Oak St. Denton, TX Church Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm Sunday Worship Schedule 8:30am & 10:50am Children s Chapel - after the children s 10:50am From Our Pastor Dear St. Andrew Church Family, Welcome to the Fall Guide for life together at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Fall is a time for new beginnings. New beginnings can bring with them a new energy and investment in the future. They can encourage us to look at what we re doing and choose to commit to doing that which is best rather than just that which is good. New beginnings can draw forth our best energies, creative spirits, fresh goals, renewed commitment and willingness to give all that we have to give to important tasks. Our Christian education ministry team of children, youth and adult workers met recently to discuss their new beginnings and set goals and objectives for the coming year. The goals are: 1) Enable and expand opportunities for all ages to intentionally serve in worship; 2) Create intentional opportunities for a variety of mission activities that include multiple generations, diverse experiences and varying time commitments; 3) Foster an environment that allows people to question, challenge and explore faith through fresh and different ideas that encourage people to take risks in order to seek growth; and 4) Move beyond the walls of St. Andrew with open hearts and minds to share our faith and our lives with each other and with those who are different than ourselves. It has been rightly noted that we encroached into areas that are not solely the area of Christian education. It was very satisfying to meet together with lay leaders and talk about our investment in the future and to look forward with hope, guided by our trust in the strong, sure steadfast love of Christ. Our Fall Guide gives opportunities for new beginnings in which we can all participate. There are new classes, choirs, mission opportunities, book studies, Bible studies, recreation opportunities, ways to serve and fellowship gatherings. It is our hope that you find a place(s) in which you can learn and serve. I look forward to our new beginnings this fall. Grace and peace, 2 Fall Guide 2014

3 welcome to st. andrew St. Andrew Presbyterian Church is a joyful community of faith committed to worshiping in ways that inspire awe and praise; Growing in God s Word; Practicing the radical hospitality of divine grace; Sharing God s love with people of diverse backgrounds and ages; Reaching out to human need in Denton and beyond; Growing in all forms of giving time, talent, and treasure; Becoming faithful disciples of Jesus as we learn to love God with all that is in us, and the neighbor as the self. We worship and study together on Sundays at 8:30am with soloists and 10:50am with chancel choir. Sunday School is at 9:30am, with a nursery for infants and young children and a Children s Chapel for pre-k and K children. We periodically hold a Service for Wholeness on weekday evenings where respite from busyness of life can be found, as well as weekly Bible studies and activities for men and women and various monthly gatherings. We serve our congregation, our community, and the world, including a Fall Festival of Faith and Stephen Ministry. We gather mid-week during Fall and Spring semesters for a Super Wednesday meal, program, and activities for all ages, including Chancel Choir, whose membership is open to all with no auditions, and a Handbell Choir. We have an active Youth ministry for middle and high school students and a dynamic program for elementary and pre-school children, including two children s choirs, which also attend a Worship and Music Conference at Mo Ranch in the summer. We provide The Children s Place, a preschool, and the Treehouse, an after school program for elementary children. We house Denton s ecumenical soup kitchen, Our Daily Bread, in Fellowship Hall M-F every week at noon, and we volunteer working with Hearts for Homes, Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Ministries, HOPE, Inc., the Denton Community Food Center, Spirit Horse, and mission trips throughout the year for all ages. how to become a member Membership at St. Andrew is the first step in what we consider a life-long process of discipleship, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Becoming a member affirms your faith in God and love for God s people. Membership is a commitment to this particular part of God s family, where we nurture growth in faith, worship, and service to others. We hope you find the simplicity of our membership process an engaging introduction to our life together. There are four steps to becoming a member of St. Andrew: 1. Fill out and turn in a New Member Information Form. You will find the forms on the Visitor Information table in the narthex. 2. Come to the parlor after the 10:50 worship service on the last Sunday of the month. The Session, our governing body, formally receives new members at that time. We receive new members in one of the following ways: Letter of Transfer (can be requested by our church office), Reaffirmation of Faith, or Profession of Faith and Baptism. 3. Join us during the 10:50 worship service the following Sunday (first Sunday of the month) when we recognize our new members during the service. 4. We encourage all new members to participate in an Inquirer s Class, which is offered periodically during the year Fall Guide 3

