Refugee Ministry Update The Komi family is here, met Tuesday evening at Logan by a group of parishioners carrying flowers and balloons. They were tired travelers, their trip taking more than twenty-four hours. But there was joy too, smiling faces, hugs, and tears, as Mujahid Komi reunited with his sister, who lives in Dorchester. Paul, 13 years old, wore a USA cap and Mansy, 5 years old, waved an American flag. Next Steps The family will need quiet and privacy as they adjust to their new surroundings. They will stay in the home of some parishioners in Newton and move into their Roxbury apartment September 1st. In the coming days and weeks the Komi family will apply for a social security card, enroll in English language classes, enroll their children in school, and begin work with Jewish Vocational Services on job readiness. Members of our parishes will introduce them to the T, orient them to supermarkets and other stores, and help with many adjustments. Fundraising Federal funds are given to the family for a limited time, but this funding is not sufficient to cover their rent and other expenses until both parents have jobs, usually within six months of arriving here. So our Collaborative is raising a fund to support them. We are nearing our fund raising goal of $16,000 and have raised $15,100. Help us achieve our goal. There is more information at the displays at the back of church. Contribute To donate by credit card, you can go to sholnewton.org/refugees and select the donate button. Or to pay by check you can make a check out to either Sacred Heart or Our Lady s Parish, write Refugee Ministry in the memo line, and either drop it in the collection basket or mail it to Our Lady s, 573 Washington St., Newton MA Many thanks for your donations. Mother Caroline Academy School Supply Drive It s almost back to school time! Each fall, our parishioners have been very generous in donating school supplies for the eighty-eight students and ten teachers
5 Collaborative News From Fr. Dan, Parochial Vicar Assisting the Pastor with Administration Dear Friends, I am so happy being here! Your kindness warms my heart. Pope Francis wants parishes to adopt a refugee family. See the next item A refugee family from war torn Sudan was welcomed Tuesday by our two parishes. I am so proud of the efforts of the Justice and Peace Committee to welcome our new friends, the Komi family. I can imagine the smiles on their faces and Jesus face. Let's all rally around this initiative and help support them in any way. Financial help is key (see website for details) as are prayers. Turbulent times in the news recently. How can one process the emotions of this and other things that challenge us? Great book on Stress. I recently finished a book I loved so much I read it a second time! It is very interesting, not too long, and done by an esteemed Stanford Professor. It is: The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It, by Kelly McGonigal, Rated 4.5 on 5 star scale that is very high. The Amazon.com blurb says: Stress isn t bad. In The Upside of Stress, McGonigal highlights new research indicating that stress can, in fact, make us stronger, smarter, and happier if we learn how to embrace it. The Upside of Stress brings together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience the human capacity for stress-related growth and mind-set, the power of beliefs to shape reality. McGonigal combines science, stories, and exercises into an engaging and practical book that is both entertaining and life-changing. She is very compatible with our Christian mindset. There is a TED talk on line on it too. My ministry position: To help our pastor, Fr. John, in the execution of his leadership. Sports Section: As I write this ( ): (1) The Sox are on the verge of beating the Yankees again Oh, how I love to say that! (2) The Patriots look awesome. (3) The Bruins are trying to sign David Pasternak to a long term contract. Love and God bless you, Fr. Dan at MCA in Dorchester. Since it is almost the beginning of another school year, it's time to take advantage of those sales and replenish their supplies!! Items especially needed at this time are xerox paper, art supplies, highlighters, dry erase markers and erasers for the white boards, writing implements, index cards, and loose-leaf notebook paper. Our drive will begin the weekend of August 19/20 and run through the weekend of September 9/10. Baskets will be placed at the entrances and exits of Sacred Heart Church. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation by check to Mother Caroline Academy or online at MCA is a tuition-free private school for low-income middle school girls in grades 4-8. Your generosity and support make a difference every day! Next Week s Second Collection Next week s second collection supports The Catholic University of America (CUA) and its scholarship fund for needy students. CUA in Washington, D.C. is the national university of the Catholic Church. Many priests and 5 professional lay ministers throughout the US obtain their education from CUA. For more information, please visit Save the Dates: Upcoming Protecting God s Children Safe Environment Training The Protecting God s Children Safe Environment Program will be offered at the following times, both held in the Lower Church Hall at Our Lady s: Thursday, September 14, 2:45-4:45pm Wednesday, October 4, 7:00-9:00pm Anyone volunteering in the Collaborative in any capacity is required to attend this training once; not attending will affect your ability to volunteer. Nothing brings joy to the heart quite like singing, especially when singing and sharing the goodness of our faith week after week. We warmly invite you to join your voice with other parishioners who enjoy singing in the