2 page 2 Welcome to Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Our parishioners, the parish staff and I, as rector, hope that your visit to our church will be a prayerful time while at the Mayo Clinic or while you are visiting our city for any other reason. We encourage you to consider Co-Cathedral of the St. John the Evangelist as your church away from home. If we may serve you with any of your needs please do not hesitate to contact us at the Parish Center. Also, please know that the Mayo Clinic offers a chaplaincy service while you are in the hospital and it is possible for communion to be brought to you every day by you talking to the hospital staff and placing a card outside of your door. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is available by request. The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Community is committed to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ as we partner with the city and our neighbor, the Mayo Clinic. If you have recently moved to our city and desire to join the parish community, please find a form on our web page or stop by the Parish Center and register as a member. Together we pray that the Holy Spirit will lead us in being a welcoming Catholic community. Fr. Jerry Mahon Rector Welcome to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist A WITNESS OF BELONGING Little Things with Great Love Anne Frank once said How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment, we can start now, start slowly changing the world! How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make their contribution toward introducing justice straightaway... And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness! Today s Gospel speaks of mighty deeds, and yet in the same breath, talks of just giving a cup of water in Christ s name. Surely when we think of justice, we think of taking care of those in great need worldwide. St. John s has led this community in regard to its giving nature all over the world. I m here to tell you that it s alive and well in our school as well. I d like to share how the youth of St. John s School is partnering with members of the community to contribute meaningfully towards social justice--just since the beginning of the school year! Just some background: We are introducing a new project called Genius Hour at St. John this school year. The search-engine giant, Google, allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time to work on any project that they want. The idea is very simple. Allow people to work on something that interests them and productivity will go up. We are following a similar model. We give the students 84 minutes a week to pursue a topic they are passionate about. They will be presenting their learning once each quarter. Guess what 25% of the 6th graders chose? They chose service to others. They are choosing projects in service to their community, like Birthright and the Dorothy Day House, local animal shelters and Catholic Charities. The first thought in the minds of these kids--when given 84 minutes extra each week--was to choose to help others. The kids have been unbelievably driven in finding ways to raise money, awareness, and supplies (like diapers or dog bones!) to these local charities and businesses. What s genius about this? First of all, in a world which labels this generation as addicts to screen, as self-serving and spoiled, and as ignorant of the world around them, these pre-teen kids have volunteered to give when they don t even have an income. They need to research the issue, interview some members of the community, figure out a way that a pre-teen can tackle the problem, come up with a game plan, ask for permission from the teacher and a few administrators, execute the game plan and fix any challenges that arise, and then present the project. Come the end of October, they need to present all of this to the school. You and I might just open our wallet. But this is service as well, and this 6th grade homeroom teacher loves these little geniuses. If you have questions, you can contact any staff member at St. John s School, including myself. May the peace of Christ be with all of our St. John s family, and thank you for your prayers and support of our school! 3 11 4th Avenue SW Rochester, MN CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST INTERNATIONAL ORGANIST LETIZIA ROMITI AT ST. JOHN S Organist LETIZIA ROMITI will play a concert at the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 2:30 pm. Romiti is Professor of Organ at the Conservatory of Alessandria, Italy. Her recital will include works by Bach, Alain, Boe ly. Brahms and Bonnet. Listen to exquisite music in magnificent surroundings! Freewill offering accepted at the concert. MASS OF ANOINTING FOR THE ELDERLY AND SICK Friday, October 12th at 10:00am the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will have the Mass of Anointing for the elderly and the sick followed by fellowship and treats. Handicapped parking is available in the north parking lot. Parking is available on 4th Ave. and south of the church on 1st St SW (school parking lot). SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Our Gospel passage and the Second Reading from the letter of St. James urge us to examine our lives for anything that is keeping us from loving God above all else. Jesus says, If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. St. James warns, Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become motheaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you. The urgency of our need to detach from all that is not God is clear. When we hold onto possessions too tightly, they come to possess us. The stuff can easily become the focus of our energy and attention. Attachment to material things slowly and steadily corrupts. The spiritual discipline of tithing or stewardship of treasure can help us with this. Tithing leads us to let go of unhealthy attachment to material things and leads us to attach instead to God, relying on Him as our true source of security and happiness. We come to understand that all that we have is a gift from our loving Father and we use it to bless others and glorify Him. Amazingly, we actually enjoy material gifts, and all other gifts, more as a result because we realize where they really came from and are using them as God intended. What wonderful freedom there is in living this way! Catholicsteward.com Contact Debbie at the Parish Center or dthompson@sj.org to increase your annual pledge, to sign up for automatic withdrawal or to offer a special designated gift bless others and glorify Him.