Music Ministry Chancel Choir Matt Stump, Director The Chancel Choir is open to all members of the congregation as well as non-members. The ability to read music is welcome but not required, nor is an audition. We rehearse in the adult choir room at 7:30pm on Wednesday evenings and in the chancel on Sunday mornings at 9:45am. If you feel the call to sing, please consider joining this group of dedicated singers. Handbell Choir Jean Harden, Director The handbell choir offers another option for musical participation in worship. This intergenerational group consists mostly of St. Andrew members but over the years has usually included non-members as well. The handbells play in worship several times each year, most often during Advent, Lent, and the Easter season. Some familiarity with music notation is strongly recommended, but previous ringing experience is not required. We will teach you what you need to know about ringing. Membership is open without audition to ringers from senior high through adult. Junior high students with substantial past musical experience may be accepted into the group after consultation with the director. Small ensembles for more advanced ringers are filled by invitation only, from the ranks of the principal group. The full handbell choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm in the adult choir room. Beginning date TBA The Awkward Dance of Church and State David Shields, Fellowship Hall October 15 - November 19 The course will begin with a review of the European experience of church and state relations and how this patterrn came to America through the settlement of the English colonies. This will be followed by an analysis of both the context and the content of the First Amendment. From there, the class will move to an exploration of issues related to implementing the First Amendment since its passage up to the present day, including issues of tax exemption and recent Supreme Court decisions such as the one involving Hobby-Lobby. David S. Shields is a retired Presbyterian Pastor. He is a speaker at the UNT Emeritus College. Art Journaling Leslie Kregel, Room 205 September 24 - October 29 This class will offer participants the opportunity to create an Art Journal. Art Journaling is all about the creative process; tying together visual artistic expression and the written word. Children s Choirs Jannette Hindman, Director Participating in choir gives children the opportunity to serve God as they offer up their singing in worship as a gift. The children s choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings after the meal in Fellowship Hall. The Covenant Choir, for second through fifth grades, rehearses from 6:15-7:00pm, and the Noel Choir, for kindergarten and first grades, rehearses from 7:00-7:30pm. The children s choir room is located on the floor directly above the church office. All children are invited to join a choir! Instrumental Ensemble Adam La Spata, Director The instrumental ensemble provides string, wind, and percussion musicians the opportunity to honor God by playing hymn orchestrations and original compositions and arrangements for instruments. We play in worship several times each year, seeking to enhance the meaning of the liturgical seasons. Membership is open without auditions to instrumentalists from high school age on up even if they are not St. Andrew members; junior high students with sufficient musical experience may be accepted into the group after consultation with the director. All members of the ensemble should be able, at a minimum, to play a notated hymn melody and harmony, at a tempo suitable for singing. The full ensemble rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:30pm in the adult choir room. Rehearsals will begin on September 14. For more information, please contact the director at

9 Making a Difference at ST. Andrew Ushers Ushering for the Sunday morning worship services is open to all youth and adults of the congregation. To learn more, please get in touch with June McNeill, Meals for CREW Wednesday Evenings, The Den, 6:15pm We would like to be able to provide a meal for the high school youth group each Wednesday night as a part of their extended youth group time. Food could be brought to church Wednesday evenings by 6:30pm and refrigerated or cooked in the Den kitchen as needed. We would serve about 15 students and adults. All Wednesdays from September 10 to November 19 are available. Please Shea Stephens (shea@saint-andrew.com) in the church office to sign up. Thank you! Please Don t Be Invisible! Wear Your Name Tag! Why would I want to wear a name tag when everyone already knows who I am? is a quote we often hear around St. Andrew. During this time of transition, there are many reasons it would be so helpful if everyone made a new commitment to wear the name tag. Not only new pastors or personnel would like to know our names and put them together with our faces, but so would visitors! With a church as large as St. Andrew with