Last month in worship we discovered the heights, depths, and wideness of God s love as we live out that love in relationships with God, neighbors, and even our enemies. Typically our lives are lived at such a fast, breakneck pace that our attention, if we are to summon it, is brief and set in a crisis mode. At this pace our relationships suffer and we just tend to get by until we find the time that seemingly never comes. There is something beautiful about summer. Summer is a time to slow down, get out of the sun and in the shade and spend quality time with the folks we love. Love is at the heart of the Life, Ministry and Teaching of Jesus. In Mark s gospel, Jesus gave the Great Commandment The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:29-31) In Matthew s gospel the summary of the impact of this commandment says this: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:40). Everything depends on our relationships! It is summer! Time to focus upon what are the most important things in life our relationships! Are you too busy to slow down? Are you too busy to spend quality time with those God commands us to love? How can you slow down and focus upon loving those around you? How might you better love God (with all that you are)? Love your neighbor as yourself (including family, friends and even strangers)? And even love your enemies? In the end, these are all that matter in LIFE! Jesus tells us not only to love God and our neighbors as we love ourselves, but He tells us also to love our enemies as well. Jesus also tells us to love life LIFE in His Kingdom. How might you love your life in the Kingdom of God right here and right now? How might you love God, neighbor, self, and your enemies with your life? It is the summer of love. Summer is a time to slow down and spend quality time with the folks we love. Are we too busy to slow down? Are we too busy to spend quality time with those whom we love? Perhaps it is high time that we did just that slow down and focus on our relationships with God, family and friends. Finding quantity of and quality of time with God & with family and friends is essential to loving LIFE. Jesus was asked: Which commandment is the first of all? Pay attention to how He answered the question, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength Everything that you are. How can you love with all your Heart Your Relational Life? How can you love with all your Soul Your Spiritual Life? How can you love with all your Mind Your Emotional Life? And how can you love with all your Strength Your Physical Life? (continued on page 3)

2 Coffee With the Pastor Sunday, July 13, :45 a.m. Bible Beach Classroom (2nd floor of the Family Life Center) If you are new at our church or want to learn more about Benton United Methodist Church, make plans to join our Sr. Pastor on Sunday, July 13 at 9:45 a.m. during the Sunday school hour in the Bible Beach Classroom on the second floor of the Family Life Center. During this time you will have an opportunity to get to know more about the United Methodist Church and meet other folks. We will also take time to explain church membership. Reserve your spot by: Calling the church office at or Carolyn at A Word From Your Nurture Team A little over a year ago we began the Shepherd Ministry here at Benton UMC, in an effort to draw us closer as a church family and to better meet the needs of all those in the family. There are currently 19 shepherds, tending 196 families who are either active members or regular attenders. Each member of the flock determines the best means of communication with their shepherd ( , phone, text, card) so they can make a connection on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, or whatever is best for them). Forming a solid relationship of trust and confidence between the flock and its shepherd is a major goal of the Shepherd Ministry. The shepherds notify the office of any change in the status of their sheep; and likewise, the office and Prayer Team keep the shepherds apprised of situations in the lives of their sheep. Communication is the key. If you have lost your shepherd s information or have questions about the Ministry, contact Rev. Cheryl Nelson ( ) or the church office ( ). Because this vital Ministry is in need of more shepherds, the Nurture Team is asking you to think about your own spiritual gifts and graces. If you have a caring, encouraging spirit and a heart for the members of your church family, becoming a shepherd yourself will be a most rewarding experience. You will be given the names of families/ individuals that you will be keeping in contact with; growing a relationship with your flock, nurturing the body of Christ. So pray about it, and when you feel led to join this ministry, give Rev. Cheryl a call. BMS Tiger Tales The TV and print news constantly makes us aware of teens and the terrible things they can do. However, you MUST see what our BMS teens have been doing at school! As many of you are already aware, BUMC students represented almost half of the first group of students selected for Student of the Year at BMS. The group included Megan Cox, Brooks Cram, Drew Haynes, Dylan Plunkett, Brooke Smith, Eli Stinson, Mackenzie Terhune, Kathryn Watts, and Hayden White. What sets these students apart? First, their grades! These students maintained honor roll status ALL year while taking high school courses like Algebra I. Another requirement is participation in school activities and community outreach. Finally, students were selected based on their ability to communicate with peers and adults. These students excelled in every one of these areas! Two students are chosen each year at each grade level as the overall outstanding students in each grade. Hayden White and Megan Cox were chosen to represent eighth grade. So let s look at their other accomplishments Megan Cox attained great success in her band pursuits this year. She was 1 st Chair clarinet in the BMS band as well as in the District VIII Honor Band AND in the NSU Summer High School Band Camp. She was also a member of the All State Middle School Band. She participated in the Purple Jackets, community service projects, and the talented music program at BMS. Megan was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society. The BMS Golf Team took second place in both the District and State Golf Tournaments, and Hayden White was the #1 player in the district and the state. Hayden was a member of the track team and placed 3 rd in the 1600 at the district track meet. Hayden was also a member of the eighth grade basketball