2 Dear Friends, This quote inspires compassion: If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility. We have great music at both parishes! Christmas time is a great time to invite a friend to Mass. Folks want to come at this time more than most others. Even gently mentioning the Mass times, or complimenting the music or homilies at our churches, and or saying how you enjoy Advent and/or Christmas Mass could be how Jesus brings someone home. Pope Francis: Advent is a time of consolation and hope. We are born for great things. We are born to be with the Lord. Life is best spent waiting in expectation, in the desire for the Lord who always brings newness. This does not mean waiting around doing nothing, but being active in love. Christians are called to keep and spread the joy of anticipation: we await God, Who loves us infinitely, and Who, at the same time, waits for us to be with Him forever in Heaven. I hope you will live out Advent in this way, as a time of consoling December 15 Retreat: The Manger through Mary s Eyes Are you wishing for a silent night this Christmas season? Take an afternoon off to come rediscover Mary meet her, learn to trust her, and let her lead you to the manger! Lunch will be provided. Open to all Collaborative Parishioners. Next Saturday, December 15, 12:00 4:00pm, at the MacKenzie Center at Sacred Heart. Questions? Call the Sacred Heart Parish Office at Monthly Mass for the Sick The next Monthly Mass for the Sick, sponsored by the Mass for the Sick ministry of Sacred Heart & Our Lady Help of Christians Collaborative, will be on Monday, December 17, at 6:30pm at Our Lady s Church. Our pastor Fr. John Sassani will celebrate the Mass and Anointing of the Sick. Our Lady s Music Director, Anne Marie David, will offer selections from her new CD, Grief and Gratitude during the anointing, after which we ll enjoy holiday refreshments of cookies and punch. From 7:30-8:00pm, a carol-sing will take place with members of From Fr. Dan, Administrator 2 newness and joyful expectation. This world often seems full of fear but Advent responds to this with the Gospel of Fearlessness, the opposite of fear. Two words from the Gospel of the First Sunday of Advent sum up this message: Look up, and raise up your heads. If fear is holding us down Jesus invites you to turn your gaze to heaven, from whence He will come. Looking out on the sea, you can think about the meaning of life: embraced by God, infinite beauty. Get up on your feet, let us turn our gaze to heaven, then we will feel the need to open our hands to our neighbor and the consolation that we know how to give, will heal our fears. Sports: Did the Pats beat the Vikings? I bet it was close, but we won. I feel more confident about beating Miami today. The Celts, including Gordon Hayward, are coming to life. How long until Chara and Bergeron are back to health for the Bruins? Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma made the college football playoffs. I feel bad for Georgia, who almost beat Alabama. What bowl will BC play in? Love & God Bless You, Fr. Dan New & Ongoing in Our Community our music ministry, as well as our middle-school students. This evening is designed to bring joy, hope, and peace to those who are affected by illness, including family and friends. The Mass and program will both be held downstairs at Our Lady s Church. Contact Kristina Preman at kpreman@ sholnewton.org or Michelle Solomon at msolomon@ sholnewton.org The Sound of Your Greeting A Reflection by Erica Johnson For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. [Luke 1:44] This Advent, we invite you to experience the joyful hospitality of Mary. She greeted Elizabeth, Zechariah, John, Joseph, the Angel Gabriel and the Baby Jesus. She received the Word of God and responded (in haste!). Mary is our model of how to engage in relationships and how to open ourselves to receiving God through the birth of Jesus. For each week of Advent, we offer you reflections on the Sunday readings and questions for continuing your prayer through the week. What will the sound of your greeting be on December 25th this year? Don t miss the first hints of joy this week: the scripture readings have beautiful buds of new life brimming in nearly every sentence. The overall message is It s coming the joyous event is coming get ready! We are asked to transform ourselves, our thoughts, our actions, our whole being into joyful recipients of the tremendous, impending gift. Like the blind man, Bartimaeus, who throws off his cloak and springs up to welcome Jesus, we too must rid ourselves of the robe of mourning and misery, wrap ourselves in the glory of God and spring into action. What robes of misery do you need to shed to prepare yourself to welcome Jesus? God helps each of us to transform those parts of our lives that weigh us down and that can prevent us from experiencing the joy of a life centered in Christ. John the Baptist receives the Word of God, the call to action, in the desert. What is your desert space? How does God speak to you, and are you able to prepare the way for Christ to greet you? How did Mary transform her life, her whole being, to welcome the Christ child? She shows us the gentle path of preparing ourselves for Christ. Ask Our Lady to encourage and strengthen you upon this journey. 3

4 Msgr. Dennis Sheehan Homily Given on December 10, 2006 Second Sunday of Advent - Liturgical Year C Advent gives out a decidedly mixed message. Mixed? you ask. Yes. First, it s a season of joyful waiting. As we say, We wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wait in joyful hope. That sounds just fine. I can deal with that. But then comes John the Baptist. The Gospel tells us he s preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Repentance? Sin? How does that sit down with waiting in joyful hope? Advent is a very mixed message..or is it? Let s look more closely. First - waiting. Waiting for me is not a very easy thing. It seems a waste of time. While I wait, my appointments slide into chaos. While I wait, my food gets cold. Yet Paul tells the Philippians that their waiting for the day of Christ is an experience filled with joy and hope. Joyful waiting is a hard sell where I m concerned. It s an oxymoron, a contradiction. Well, honestly, it depends on what I m waiting for. Waiting for a late train and waiting for someone I love are very