Mother Caroline Academy Supply Drive It s almost back to school time! Each fall, our parishioners have been very generous in donating school supplies for the 88 students and 10 teachers at MCA in Dorchester. Since it is almost the beginning of another school year, it's time to take advantage of those sales and replenish their supplies!! Items especially needed at this time are xerox paper, art supplies, highlighters, dry erase markers and erasers for the white boards, writing implements, index cards, and loose-leaf notebook paper. Our drive will run through the weekend of September 9/10. Baskets will be placed at the entrances and exits of the churches If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation by check to Mother Caroline Academy or at MCA is a tuition-free private school for low-income middle school girls in grades 4-8. Your generosity and support make a difference every day! This Week s Second Collection This week s second collection supports The Catholic University of America (CUA) and its scholarship fund for needy students. CUA in Washington, D.C. is the national university of the Catholic Church. Many priests and professional lay ministers obtain their education from CUA. For more information, please visit Permanent Diaconate Inquirers Program God calls each of us to serve one another in charity and love. There are many vocations both in the life of the Church and in the wider world. For some, there is a particular invitation to serve Christ and the Church in the religious life or in ordained ministry. The Permanent Diaconate, restored by Vatican II, is a ministry of service that is open to married and single men. St. John Paul II described the ministry of the deacon as the Church s service sacramentalized. Deacons are ordained to the Ministry of Service in three areas: Word, Sacrament, and Charity. As servants of the Word, deacons proclaim the Gospel and Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Collaborative News Daily Mass Schedule The regular daily Mass schedule returns this Tuesday, Sept 5: Mon-Fri at 7am at Our Lady s Mon-Sat at 9am at Sacred Heart 4 evangelize by word and deed, as did the great deacons St. Stephen and St. Francis. As servants of the sacramental life of the Church, deacons preside at baptisms, assist at Eucharist, witness marriages, and bury the dead, among other things. As servants of charity, like the great St. Lawrence, deacons report the needs of the community to the Church and bring its support and assistance to those in need. If you are discerning God s possible call to serve the Church as a Permanent Deacon, you and your wife are invited to take part in an upcoming Inquirer Program. The Program consists of three sessions. Session I, Who is the Deacon and am I one who is called? will take place at various locations throughout the Archdiocese from September 18 through September 26. The session closest to Our Lady s and Sacred Heart will happen at Good Shepherd Parish, 99 Wayland Street, Wayland, on Tuesday, September 20, from 7:00 to 8:30pm. Later sessions will be held in November. For more information contact Deacon Bill Koffel at bill@koffel.org or Deacon Christopher Connelly, Director of the Diaconate Formation Program, at deacon_vocations@rcab.org or by phone at The next group to be admitted into formation will begin classes in September Refugee Ministry Update The Komi family has moved into their apartment in Roxbury after a packed and joyful eleven days. Here s a short list of special moments of grace: The robust applause at Our Lady s last Sunday when the family was introduced Pickup soccer with local families in Albemarle Park Their preparing a delicious Sudanese pork stew with a special mix of spices A USA-style barbeque here in Newton with Mujahid s sister and her family Paul so eager to improve his English, studying with a workbook every evening Walking with Paul and Mansy along the Charles River nature is such a healer And the many joyful moments all you helpers are having with them Fond Farewell Each of our journeys in faith is unique and quite unpredictable, isn t it? For many months now, I have been deeply listening to the voice of God calling me elsewhere in my personal life - and there I must follow. In a few short months I will be leaving Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Parishes. It s hard to say goodbye. As I have told my coworkers and I want to tell all of you, my time here in the Newton Collaborative has been sheer joy - delightful and life-giving in every way. Indeed you have brought out the best in me. We have truly holy priests, a talented and dedicated staff, and faith-filled and generous parishioners. God is blessing us abundantly! I am so proud of the good work we are doing here for the glory of God and in service to our neighbors. Thank you! Surely it will continue long after I am gone because of you! A search committee will be formed for my replacement. Know that you are dear to me. With love and prayers for each and all, Marie Buckley