team. In addition, Hayden s fund-raising efforts for St. Jude ranked him as one of the top students in community service at BMS. Hayden was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society and a BMS Ambassador. Brooks Cram is a talented student-athlete. He was a football player, basketball player, member of the track team, and a golfer at BMS. He participated in sports year-round and continued to maintain excellent grades. He received the Academic Excellence Award for the football season and was awarded the Coaches Choice Award in basketball for being the Assistant Assistant Coach! Garrett Hable is a leader on the field and off. Garrett was the quarterback for the eighth grade football team. He received the Academic Excellence Award for both football and basketball for his outstanding GPA. He also earned the Offensive MVP Award for his contributions on the basketball team. He was a member of the 4x200 track team which won 3 rd place at the district meet. Garrett was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society. Drew Haynes quietly accomplished so much. Dylan Plunkett is an outstanding student and athlete. His remarkable test scores made him a Principal s Choice award winner. Brooke Smith is a multi-talented young lady. She was selected as a member of the district honor band. She also danced on the BMS TigerLine. She was a Peer PAW mentor and tutor as well as a member of the Purple Jackets. Brooke was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society and participated in numerous community service projects. Eli Stinson rocked the 4-H world winning many awards. Eli placed first in archery at regional shooting sport competition and second in shooting sports at the state meet. He also won first overall in regionals and state in Hunting Skills Discipline. Eli s work with pigs resulted in qualification for nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition, he was selected Defensive Player of the Year for the BMS football team. Eli was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society and a BMS Ambassador. Mackenzie Terhune is an actively involved student. She was a member of the Lady Tigers Girls Basketball team. Mackenzie was also a member of the National Junior Honors Society. In addition to her nomination as a Student of the Year candidate, Kathryn Watts won 1 st place in the year old girls fighting at the World Championships. She was also a Purple Jacket. Our eighth graders were not the only ones to shine! Georgia Carroway was selected Most Improved Player on the seventh grade basketball team. Her team won an undefeated district championship. Georgia was also chosen to be the school mascot, Tilly the Tiger. She is already in training to be a high school champion pole vaulter. 3 From the Pastor...continued from page 1 First of all, you have to create time to spend in relationships. Secondly, quantity of time is just as important as quality. And lastly, the only thing that you entered into life with and that will carry through to the other side is relationships. Love is eternal and therefore will be the only thing that really matters. It is the summer of love. Take the time, make the time for that which matters! Grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Danny Gleason Senior Pastor BMS Tiger Tales...continued from previous page Abbie Rutledge competed at the Louisiana State Archery Competition and placed 4 th out of 563 sixth grade girls in the state of Louisiana which qualified her for the national competition. Her state score was an unbelievable 285/300 with 18 tens! She was also chosen to be a BMS cheerleader for as a result of her hard work and tumbling talent. In addition, Abbie was selected by her teachers as the Outstanding Sixth Grade Girl! Anna Claire Toms is working hard this summer as a new member of the BMS TigerLine. They are preparing their routines for the pep rallies and games! I am so blessed to have the opportunity to work with these and so many other students each day. I will definitely miss the eighth graders as they move on to their freshman year at BHS but I look forward to the new sixth graders that will join us! If your student s accomplishments were not listed, it was certainly not an intentional oversight. If you are aware of any omissions or inaccuracies, please contact me as soon as possible so that can be corrected. I hope to keep our church and community updated on a more regular basis about the accomplishments of our BMS Tigers! 7 Servant of the Month 22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. Galatians 5:22-23 Green Long is a silent but powerful servant. He is a quiet, behind the scenes kind of guy, you never really see him or know he has been involved until things start to appear or come together. Once it is determined that Green had a hand in the crafting or building, he has moved on to something else. Green has been very involved with the Joseph Ministry and with moving furniture to Re-nesting. He has worked at Camp Caney as expert builder to make repairs and restoration of the grounds. Green has been instrumental in UMM Silent Auction building yard signs, cradles, Christmas decorations and cabinets and donating these items for fundraising. He constructed the racks for our clothes closet and Journey to Bethlehem. Without his help constructing Journey to Bethlehem scenes this event would not have been possible. Remember this past December when we couldn t find a reasonably priced camel to rent for Journey of Bethlehem? Well that was no problem because we have a Green Long in our midst and he hooked us right up with a wooden camel that got rave reviews. He serves as Co-leader for Journey to Bethlehem. He is a member of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class which his lovely wife Catherine leads. Green has served on numerous committees and is currently a Sunday counter. He has filled in for our Sr. Custodian, Anthony Brim, however it was determined that it took four men to do what Anthony does by himself. Green has also served on the Impact Benton team. Green served as a mentor during the confirmation series. What a wonderful service to our young, impressionable minds. Green Long is a great example for our young people. In the picture above, Green is holding his newest grandbaby who was born on June 18 in Kentucky. (see page 5 for a close-up of that bundle-of-joy, Olivia). Olivia makes the 9th grandchild for Green 3 boys and 6 girls! Green is someone that every church needs. You can call on him and count on the fact that he will always come through!