Adult Choir. Our first rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 7, 7:30-9:00pm in the church. Rehearsals will continue weekly and the choir will commence singing at the 9:00am Mass on September 17. We certainly understand how schedules become full, particularly in the fall, but if you would enjoy joining our small and loving parish group, please let us know how we can accommodate your availability. No prior choral experience is necessary! For more information please contact our parish music director, Erica: ejohnson@sholnewton.org. Bridge Over Troubled Waters Our efforts to support the Bridge program for young homeless moms and their children has been on hold for the past year while the house has been completely renovated. The house will be ready at the end of August, and over the next few months, 8 moms and kids will move in. We hope to provide them with new bed linens in their favorite colors to brighten up their new home. Your financial support for this outreach would be much appreciated. Checks should be made out to Sacred Heart, with "Bridge Project" on the memo line, and dropped in the offertory baskets or returned to the rectory. Please contact Cathy Schneider at cschneider52@comcast.net if you have any questions. Religious Education News As the summer slowly draws to a close, we are preparing for another year of spreading the Good News to our families. Have you registered for CCD yet? Please visit the Sacred Heart Parish website to download registration forms and return them soon! Are you looking for a way to
7 Sacred Heart News respond to God s great love for you by serving His people? Teaching CCD could be the way! We are looking for new teachers for both our Tuesday afternoon (Gr. 1-5) and evening (Gr. 6-10) programs. You learn more about Jesus as you prepare each lesson for our students! It is a win for you and for our children! Call or to inquire. We provide training and support! Please continue to pray for our Confirmation students as they complete the process of preparation before receiving Confirmation on October 15th! ~ Michelle Solomon Dir. of RE Welcome Back Sunday We are celebrating the beginning of a new school year on Sunday, September 17th with a number of activities. The choir returns to the 9:00am Mass. The Coffee Hour will celebrate Peg Miller who retired this summer from her position as Sacred Heart's Administrative Assistant. The 9:00am Mass will have a piece particularly geared toward children, and the Guild is inviting women of all ages for tea in the Rectory. More details to follow in next week's bulletin. Prison Visitation Opportunity One day each month, a small group of men and women from the Newton Wellesley area visits inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens. Most of those visited are far from home so receive few if any visits in the course of a year. If you might be interested in joining us, please contact Sacred Heart parishioner Jim Reilly for further information. Jim can be reached at Want to Receive the Collaborative Bulletin by Each Week? If so, visit: Scroll down to either Our Lady s or Sacred Heart (listed alphabetically) and select the sign up button. Food Cards Quite often we have needy persons coming to the door to ask for help. We generally give them a grocery store gift card. St. Vincent de Paul and the Guild have been providing these cards, but at this time we have none left. If you would like to help, you may drop off grocery store gift cards to the rectory during normal office hours. Thank you! Help Needed The care of our linens is a ministry that is essential to the celebration of the Eucharist which is the heart of our faith. We are looking for a small group of people who would be willing to undertake this weekly ministry. A brief training is all you need. If you think you can help out, kindly call Marie Buckley at SAVE THE DATE! If you attended last year and enjoyed the day, please spread the word about our picnic to your neighbors and friends. We will supply hamburgers, hot dogs & ice cream; you supply soft drinks and any other foods your family will enjoy. If you would like to share a finger food dessert or salad with other people, bring it along; we will have tables set up for your items. Bring your blanket and chairs and enjoy an afternoon of fun; there will be games, races, pony rides and more. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help defray the expenses of the picnic, please make your check payable to Our Lady s with picnic written on the memo line. Donations can dropped in the collection baskets or mailed to the parish office. Note: Grill closes at 2:30pm. 7

Or would you simply like to explore these possibilities? Please call the Parish office for more information. Lord, When did we See You Ill and Visit You... The early Christian community began the practice of bringing Communion to those who were unable to gather with the community. Today this practice is still an important ministry in the Church. Our Ministers of Care visit and bring Communion to parishioners who, because of illness, age or other issues, are not able to come to church. There is a need for more ministers of care here at Our Lady s. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, we invite you to a meeting of the ministers of care on Tuesday, September 12 th at 7:00pm in the McPherson Room in the lower church. You are also welcome to attend the workshop on visiting the sick and homebound, September 16 th and 23 rd in the lower church (for details, visit our website). If you would like further information or if you know of someone who is homebound and would like to receive Communion, please contact Cathy Belli Duffy (cathybelliduffy@comcast.net or ) or leave a message at the Parish Office. 8