5 Collaborative News From Fr. Dan, Parochial Vicar Assisting the Pastor with Administration Dear Friends, Among many, two things I loved last weekend: (1) The welcoming of the Komi family from Sudan and (2) the coziness of the noon Mass in the lower Church. Friendships at risk during this time of political polarization is a topic I hear mentioned often. The following book has been a huge help for me -- the very short summary book on How to Make Friends and Influence People. From it I have learned the following: (1) Sometimes it is better to not talk politics with some folks. (2) Emphasize what we agree on. Often it is 90%. (3) Never say: You are wrong. Instead say: We see things differently. (4) When moving from what we agree with, to spelling out what we differ on, avoid using BUT and instead use AND. (5) HOW we say things is often more important than WHAT we say. (6) You catch more flies with honey. When we listen well and speak gently, we are way more likely to be persuasive and preserve relationships, than when we try to force our views on others. Pope Francis and finding hope: The ultimate destination of our Christian pilgrimage will be the heavenly Jerusalem. And on this pilgrimage we encounter the God of surprises who treats us with infinite tenderness, like a father welcoming his children home after a long and difficult journey. Even if many experience life as a prolonged period of suffering think of the fearful faces of those haunted by violence and war still there is a Father who weeps with infinite compassion for his children, and who waits to console them with a very different future. We believe that neither death nor hatred have the last word, for we Christians see, with great hope, a larger horizon: the Kingdom of God, where all evil is banished forever. It is Jesus himself who is the light of this new future, and who even now accompanies us on our way. Texas Floods: Our prayers and assistance go out to all those stricken by the huge rainfall. Happy Labor Day! May all be able to find work jobs that provide a just wage, good working conditions and a chance to make the world a better place. Back to school time. May it go well and be a great year. My ministry position: To help our pastor, Fr. John, in the execution of his leadership. Sports Section uncommon sadness: As I write this ( ): (1) The Sox have been creamed three times in a row, and my computer tells me they are a run down in the bottom of the 7 th, but they have two men on. Please, please tell me they won! (2) The Patriots lost awesome receiver Julian Edelman to a season ending knee injury. But hey, I d still rather be the Pats than any other team. (3) There is talk about voiding the Celtics mega-trade. What happened there? (4) How will BC football do this year? Love and God bless you, Fr. Dan We are gradually learning more about the horrible conditions they have endured as refugees. They will continue to need our prayers and support. The Komi family came to us as strangers; they are our holy family. Your outpouring of generosity is a blessing to them; may it be so for you, too. Enjoy an opportunity to meet the Komi family at our collaborative picnic on September 24th. Next Justice & Peace Committee Meeting Our First Justice and Peace Committee Meeting of the new year will be on Sunday, September 17th, at 11:15am in the McPherson Room at Our Lady's Church (on the lower level of the church building). We will be discussing the latest on our Refugee Ministry and looking ahead to this year's Social Justice Forums. Hope to see you there! Special Collection for the Victims of Hurricane Harvey The damage and destruction from Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath have been on a level not seen in the U.S. in a long time, if ever. It will be months, even years, for some areas to recover. A special collection will be taken after all the Masses this weekend. Please make out a check to either Sacred Heart or Our Lady s and mark it as for the this collection. Workshop on Visiting the Sick On Saturdays, September 16 and 23, a workshop on 5 Pastoral Care to the Sick and the Homebound will be offered at Our Lady s from 9:00am-3:00pm. Timothy Duff, a certified chaplain, will teach the course. Eucharistic Ministers, pastoral visitors, parish nurses and others are encouraged to attend. Fee; $40. For registration information call Preregistration is required. Please register by Sept. 11. SAVE THE DATE! Our annual Sacred Heart and Our Lady s Collaborative Picnic this year will be on Sunday, September 24th from 12:00 noon to 3:00pm on the front lawn of Our Lady s Church. All are welcome!! We will supply hamburgers, hot dogs & ice cream; you supply soft drinks and any other foods your family will enjoy. If you would like to share a finger food, dessert, or salad with other people, bring it along; we will have tables set up for your items. Bring your blanket and chairs and enjoy an afternoon of fun; there will be games, races, pony rides and more. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help defray the expenses of the picnic, please make your check payable to Our Lady s with picnic written on the memo line. Donations can dropped in the collection baskets or mailed to the parish office. Note: Grill closes at 2:30pm.

