1 Benton United Methodist Church From Pastor Danny... Grace and peace to you in the Name and Spirit of Jesus Christ! When you think of Easter, what comes to mind? Do you think of Easter dresses and that now is the acceptable time to wear white shoes? Do you think of Easter Egg Hunts and the challenge to find all of the eggs? Do you think of Easter baskets that the Easter Bunny has left for the children? (Dear Easter Bunny, kids love snickers!) Do you think of a wonderful Easter Sunday meal that includes ham and all of the trimmings? Do you also think of the amazing power of God to raise his Son from the dead? Do you also think of God s amazing love in that He gave His only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sin? Do you also think of God s amazing mercy that through the resurrection of Jesus from the dead we are forgiven? Do you also think that as we are forgiven we are freed to forgive? Easter is all of this and much, much more. In John 3:16, Jesus is conversing with Nicodemus about new life in the Spirit and about being born from above through water and the Spirit. Jesus says: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (NRSV) Jesus shared with his curious, night visiting Pharisee that God s gives us new life that changes everything. Do you believe in that love? Stations of the Cross Holy Week See page 1 & 3 for details In John s Gospel the word believe is used 82 times. That same word, believe is only used 407 times in the entire Bible (82 of which are found in John s Gospel the most of any book). What do you think is John s underlying message about Jesus Christ? Believing is primary in our relationship with God in Jesus Christ and in how we connect with the life-renewing, spirit-filling, soul-blessing, and death-defying love of God in Jesus Christ His Son. Do you believe that you are worth dying for? The Christian Band Mikes Chair has a song entitled Someone Worth Dying For? Here are the lyrics: You might be the wife, waiting up at night. You might be the man, struggling to provide feeling like it's hopeless. Maybe you're the son who chose a broken road. Maybe you're the girl thinking you'll end up alone. Praying God can you hear me? Oh, God are you listening? Chorus: Am I more than flesh and bone? Am I really something beautiful? Yeah, I want to believe, I want to believe that I'm not just some wandering soul, that you don't see and you don't know. Yeah, I want to believe, Jesus help me believe that I am someone worth dying for. I know you've heard the truth that God has set you free. But you think you're the one that grace could never reach so you just keep asking, oh, what everybody's asking. Chorus: You're worth it, you can't earn it. Yeah, the cross has proven, that you're sacred and blameless. Your life has purpose! You are more than flesh and bone. Can't you see you re something beautiful. Yeah, you gotta believe, you gotta believe. He wants you to see, He wants you to see that you're not just some wandering soul that can't be seen and can't be known. You gotta believe, you gotta believe that you are someone worth dying for. You're someone worth dying for. Someone worth dying for. Do you believe that you are someone worth dying for? Do you believe that God gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life? Do you believe that Jesus died for you and when He did, He took your sin (all your sin) to the grave with Him? Do you believe that when He arose from the dead that we need not fear the grave because we have eternal life through death and resurrection of Jesus Christ? Easter Egg Hunt April 7 at 2 :00 p.m. See page 4 for details Know that in the midst of all that Easter has become, the truth of Easter will always be that God s love in Jesus Christ is forever. There is nothing in all of creation that will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord! (Romans 8:39) Happy Easter! Grace and peace, Danny Gleason Senior Pastor Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him. Matthew 3:3 Skeeter Run April 21

2 Page 2 From Dianne April 2012 Holy Week Holy Week is the last week of Lent, the week immediately preceding Easter or Resurrection Sunday. It is observed at Benton UMC as a time to commemorate and re-enact the suffering (Passion) and death of Jesus through various observances and services of worship. Holy Week observances, call us to move behind the joyful celebrations of Palm Sunday and Easter, and focus on the suffering, humiliation, and death that is part of Holy Week. It is important to place the hope of the Resurrection, the promise of newness and life, against the background of death and endings. It is only in walking through the shadows and darkness of Holy Week and Good Friday, only in realizing the horror and magnitude of sin and its consequences in the world incarnated in the dying