multiple services, it is even difficult for long-time members to know who some of the other members are and even more difficult to identify new members. Imagine how challenging it is for a new member to become part of such a large group! Name tags help new members feel more at home and a part of the church community, and name tags make it easier for visitors to be identified and feel more comfortable. So please brush aside your aversions to wearing name tags, and help us to be more welcoming to all! The Membership Committee thanks everyone for the many smiles, hospitality, and name tags! Super Wednesday Volunteers September 10 - November 19, Fellowship Hall, 4:30pm Many willing hands are needed on Wednesday evenings in Fellowship Hall in order for Super Wednesdays to be successful. Volunteers are needed each week to help serve the meal and staff the money table. Sign-up sheets will be posted in Fellowship Hall, so please volunteer an evening or two this spring. Pat Bennett will give you a reminder call as your turn to help approaches. Thank You! Stephen Ministry The Stephen Ministry motto is God s love in action. A fellowship of specially trained individuals, Stephen Ministers provide one-on-one Christian care for people in our congregation and community who are experiencing grief, loneliness, divorce, illness, disability, job loss, or any of life s many transitions. To receive care for yourself, a friend, or family member, talk to one of the pastors or Diane Smith, , dianesmith12345@yahoo.com. Contact one of our Stephen Leaders Diane Smith, Joyce White, Sherry Van Atta, David Strutton, or Karen Dower for more information about becoming a Stephen Minister. Hearts for Homes Mission FUNday October 25, 2014 Join a multi-generational group on October 25, 2014 to help serve the Hearts for Homes organization by repairing homes for the elderly in Denton. 10 Making a Difference in Denton Community Outreach Committee This diaconate committee provides opportunities for members of St. Andrew to assist with community needs identified from a variety of community agencies and organizations. Activities for the remainder of 2014 include the following: Diaper Drive (September through October): The committee will collect diapers for both children and adult for donation to Interfaith Ministries. Our Daily Bread Gift Bags (November through Mid- December): The committee will collect toiletry items that will be donated to Our Daily Bread for Christmas Gift Bags. Give-A-Meal-A-Month: Food is collected each month in the bins by the soda machines near Fellowship Hall for distribution to the Denton Food Center. The committee welcomes others to become a member of the Community Outreach Committee. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Treehouse Volunteers The Treehouse is St. Andrew s outreach mission to low-income children within the Denton Independent School District. Each day, 14 children from three different elementary schools are picked up on the St. Andrew bus and brought back to our Rec Center to spend their after school time with us. They enjoy a healthy snack, have time to rest or do homework, play in the gym or outside, have arts and crafts time, music time, and chapel time, providing them with a safe and loving environment. The Treehouse has one paid staff member/director, and we rely completely on volunteers to spend time with the children each afternoon and/or to provide their daily snack. If you feel called to this mission, please contact the director at stephanieraesz@ verizon.net. Those who give their time can do so weekly, a few times a month, or be on our substitute list. All you need to do is pass a background check and a brief orientation. Snack volunteers are provided with a schedule and a list of snack options. Please prayerfully consider whether your time and talents would match the needs of this special program. Give a Meal Our monthly food drive for the Denton Community Food Center is organized by the diaconate s Community Outreach committee. The monthly menu is in the bulletin each week, and the committee asks that we bring our staples to the collection bin by the Coke machine near the doors to Fellowship Hall. They will deliver the food to the Food Center at the end of the month. Our monthly food drive is a simple yet powerful way to help feed our hungry neighbors in Denton. Thank You! Birthday Endowment This endowment was established in 2007 and provides income to fund mission efforts not covered by the annual mission budget. Income has been used in previous years to send children and sponsors to Mo-Ranch s Worship and Music Conference, as well as for mission projects such as water filtration systems for people in Guatemala. Traditionally, members contribute an amount equal to the number of years being celebrated. So on your next birthday remember this endowment and contribute toward making a lasting difference in the lives of others. Our Daily Bread Many in Denton turn for help to this community soup kitchen housed at St. Andrew. The kitchen staff always needs volunteers, and there are other avenues to serve as well. To volunteer, visit their website, and follow the directions under Volunteering. 10 Fall Guide 2014
