3 United Methodist Women Open Door Sunday School s Newest Study Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It September 14, 2014, Room A206, 10:00 a.m. Join Adam Hamilton for a six-week journey as he travels to England, following the life of John Wesley and exploring his defining characteristics of a Wesleyan Christian. Wesley s story is our story. It defines our faith and it challenges us to rediscover our spiritual passion. Wesley s message and his faith continue to speak to 21st-century Christians calling for a revival of our hearts and souls so that our world might be changed. Young Adult Group Fall Gatherings Join a group of young adults as we gather every Thursday, starting September 4 th, we will meet from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at OPA (2050 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704), to dialogue and discover what a new kind of Christianity would look like right here in Austin. In the book Daring Greatly we will explore how vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren t always comfortable, but they are never weakness. Regenerates - Next Study The Regenerates Sunday school class will begin a new study, Living the Psalms, A Confidence for All Seasons, by Maxie Dunnam, Sunday, September 7, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in rooms A (Adult Education Bldg.). Designed for individuals and groups, this sevensession study book explores the Psalms - the stories of God s presence with us. Maxie Dunnam uses stories and his interpretation of the Psalms to show how they relate to life experiences. Each chapter discusses two or three psalms and includes discussion questions. Youth Choir Ice Cream Social 1:00 PM Saturday, September 20 Children s Building - C111/Great Room Mary/Martha Circle Meeting - September 8 Mary Martha Circle of OHUMW starts up again in September with our first meeting on Monday September the 8th at 11:15 in the Fellowship Hall. Our speaker will be Rev. Jeff Saddington who is a volunteer chaplin with Austin Hospice; he will be speaking to us about the ins and outs of hospice care. He spoke to the Open Door Sunday School class earlier this year and was very informative. So mark your calendars and plan to attend. Watch for more details about lunch in the next Cornerstone and the Sunday bulletin. Wed. AM Fall Study Begins The Wed. AM Study Group is beginning their first fall study Wednesday, September 10 th, at 10 a.m., in the Adult Education Building, room 201. The study will be God Is Not Dead - with the movie that was shown in theaters last year. After getting acquainted and watching the movie together for the first two weeks, they will use an adult study guide of the same name for about 6 weeks of further study. Now, at the beginning of the study year, is a good time to join this group of women who enjoy friendship with study together. New members are especially welcome. Child care will be provided; we only meet when school is in session. Join Chloe Circle! Chloe circle is a group of women dedicated to the service of Christ. We combine our love for good food and desire to serve others with fun filled fellowship. We enjoy each other s company during our service and during our programs. 4 FAITH FRIENDS New Small Group for Kids Faith Friends is our new and exciting program for third-fifth graders. This group will meet once a month on a Friday evening for pizza and a discussion of various faith topics, including the Bible, church history, the sacraments, church membership, and faith topics of interest to the participants. Each gathering will be led by a pastor or church leader with the help and support of parents and will include hands on activities, videos, games, etc., as appropriate for the topic. We will meet on the third Friday of each month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Great Room, September-May. Our first gathering will be Friday, September 19 th. The registration fee is $25, which helps pay for pizza and supplies, and a cool t-shirt. Please sign your child up to join Faith Friends by ing Suzanne Steves at suzanne@oakhillumc.org. Corner ACOLYTE TRAINING NEXT SUNDAY - 09/14 All interested third, fourth, and fifth graders are invited to join us for the training. Being an acolyte is an important job and great way for older children to serve in the church. Current acolytes are encouraged to attend to help show new acolytes how it s done! If you have questions please contact our Acolyte Coordinator, Aggie McAlester at aggie.mcalester@austin.utexas.edu. Hope to see many of you here! OHUMC held the Back to School Open House and Blessing of the Backpacks August 24 th. Many kids and youth brought their backpacks to be blessed during the three morning worship services. Blessing of the Backpacks August 24, 2014 Our Wednesday evening suppers and activities are back! On Wednesday, September 3 we had a carnival themed kick-off event. Lots of people, lots of excitement, lots of fun! We feasted on a fried chicken dinner, and had popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy. While adults and youth attended the ReCharge service, the children were treated to carnival games and fun. Balloon tying, face-painting and the Sno-Cone truck were very popular with the kids! Many thanks to all who helped in so many ways to make the Carnival event so much fun!