Jesus on the cross, only in contemplating the ending and despair that the disciples felt on Holy Saturday, that we can truly understand the light and hope of Sunday morning! Palm Sunday ~ April 1 This Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds who were in Jerusalem for Passover waving palm branches and proclaiming him as the messianic king. Join us as we enact the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem by the waving of palm branches and singing songs of celebration. Easter Cantata ~ April 4 at 6:30 p.m. The choir invites you to join them on Wednesday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. for an the Easter Cantata Near the Cross. Enjoy the music as we remember Christ s death and resurrection. Bring your neighbors, friends, family and a dessert to share after the Cantata. Maundy Thursday ~ April 5 at 6:00 p.m. This is sometimes called Holy Thursday as it commemorates the last meal shared by Jesus with his disciples before his crucifixion. Benton UMC will have a Passover Seder meal at 6:00 p.m. Passover is a time of remembering. Join your church family as we remember the story of God s grace throughout history and in our own lives. This will be more than a meal, as we confess our faith in the One who has acted in history. Good Friday ~ April 6 at 6:30 p.m. On this day, we will commemorate Jesus arrest, his trial, crucifixion and suffering, death, and burial. We as worshippers will experience some sense of the pain, humiliation, and ending in the journey to the cross. Good Friday is a day of mourning, both for the death of Jesus and for the sins of the world that his death represents. Service time begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends in silence as we leave the church. Easter Egg Hunt ~ April 7 at 2:00 p.m. Children are invited to our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Egg is a symbol of resurrection. Even though it is sealed, there is new life within. Easter or Resurrection Sunday ~ April 8 Christians all over the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus the Christ from the dead. Easter is the most openly joyful time of celebration of the church year. We begin with an Easter sunrise service at the home of Robert and Claudia Adley (611 Jessie Jones Drive) at 6:30 a.m. We will continue with traditional worship at 8:30 a.m. and contemporary worship at 10:50 a.m. Sunday school classes will begin at 9:40 a.m. Applying Bible Principles A Christian business owner once observed, I would rather do business with a non-christian any day than with a Christian. His statement was a descriptive commentary on a sad state in the lives of some Christians who fail to pay their bills or to deal with their debts as promised. A debt simply represents a promise to pay. Nothing more. Nothing less. Whether the debt is to purchase a car, a house, braces for the kids teeth, or to facilitate a purchase by using a credit card, the issue is the same. By creating a debt, we also create simultaneously an obligation and promise to pay. Larry Burkett wrote this, Probably forty percent of all American families are in debt in a typical year. They re unable to make the monthly payments on the money they borrowed. Many actually borrow more money to make payments on the money they ve already borrowed. We who are Christians of all people should pay our debts, not only for our reputations and personal integrity, but also because what we do is a direct reflection on our Lord. Or as the Apostle Paul expressed it so clearly in 1 Thessalonians 4:12, we are to walk honestly towards people who are outside the family of God so that our daily lives may win their respect. Psalm 37:21 says that to borrow (to create a debt) and then not repay it is wrong. But on a positive note, this same verse also says that the person who is righteous shows mercy by repaying debts and by giving to the needs of others. By the way, do people know you re a Christian by how you pay your bills and by how you give to others? Louisiana Skeeter Run On April 21, 2012, SWAT Teams all over Louisiana will gather for a One Mile Run/Walk Walk to help stomp out malaria. 