7 M A R C H 9-1 0, S T S U N D A Y O F L E N T Fr. Russ The Season of Lent WWJD I am sure many of us remember the fad with the bracelets people wore that had the initials WWJD, What Would Jesus Do imprinted on them. I believe these were manufactured for our youth in an attempt to encourage youth to seriously think about their decisions and choices they make with Jesus Christ in mind. Come to think of it, this is a good slogan for grownups to adopt as well. Throughout my lifetime, there have been books and materials written to offer one so-called Christian guidance for life and life s trials. Books such as, IN HIS STEPS, written by a Topeka Kansas clergyman and MY IMITATION OF CHRIST, written by Thomas a Kempis, attempted to show how people living today can walk in the way that Christ has trod. It brought the example of Jesus right down to the day to day person living in this world. These works attempted to give Christians an all important question: What would Jesus Christ do under each condition which confronts the person of today? God sent us his Son so that we could have an example to follow and live by. One of the principal reasons for the Season of Lent is the chance to practice in a more focused manner WWJD. And so for 40 long days during the Season of Lent we can ask ourselves: Why do we fast? Why do we pray? Why do we give alms? We do it because Christ did it. Our gospel for this 1 st Sunday of Lent tells us that the Spirit led Jesus out into the desert. The same Spirit that led Christ out into the desert calls us out of ourselves to reflect and act on What Would Jesus Do,? If we allow that Spirit to be part of all our principles and affairs the image of Christ is reflected throughout our very lives and we become His very presence in the world. The Season of Lent offers us the opportunity to prayerfully reflect and then act upon what Jesus did for us. Lenten Discussions The Passion and the Cross by: Fr.
