison by mid-may. Once the approval process is complete, we will post the MIF on the Lewinsville website and begin advertising the position. We will let the congregation know once the position is officially posted, and would appreciate your help in bringing the MIF to the attention of potential candidates, or people who might know of potential candidates. In the meantime, we thank you for your continued prayers, for us and for the person whom God is calling to be Lewinsville s next Senior Pastor. Cathy Saunders for the PNC WANTED: Greeting Cards The Shepherd s Center of McLean, Arlington, and Falls Church (SCMAFC) has over 200 clients who are provided free rides to medical appointments. This is one of the organizations supported through Lewinsville's Mission and Service budget. Besides free transportation, another service that is provided by SCMAFC are birthday cards sent to each client, some of whom are isolated with no living family or friends. Many of us receive free greeting cards, unsolicited, in the mail from various non-profit organizations. It would be very helpful if you would donate these cards to the SCMAFC for their use in bringing a friendly greeting on the birth date of their clients. Birthday cards, blank cards, thinking of you cards all are needed. Please put the cards in an envelope or bag in the church s Volunteer Office (throughout the year as you accumulate them) with Betty Douglass name. Help bring cheer to some older adults in our community. 6 C L A I M E D C A L L E D S E N T

7 BUILDING BEAUTIFICATION FACILITIES MINISTRY/BUILDING TASK FORCE TODAY AND TOMORROW There is a lot to report on the facilities changes that are going on at Lewinsville. FACILITIES MINISTRY First let s talk about the organizational change that has come about as a result of the Session s Structural Task Force. A renewed emphasis has been placed on the Facilities Ministry. Under Management Ministry Group leadership, the Facilities Ministry has developed a budget for 2017 that will address both building maintenance and current year projects to improve the appearance, safety and comfort of the church. Since the first of the year, there have been projects that have enhanced the handicap entrance way by improving the appearance of the entry and preventing washout of mulch and soil into our drainage system near the Music Director s office. Sanctuary lighting has been upgraded and replacement fixtures have been installed to restore spotlighting and brighten the overall lighting. In addition, new dimmer switches have been installed that will allow us to tone down the brightness of the lighting and provide for a softer, dusky light. This will help provide the proper mood for our evening services. Upcoming projects include replacement of electrical panels; while not as glamorous as the exterior wall and plantings, the replacement will provide for a safer environment and reduce the possibility of an electrical outage due to outdated fuses verses new circuit breaker panels. Regular building maintenance items such as restroom spruce-ups, painting projects around the church, parking lot pothole repair and general clean-up all are being planned for BUILDING TASK FORCE In June of 2016 the Session authorized the establishment of the Building Task Force. The Task Force was charged with: Identifying what building projects are to be done, Who has responsibility for them, How the projects will be financed and who is accountable for the coordination and completion of the projects. The Task Force members are Tim Dokken, Jim Edmondson, Michele Gottke, Lori Gray, Pattie Gunter, Carole Huston, Wendy Maiwurm, Adrian Steel, and staff Bob Clark and Rev. Scott Ramsey. To date the Task Force has reviewed the outstanding projects that were a part of a laundry list of project opportunities that needed funding and action. Some of the projects were given to the Facilities Ministry as described above, others will be incorporated into renovation work this year and a larger project that will include restroom renovations, entryway enhancements and many other building improvements that will prepare the building for many years ahead. One of the first steps that the Task Force has taken is to have a Building Reserve Study conducted. The study will provide the current status of all the building and grounds elements, including the lifespan of our building systems, furnishings, and outside property (Manse, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. ) plus it will provide the replacement cost over the course of the next 40 years. This study will be especially valuable to the Facilities Ministry as it does future planning. Another step will be gathering input from ministries of the church, staff, and interested individuals to determine the types and scale of facilities they expect to need to fulfill their respective missions. Future endeavors of the Task Force include (with the help of designers and architects) visioning the scope of the project to be done, determining the cost associated with the vision, the way in which the project will be paid for, a capital campaign, or similar vehicle and who will carry out the project both in terms of fund raising and in construction. There is a great deal of enthusiasm around both the short-term facilities projects and the project that is on the horizon for the renovation of and possible additions to of the church buildings and grounds. Watch for upcoming updates on how we are progressing and also enjoy the enhancement that are accomplished by the Facilities Ministry over the weeks, months, and years ahead. 8 1724 CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD MCLEAN, VIRGINIA SESSION PLANNING DAY June 3 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, June 3, your Session will be having a day-long Planning Day. In past years, the Session has held a weekend-long retreat in November. We are moving to a schedule where that weekend-long planning retreat will be held in the spring, to provide for a more orderly planning process for the church. This year (a transition year), we will be holding a one-day spring retreat for the purposes of looking at larger questions of direction, staff alignment/configuration, and next steps for the church. Please keep your Session in your prayers as they provide leadership and discern direction for the congregation. STAFF PLANNING DAY June 6 On Tuesday, June 6, the entire church staff will gather for the annual Staff Planning Day. We will be looking at the next 18 months of worship, programs, and mission opportunities; and the initial calendar gets assembled always in pencil, because changes are sure to come! If your Ministry Group or committee has ideas or plans for events for , be sure to get those to one of the staff, so that your ideas can be included in the planning. If you have any questions, feel free to speak with Pastor Scott or any member of the staff. INTER-GENERATIONAL GROUP HEARS SEAN MITCHELL The 1846 Covenant Society hosted an inter-generational gathering at the residence of Barbara and Mike Gibby on March 24, for an open discussion of stewardship s connection to the success of contemporary churches, and the role of legacy organizations in that success. Sean Mitchell, full time staff director of stewardship at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, led the discussion. Lewinsville s new history video, Pilgrims and Pioneers Always, set the stage for the discussion with its retrospective on the life and struggles of our church family over the past 170 years. The 1846 Covenant Society was created by the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church Foundation in 2009 to provide a meaningful way for members to participate in the future mission of their church.
