Don s Message Tidings 2016 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4 As we are concluding this Easter Season we are fast approaching Pentecost. On 15th we celebrate the Day of Pentecost which as the verses quoted above tell us when a large number of people were gathered in Jerusalem expecting something great to happen, as Jesus told the disciples earlier, but not really knowing what to expect, the Holy Spirit, God s presence came to them in a very visible way with tongues of fire appearing on each of their heads. Then they began telling of the wonderful acts of God in languages they hadn t previously known, but could now use freely to share the Good News! We sometimes call this the Birth - Day of the Christian Church. This month in the presence of that same Holy Spirit we have two major celebrations on Sunday, 1st. We are celebrating fifty years of life together as a congregation, as a community of faith. We have been blessed with great pastoral and lay leadership throughout these many years and are thankful to God for the many blessings that have been shared among us and within our community here in Carmel Valley. We also have another big reason to celebrate. On 8th we are celebrating Confirmation Day with our youth and families as our Confirmation students are affirming the promises made for them in their Baptism. It s a great day for all of us to rejoice and give thanks to God for the commitment and support of our members and friends in the passing on the Christian faith that has been important to all of us. At the risk of sounding trite, I will say it again God is Good and it s great that we are all God s children. I know some of you have summer plans that will take you away St. Philip s for a while. We wish you safe travel, good health, and great joy as you travel other roads this summer. We look forward to all of us being together again as summer ends. 2 Help With Contacts Tidings 2 Sound and Beauty - Finishing touches We need your help! No, this is not a recruiting tool, however it is just as important. Besides an aging congregation we have many others we would like to keep track of. We are starting an emergency contact list for all that would like to participate. When we don t see you in church, we get concerned and would like to find out what s going on. With a contact list we could check in to see what is happening. If you would provide us with your name and an emergency contact person that would be most helpful. We may be asking you if we don t hear you, it s because we care! You can write it out and drop it in the offering plate or it to Marcie: info@stphilipslutheran.org Thanks, Leadership Team Barbara and I have been members of St. Philip s since During that time there have been many physical changes to the church and property, including the addition of the educational wing, altering the fellowship hall, adding pews, changing hymnals and doing the back patio. The most recent change was the removal of the large iconic oak tree in the front of the church and the addition of the semi-circle drive at the entrance. Included in that project was a plan to have a walkway go the parking lot by the cross to the front door to replace one that was there before the tree was removed. We are now initiating a fund drive to complete that project. The cost to do this project is about $ we have allocated $3000 the landscape fund toward this goal. A second fund raising project is to replace our organ that was purchased in It is a 1975 model Allen Organ and has served us well over the years. However, recently it died. We have explored repairing it, however, we would still have a very old and outdated model without any guarantee that it would continue to function. We have decided to pursue purchasing a newer generation organ with more capabilities and a much better instrument. The cost of this instrument is about $8000. In the past we have used Charity Match as a fund raiser; however, there is no program like that available. We are looking for creative ways in which to raise money for both of these projects. Matching funds, fund raisers, sales, etc.? We invite your ideas. You may donate to either or both projects, make sure you make your donations clear as to where you would like them to go. Tidings 3 NOTES FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM At our most recent Leadership Team meeting we continued to carry on with the business of the church. It might be noted that, thanks to several different people, there has been quite a bit of painting done on the church, the floor replaced in the women s restroom, and the toilet replaced in the handicapped restroom. Since we have had Pastor Don as a part time pastor we have been trying to arrange