1 St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Reformation Sunday October 26, 2014, 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. T oday is Reformation Sunday, observed on the last Sunday of October each year. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, Germany. These were ninety-five reasons that Luther thought the church should reform. He was reacting against certain practices within the church, especially the sale of indulgences, which he thought led people to believe that they could buy God s forgiveness. Luther s goal was the reformation of the church, not the beginning of a new one. But his Ninety-five Theses sparked a controversy that took on proportions he could never have imagined. The liturgical color is red, symbolizing the fire of the Holy Spirit to reform and renew the church. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. The demands of your love seem too hard for us to embrace, so we often choose to ignore it altogether. You forgive our sin, yet we abuse this freedom as if it were a license to selfishness. You give us the gift of your saving grace in the cross and empty tomb, yet we make it cheap without serious repentance. Forgive us Lord, the sins we know in our hearts, as well as the sins of which we are unaware. Use your forgiving love to wake us up and experience the reforming power of the Holy Spirit. Thanksgiving Donations for Treehouse Once again this year, The Treehouse After School Program is requesting donations from the congregation to provide Kroger gift cards for each of our families. Helping provide our Treehouse families with their Thanksgiving meals has been a St. Andrew tradition for many years, and is always truly appreciated by the families. This year we will be accepting your donations a little differently. On Sunday, October 26, Treehouse will be set up in the narthex after both worship services to receive your donations. When you donate, you will have the opportunity to choose a one-of-a-kind fall decoration made by a Treehouse student. Meredith Smith, daughter of Connie Reynolds, has graciously arranged for us to receive matching funds for these donations through Modern Woodmen. So please stop by the narthex on the 26th, make your donation, and receive a unique fall decoration for your Thanksgiving table. (If you are unable to stop by that day, but would still like to donate, we can receive your contribution in the church office before October 26.)

4 Fall Festival of Faith with the Rev. Dr. Perryn Rice November 8 & 9, 2014 Please join us in welcoming the Rev. Dr. Perryn Rice to St. Andrew as our 2014 Fall Festival of Faith speaker. Perryn is the Senior Pastor of Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Perryn has extensive experience as a leader in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as Stated Clerk of its General Assembly and as Moderator of the Brazos River Presbytery. Perryn s topic for the weekend with be Postmodern Christianity in the 21st Century. Festivities start Saturday with dinner in Fellowship Hall at 5:30pm and a presentation by Perryn at 6:15pm. We continue Sunday with Perryn preaching at both 8:30am and 10:50am services and a special presentation during the Sunday School hour. Please join us for this special event in the life of St. Andrew. Women s Advent Book Study Resumes November 5 Join our group, led by Lisa Patterson, this fall for the Advent study. We will discuss Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer by Rowan Williams, which is available in the Narthex for $8. We will learn more about the essentials of Christianity in this ecumenical group. Come join us study a simple book about complex concerns. Bring a brown bag lunch, if you wish. Pumpkin Fundraiser Results Thank you for visiting the Pumpkin Patch in the Narthex on Sunday. St. Andrew raised over $800 for the staff of The Children s Place to attend NAEYC. Thank you to all of St. Andrew for your generosity! Children s Bibles Needed Recently, a generous gift was given to buy Story Bibles to put in the pews in the sanctuary for the use of our children during worship. We still need to purchase additional Bibles in order to put Bibles in all of the pews. If you would like to purchase a Bible in honor or memory of someone or just want to give a donation to purchase the Bibles, your help would be greatly appreciated. Please make out checks or donations to St. Andrew noting in the memo line of your check children s bibles. Diaper Drive Community Outreach Committee calls on congregation members to help with the annual St. Andrew Diaper Drive. From September through October, the committee asks for donations of infant and toddler diapers or pull-up adult diapers. The diapers will benefit both Interfaith Ministries diaper program and also some Our Daily Bread clients. Diapers should be placed in the 2 collections boxes by the soda machines outside of Fellowship Hall. Become an Usher at St. Andrew Are you looking for a way to get involved, or a place you can serve at St. Andrew? As Usher Coordinator, I will soon be making up the schedule for the 10:50am Sunday services, Easter, and Christmas Eve services for Usher teams serve for three semi-consecutive Sundays or on three of the six 10:50am Intinction Sunday services. Training, if needed, is given to each team at the beginning of their three-sunday rotation and each usher will also receive a copy of the Usher Responsibilities sheet. If you prefer to serve at just one service, there are opportunities on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. A substitute list for coverage in case of illness or other circumstances has been developed. Alan Baroody, Interim Minister, Arrives Sunday, November 2 It is with great pleasure that we welcome Alan Baroody as the Interim Minister for St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Alan will preach both services on his first Sunday here and a reception for all ages will be hosted by the Worship and Music Committee at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. We look forward to working with Alan on this next phase of our life together as we trust in God s sure and abiding presence moving into the future. Christmas Pageant Meeting Sunday, November 2 Attention all children, ages K-5! Casting call for our annual Christmas Pageant is Sunday, November 2! If your child is interested in being a part of The Story of Christmas this year, please join us in the fellowship hall just following the 10:50am service on November 2. We will share pizza together and talk about the pageant, including assigning parts. This is such a special tradition in the life of St. Andrew and a wonderful way to help the true story of Christmas come to life through the voices of our very own St. Andrew children.
