Alternative Giving Ideas Below is a list of alternative giving ideas compiled by the A Different Kind of Christmas class that ended Nov. 18. The class would like to share the list with the entire congregation as a follow-up to what they ve learned together and as a way to contribute to the greater good. For Advent & Christmas Day: Do a Reverse Advent Basket place a food or toiletry item in an Advent basket each day of Advent and give the entire basket to someone in need or to an organization helping those in need. Use an Advent calendar of action ideas to guide you through each day of the Advent season. Include the 12 Days of Christmas, too! Do one nice thing each day of Advent for someone include strangers along with your friends. Light an Advent candle each Sunday. Sing Happy Birthday, Jesus on Christmas morning before opening gifts. Have a Jesus birthday cake for Christmas dessert. For Gift-Giving: Limit the amount you spend this year and stick with it. And avoid the after-christmas debt that it takes months to pay off. Give homemade cookies and/or candy. Frame a special photo. Give fair trade items. Give an experience or an adventure, such as a concert! Support Oak Hill UMC s Agape Christmas Market each year. Give a Heifer International gift in your loved ones names. Go to their website and select the packages you can afford. Then let each of your loved ones choose the one that appeals to them. Heifer International will send them an acknowledgement of the gift sent in their honor. Great for grandchildren and people who don t need a thing. Check out the Cokesbury Book Store online they have many reasonably priced gifts and books (some fair trade) that keep the focus on the Incarnational birth of Christ and it s the United Methodist Church s official bookstore. Do Something for Others: Ask a lonely friend or neighbor or church member to have Christmas dinner with you. Give your time to a shut-in by visiting them. Go caroling at a senior living facility be sure you have permission first. Take new bags of pet food to a pet shelter. Send Christmas cards to the military. Participate in Angel Tree ministry or a similar project. Do Brown Santa as a family. Adopt another family and supply their needs and/or dinner. Donate to a mental health facility. Donate to a children s charity, such as Ronald McDonald House or M.D. Anderson. Donate new blankets, new coats and/or new socks to a homeless shelter.