for some Sundays free. Sierra Pacific Synod Assembly will take place June 3 rd - 5 th (Friday through Sunday) at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. ELCA Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, is coming as the guest and Keynote speaker. This year the assembly planning team is focusing on an agenda that provides numerous opportunities to hear Bishop Eaton, celebrating mission and ministry while "we are church together. Pr. During the summer months, as a change, Setting 10 liturgy ELW will be used. In September, when schedules are back to normal, the Chicago Folk Service will resume every 3 rd Sunday of the month. On June 5 th, Psalm 150 Band will provide the music, using the Haugen liturgy, for the service, subbing in Lindamarie s absence. The Anniversary Committee has chosen the theme The Church the Rock for 1 st St. Philip s 50 th Anniversary celebration. The Hymn of the Day will be Built on the Rock, which was sung at the first service on 1, A short program will be held in the sanctuary following the worship service. Confirmation of eight youth will be held 8 th, which is also Mothers Day. White stoles were made for the confirmands to wear. St. Philip s 2016 Call Committee Hymn selections were made April June 12 th. The next committee meeting date is Wednesday, 25 th at 10:30. Input is always welcome, as the goal is a worshipful experience for all each week. 5 Treasurer s Report Tidings 5 Adult Education Our Adult Education sessions will continue on Sunday, 22, after the 10:00 a.m. worship service with more conversation about Alzheimer s disease March March Income $11, March Expenses $10, Balance $1, April April Income $15, April Expenses $14, Balance $ and other challenges facing many people in our lives. Our focus for the 22nd session will be on ways we can be a caring community for all, especially learning about ways to reach out to those with Alzheimer s and other memory-related conditions. We will also share ideas and resources about how to care for our friends, families and coworkers. Anita Johnson and Jon Ericson will lead the session. Please join us! There will be copies of the resource materials available for anyone interested; the resource books we have used for the sessions, called Through the Wilderness, will be available in the St. Philip s Library. Many excellent resources can be found at the website for the Alzheimer s Association, Two thought-provoking and heartfelt films about Alzheimer s disease and the impact on the people s lives are Iris, about the writer Iris Murdoch, and Still Alice, a recent award-winning film. PBS has also recently aired several programs on recent research on Alzheimer s disease; more information can be found on the website, Your spare coins can change lives! St. Philip s has raised $ this year that will be donated to the Food Bank.

6 Tidings 6 Reflecting on Pentecost LIVING OUR BAPTISM... Five Gifts of Discipleship When a baptized Christian affirms the faith (often called confirmation) the presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of baptism and asks the question: Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? RESPONSE: We do, and ask God to help and guide us. (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, p. 236) And so begins a daily claiming and re-discovering of the God-given gifts of discipleship. These gifts overlap and are intertwined as one gift flows into another and into faithful living. FIVE GIFTS OF DISCIPLESHIP during Pentecost Pentecost is an ideal season of the church year to emphasize LIVING OUR BAPTISM and discover the five gifts of discipleship. Background: Each year on Pentecost Sunday, the assigned scripture text for worship is Acts 2. The story occurs after Jesus had been crucified, risen death, and ascended to heaven. The disciples were in one place in Galilee as Jesus instructed. Although Jesus had warned them about his death and predicted his resurrection, they were unprepared for all that had transpired. Their hopes were shattered their future was unclear. What was next? Jesus had tried to instruct them for when he no longer would be able to be with them on their earthly pilgrimage. Jesus had promised to send the Advocate to be with them. And so they waited. Scared and with no vision of the future, they waited. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2:1-4 NRSV) Today: The Festival of Pentecost comes 50 days after Easter Sunday and typically falls between mid- or early June. It is the longest season of the church year, extending to the season of Advent. Whereas the other seasons of the church year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter) emphasize some aspect of the life of Jesus, Pentecost emphasizes the life of the Spirit-infused church disciples in action. The Festival of Pentecost is a wonderful occasion to incorporate the Affirmation of Baptism into worship either for confirmands and/or the whole congregation. The Holy Spirit is still at work, calling, gathering, and empowering followers of Jesus to grow in discipleship. SEASON OF PENTECOST: INWARD AND OUTWARD GIFTS The five gifts of discipleship can be divided into two categories: Inward Gifts of Discipleship: MY life is blessed! Live among God s faithful people Hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper Outward Gifts of Discipleship: MY life blesses others! They are an active, talented, involved group of young people, interested in helping their families, their schools, their church, their community, and the world. At St. Philip s, they ve participated as acolytes, ushers, musicians, nursery helpers, work day participants (painting, sanding, weeding, cleaning, etc.) and more. Continue to encourage and pray for them all. The TROTTER family Matt, Erin and parents, Thom & Ruth, and a variety of pets. The whole family volunteers for the Big Sur Marathon and the PG Triathalon Both kids enjoy spending time with their grandfather, Anton Prange. MATT is in 9 th grade at Carmel High School. His favorite subjects are AP Human Geography (ask him what that means fascinating!) and biology. He d like to become a doctor, maybe a brain surgeon. He played water polo, & made the Jr. Olympics in swimming, his favorite pastime. A memory at St. Philip s chasing lizards with friends. ERIN is in 7 th grade at Carmel Middle School, where she enjoys nature studies and writing. She runs track, cross country, plays basketball & swims. She loves animals, would like to get a snake or a horse (a dream, not a reality), She would like to be a veterinarian, loves working with animals. She volunteers at Star Riders, helping disabled children ride horses. Memories at church include planting the Children s Garden, finding lizards, and Easter egg hunts. ANNA WATSON and parents, Susan & Fred, dog Tazzie, fish Majong ANNA is in 7 th grade at Stevenson School Carmel Campus (RLS). Her favorite subjects are Science & ceramics. She enjoys running (she has participated in PG Triathlon events), biking, reading, art, camping with the family, as well as yearly summers at the Cabin in Minnesota & family Christmases in Australia. Memories at St. Philip s include Easter egg hunts with Erin, being an angel in Christmas programs, Vacation Bible Camps, Sunday School during church.

9 Tidings 9 CONFIRMANDS 2016 The HANSCH family Heidi, Elisabeth, Amalie and parents, Ernst & Audrey and younger brother, Tristan, plus a 17-year old cat, Mr. Gray HEIDI, ELISABETH, & AMALIE all attend All Saints Day School, just across the road St. Philip s. Heidi & Elisabeth, twins, are in 7 th grade and Amalie is in 6 th. Heidi & Elisabeth play piano, and both play 1 st flute in Youth Music Monterey Orchestra, performing in 3 concerts a year. They also participated in Central Coast Honors Band. Amalie plays violin and likes to cook. All three swim on the Monterey Bay Swim Club and are excited to start lifeguard training camp in Vancouver this summer. The Hansch family loves to travel together. Heidi wrote a paper for Funnies National History Day about 19 th century Paris and is looking forward to their trip this summer, spending 3 weeks in Paris & Berlin, where she can see what she researched in person. The Hansch s came to St. Philip s 5 years ago, and their memories include gathering to have a meal, decorating the church for Christmas, and having an Easter egg hunt on the playground. TREVOR PANDHER and parents, Reggie & Sandy joined St. Philip s in 2013, and all like being involved in many ways. TREVOR is in 8 th grade at Seaside Middle School, looking forward to being in the MAOS program at Monterey High School next year. He played flag football, Pony baseball, & worked on the yearbook committee. His favorite sport is golf, so one of his memories at St. Philip s is participating in the annual golf tournament, partnering with Mel Kelly. He was in the First Tee Golf program for youth, volunteered 250 hours and was given the 2015 Participant of the Year Award. This year he s going to be a Junior Coach. He s going to Youth on Course Caddie Academy this summer, then will be able to earn some money as a caddy when called. JESSE RUEDIGER and parents, Najoo and Tim, are members of Faith Lutheran Church in Seaside. JESSE is in 9th grade at Monterey High School in the MAOS program. He loves all sports, ran track and cross country for his school. At home he likes to play the piano and shoot baskets. Jesse joined the class because of friendship with Matt Trotter.