3 Page 3 March 2012 Events Stations of the Cross Another way to experience the passion of our Christ is to walk the the way of the Cross, marking the stops that Jesus made as He carried His cross to Golgotha. The Stations of the Cross is set up in the Worship Center during Holy Week, the first week of April. The stations along the Via Dolorosa (way of sorrows) in Jerusalem mark places where Jesus stumbled or interacted For centuries, Christians have traced Jesus footsteps as He went to be crucified, either literally as they make the walk in the holy city or figuratively as they symbolically walk through the Stations of the Cross. United Methodist Women Tables of Love Luncheon & Style Show 2012 Our Worship Team has set up 15 Stations of the Cross in the Worship Center. Along with the 12 original stations, they have added a final three to depict His being taken down from the cross, being laid in a tomb, and being resurrected. At each station there is a picture and a scripture to describe the situation; there are also instructions for each pilgrim to interact in some way, to meditate on a provocative question, to utter a prayer. It can be a deeply moving experience to make this pilgrimage during Holy Week and you are encouraged to take the time, anytime the church is open, from Palm Sunday through Good Friday. A leaflet has been prepared, using the Cursillo and Emmaus worship resource, Everyone s Way of the Cross, by Clarence Enzier. It will further explain each station and guide your meditation as you make your own walk with our Savior. This is such a fitting way to close the season of Lent, by putting ourselves in the Passion of our Lord, in His last hours. May you be blessed by the experience. To support or establish the certainty or validity of; verify. 2. To make firmer; strengthen: Working on the campaign confirmed her intention to go into politics. 3. To make valid or binding by a formal or legal act; ratify. 4. To administer the religious rite of confirmation to. This is the "official" definition of the word confirm, and confirmation is defined as the "act of confirming." So, what does this say about the United Methodist (with roots in Reform Judaism) tradition of Confirmation? What is, and isn't, happening during Confirmation? And, as is always God's question of us concerning anything that comes from Him, what do we do with Confirmation? In the United Methodist Church, we do not believe that baptism "saves" a person. We see baptism as an acknowledgment of God's claim on a person (that exists for everyone) and the grace that He extends into our lives that protects, guides, and hopefully, leads us to respond to God's invitation into His family through Jesus Christ. We Wesleyans know this grace as "prevenient grace." When we have our child baptized, or are baptized ourselves, we are acknowledging God's grace and then committing to live into that grace by joining with Christ's body, which is the Church (notice the big "C"). One more important note about our faith is that we do not believe God's grace to be "irresistible." We believe that every person must choose to accept or reject the gracious opportunity God lays before us. Now, this "acceptance" of God's grace can and does come in all forms, shapes, sizes, times, and methods. One of which can be through Confirmation. During the Confirmation time, an individual will learn about what Christ teaches about being a disciple, what the United Methodist tradition of worship and servanthood is (as well as some insight into other denominations), a litte bit about church history, and what it means to serve Christ as a part of their local church (in our case, Benton United Methodist Church). Once again, this is an invitation to grace, which is only as good as the response given. We do not believe that completing Confirmation then "saves" a person. It is only through the blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection are we justified before God and assured of Heaven. Confirmation can, however, be an incredible vehicle to communicate that invitation, and give an opportunity to accept. We want people to be able to "count the cost" before making their decision to follow Christ and His teachings. So, the next time you see one of the two adults who have agreed to serve the Church (again with the big "C") by teaching confirmation, Kim Cox and Leslie Cram, be sure you thank them for this incredible gift they have given. And the next time you see a Confirmand (one of our many 6th grade students currently undergoing Confirmation), encourage them to keep up the good work. They need your support and approval as they make this most important decision. Lastly, pray that they, you, and I will all be able to do our best to live up to the promises we will all make on Confirmation Sunday. See you then. Chris

The recommendation came as a result of phone interviews with three other companies, packets of information, recommendation from trusted sources and a personal interview with Mike Hedges, Senior Ministry Strategist, with Horizons. The cost for the 3 years of consultation will be $26, This will include days at our church working with the steering committee (yet to be selected), and a complete diagnostic of our financial stewardship as well as a Potential and Possibility study prior to the actual campaign. The Church Council voted unanimously to contract with Horizons. Phase one will be conducted in April and May. The campaign will begin mid-august and conclude before Thanksgiving.