different kinds of waiting. Advent waiting has about it an element of certainty. We know Christ is coming. We even know that Christmas will surely come. We need to pay attention to that confidence that fills Paul s message in today s letter to the Philippians. Hear him again: I am confident of this, that the one who began the good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. There s Advent waiting. First of all, we are God s work. We need to pay attention to that during Advent. God worked in all the Advent characters: Zechariah, his wife Elizabeth, their son John the Baptist - and of course God worked in Mary. But God also started a good work in us. God worked in our families, in our teachers, in our parishes, in our friends. God works as well in our failures and disappointments, though that s harder to see. But it makes Paul s waiting quite joyful - to know that God began me as a good work. Then, too, God is not finished. God is not finished with me. God is not finished with the church. God, who began my good work, will bring me and the church to a realization of joy beyond our imagining. Waiting is joyful hope. Advent invites us to that experience. But how then to deal with John the Baptist? He has all that stuff about sin and repentance. Not very joyful at all. But John is part of the message of hope. He is saying change. Sure, it involves confronting past sins. Sure, it involves moving and changing. But remember we re all works in progress. John is showing you and me how God bring his work to fulfillment. Some people are frightened by the prospect. But listen to Kathleen Norris in her book The Cloister Walk. Maybe you ve read it. She writes, Repentance is not a popular word these days, but I believe that any of us recognize it when it strikes us in the gut. Repentance is coming to our senses, seeing suddenly what we ve done that we might not have done or recognizing that the problem is not in what we do but in what we become. Often enough, what we need to change is our value system. A great preacher once noted: The world as we live in it is like a shop window into which some mischievous person has got overnight and shifted all the price labels - so that the cheap things have the high price labels on them and the really precious things are priced low. We let ourselves be taken in. Repentance means getting those price labels back in the right place. I read recently a story about a closet slob. He couldn t comprehend being neat or clean. Why make a bed? You re only going back. Why put the cap back on the toothpaste? You catch the drift. His wife convinced him to enroll in a 12-step program for slobs. A therapist taught him how to put the toilet paper on the roll. He was a new man! Then his wife went away for a week. You know what happened back to the old ways he went. But no something had happened. He could not live with the sink full overnight or the towels laying on the bathroom floor. What had happened? He d simply been exposed to a higher standard of living. That s Advent week two - waiting joyfully with confidence that God will complete us. Realizing that God s work may call for change, for a new way of seeing, for a new set of values, for a changed set of behaviors. For me or you, it may not be the dirty dishes or the toilet paper roll. What is it then? Happy waiting in joyful hope. God, after all, is not finished with me. That s really good news as we celebrate the Eucharist this morning. 4

5 The Church s Best-Kept Secret: Catholic Social Ministry Gathering Saturday, February 2-Tuesday, February 5, 2019 Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, DC What is it? The Catholic Social Ministry Gathering (CSMG) is an opportunity to Connect, Learn, Pray, and Advocate with other Catholics from around the country who want to put into action the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church. As we connect with others from Massachusetts and elsewhere, we learn about current social justice issues from excellent speakers, panelists, and video presentations. In 2018, topics included immigration, the environment, aid to people in need both at home and abroad. After learning about current needs and issues, experts brief the gathering on the Federal budget that the Congress will soon be enacting. Particular attention is given to key line items that the Church believes should be funded in order to relieve the suffering of the poor. After this briefing, members of the gathering go to Capitol Hill to meet with their representatives and Senators, or their aides, to share information about the Church s position on specific budget proposals that help the poor and impact the environment. You can find out much more about CSMG by going to the Catholic Bishops website, usccb.org and searching for Catholic Social Ministry Gathering. You can also call Deacon Bill Koffel at Why go? Deacon Bill, who has attended the gatherings for the past two years with his wife Dorothy, together Beyond Our Walls with others friends from our parish and around MA, is going again in I [Deacon Bill] have been deeply moved and heartened to be in the presence of so many other people who are motivated by the desire to put the teachings of Jesus and the Church into action. At a time when so much seems to be going wrong in our world, this was an opportunity to do something positive. Witness to Life Interested in joining the Archdiocese of Boston s pilgrimage for the 2019 Witness to Life in Washington, D.C., this January? This year, there will be two tracks for the pilgrimage - an overnight option and a two-night option. 7 Giving Tree: Return This Weekend Giving Tree gifts need to be returned this weekend, December 8-9, so that gifts can be distributed in a timely manner before Christmas. In this season of Advent, let us remember the less fortunate among us: the homeless, the disadvantaged, refugees, persons struggling and ignored by society, both here and abroad. The Child Jesus, whose birth we are preparing to celebrate, came to save all peoples of all generations; the kindness we show to "the least" among us is kindness we show to Him. Thank you for your generosity and caring! We Need Your Help at Mass Would you like to become more involved in the Our Lady s community? Consider serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, or Greeter at Mass. We are in need of volunteers at all Masses.