Nothing brings joy to the heart quite like singing, especially when singing and sharing the goodness of our faith week after week. We warmly invite you to join your voice with other parishioners who enjoy singing in the Adult Choir. Our first rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 7, 7:30-9:00pm in the church. Rehearsals will continue weekly and the choir will commence singing at the 9:00am Mass on September 17. We certainly understand how schedules become full, particularly in the fall, but if you would enjoy joining our small and loving parish group, please let us know how we can accommodate your availability. No prior choral experience is necessary! For more information please contact our parish music director, Erica: ejohnson@sholnewton.org. Bridge Over Troubled Waters Our efforts to support the Bridge program for young homeless moms and their children has been on hold for the past year while the house has been completely renovated. The house will be ready shortly, and over the next few months, 8 moms and kids will move in. We hope to provide them with new bed linens in their favorite colors to brighten up their new home. Your financial support for this outreach would be much appreciated. Checks should be made out to Sacred Heart, with "Bridge Project" on the memo line, and dropped in the offertory baskets or returned to the rectory. Please contact Cathy Schneider at cschneider52@comcast.net if you have any questions. Religious Education News As the summer slowly draws to a close, Have you registered for CCD yet? Classes begin on Sept 26th. Please see the Sacred Heart Parish website and download the registration form and return them to the rectory as soon as you can. If you are a new family at Sacred Heart, please send a copy of your child s baptismal certificate along with the fee and

7 Sacred Heart News return your forms soon! The new CCD calendar is also provided on the website. We are looking for new teachers for both our Tuesday afternoon (Gr. 1-5) and evening (Gr. 6-10) programs. We have brand new text books that provide the lessons and you provide the gift of your faith! You learn more about Jesus as you prepare each lesson for our students! It is a win for you and for our children! We provide training and support! Please continue to pray for our Confirmation students as they complete the process of preparation before receiving Confirmation on October 15th! I look forward to hearing from you by phone or msolomon@sholnewton.org. ~ Michelle Solomon, Dir. of RE Welcome Back Sunday Mark your calendars for Sept 17th! There will be a number of activities to welcome new members to the Sacred Heart community and to welcome back those who have been away for the summer. Please plan to join fellow parishioners as we begin a new year of programs and social events. Once a month beginning on the 17th, all children at the 9:00am Mass will be invited to come forward to the floor area in front of the first pews for the Gospel Reading and Homily (parents also welcome). The priest will then preach a homily geared toward the children. These special homilies will coincide with the monthly Young Family Gatherings that were started last year at Coffee Hour. The choir returns to the 9:00am Mass. All those interested in lending their voices to the Adult Choir or Children's Choir are encouraged to contact Erica Johnson (ejohnson@sholnewton.org). Coffee Hour in the MacKenzie Center following the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses resumes on the 17th. Catch up with old friends and meet new families and visitors. At this first coffee hour, from 10:00 to 11:00, we will be thanking Peg Miller, who retired at the end of June, for her many years of service in the offices of both Sacred Heart and St. Philip Neri. The Guild of St. Francis hosts a 125th Anniversary Tea from 3:00 to 4:30 in the rectory for ladies of all ages. Come singly or bring your daughter/granddaughter/mother/ grandmother. Enjoy lemonade, tea, sherry, little sandwiches, and sweets. In the spirit of the 125th, hats and gloves are welcome. Bring your own or borrow from our "dress up" box! Prison Visitation Opportunity One day each month, a small group of men and women from the Newton Wellesley area visits inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens. Most of those visited are far from home so receive few if any visits in the course of a year. If you might be interested in joining us, please contact Sacred Heart parishioner Jim Reilly for further information. Jim can be reached at Saint Francis House For the month of September we need pasta and sauce. You may bring in your donations at any time during the month and place them in the marked bins at the entrances to the church. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Want to Receive the Collaborative Bulletin by Each Week? If so, visit: Scroll down to either Our Lady s or Sacred Heart (listed alphabetically) and select the sign up button. Food Cards Quite often we have needy persons coming to the door to ask for help. We generally give them a grocery store gift card. St. Vincent de Paul and the Guild have been providing these cards, but at this time we have none left. If you would like to help, you may drop off gift cards to the rectory during normal office hours. Thank you! Help Needed The care of our linens is a ministry that is essential to the celebration of the Eucharist which is the heart of our faith. We are looking for a small group of people who would be willing to undertake this weekly ministry. A brief training is all you need. If you think you can help out, kindly call Marie Buckley at
