1 IN sight MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF BENTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MAY 2015 Grace and peace to you in the Name and Spirit of Jesus Christ! What are you doing for Pentecost? The Day of Pentecost is the day of the Christian Year that we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means fiftieth day. Pentecost is also a Jewish festival and is fifty days after Passover. For Christians, Pentecost is fifty days after Easter. The Day of Pentecost is also known as the birthday of the Church. Pentecost is a day that ranks right up there with Christmas and Easter. So what are you going to do? There are two accounts in the New Testament as to how the Holy Spirit was given. We read in John 20:19-23: When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. We also read in Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. What are you doing with the Holy Spirit that Jesus gave you when you took Jesus as your Lord and Savior? How are you allowing the Spirit to fill you and lead you into ministry in the power Name of Jesus Christ? I think we often take for granted the Spirit of God that is within us and between us. This Holy Spirit is powerful! God created all that there is through this same Holy Spirit! (Genesis 1) God breathed into us the breath of life His Holy Spirit! (Genesis 2) Sins are able to be forgiven through this same Holy Spirit! (John 20) The effects of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11) are reversed through the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit! (Acts 2) God builds up the body of Christ through the gifts of Holy Spirit! (Ephesians 4) God speaks to us through His Spirit! (Romans 8) And this list could go on and on and on! My point is this God s plan involves us receiving His Spirit as take Jesus as our Lord and Savior. His plan involves us allowing His Spirit to work through us for His Kingdom. Paul wrote to Timothy saying: 6 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 7 for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. 8 Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:6-10 What are you doing for Pentecost? What are you doing with God s Holy Spirit in loving God and loving neighbors? Are you open to the Holy Spirit working a miracle in you and through you? Are you ready to forgive as you have been forgiven? Are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit to move in, through and you? Are you ready for Pentecost? Grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Danny Gleason Senior Pastor From the Pastor

3 Bodies in Motion: A Personal Testimony There s an exercise class that meets regularly at Benton UMC that has given me a new lease on life and I want to share that good news with you! I asked our leader, Carrie Bamburg, if I could be her Poster Child and advertise this awesome opportunity, open to everyone no matter your age or physical condition, personality or attitude. In this class, everyone goes at their own pace, doing whatever little (or majorly athletic) activity they can, always with the thought of pushing the limits just a bit. When I started a year ago, I could not do a jumping jack, now I do sets of 25; I started with no weights, now I use 5 lbs; I was weak and breathless at the end of a session, now I m energized. I have better balance, better control of my body, more stamina and much more strength. It is truly amazing how much I ve improved. As my husband says, we re in the 4th quarter of our lives now, and I m in better shape than I ve been in years. So come and join us! We re called Bodies in Motion and that s our goal just to move! We meet Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 9:00 AM and Tuesday & Thursday at 5:00 PM (normally). Carrie does something different for each session so they are never boring or routine. The cost is $35 a month or $5 a session. Add it to your routine... and I ll see you there. ~Pastor Cheryl BENTON UNITED METHODIST WOMEN UMCOR Trip Six ladies from our church served at UMCOR, in Baldwin, LA, March 29 - April 2, In back row: Billie Mack, Louise Carter, Irma Kennedy, Joann Horton, in front: Pat Mosher and Dianne Wilkinson. This campaign is to replace the shingles on the roof of the original building that is now the Daycare and Sunday School classrooms. This roof is 15 years old with 15 year shingles and needs to be replaced before it causes greater problems. The roof will require 160 squares to cover and will cost about $35,000. Simple math results in a per square cost of $220 per square. Therefore, the campaign is to sell 160 squares at $220 each. The campaign has no time limit. It will continue until all 160 squares are sold. You can buy less than an entire square or buy part of a square each month until all are sold. Partial squares can be bought only as follows; 1/2 a square at $110 or even 1/4 square at $55. Purchase with check, cash, or money order. Place in one of the RED enveloped available throughout the church, mark on the envelope the amount enclosed and indicate for RAISE THE ROOF. Then, put in offering plate on Sunday or turn in at church office. This campaign and any offering you make is not intended to be a substitute for your regular tithe but an additional offering to help preserve what God has provided for Benton United Methodist Church. Please pray about this campaign and do what you can to help preserve this building that is so very vital to our mission to "Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the World". You can see how we are progressing by watching the charts that will be posted in the main hall until this campaign is complete. 7
