1 THE MESSENGER GLENWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2931 Myrtle Street Erie, PA Address Service Requested Monthly Book Review DVD Laughing in the Dark by Chonda Pierce If you are familiar with the comic style of Christian comedienne Chonda Pierce, you know how open she is in conveying stories about her life through humor. In this docu-comedy, Chonda shares deeply the pain of loss, the personal cost of her fame and her struggle with depression. However, throughout the darkness she has experienced her faith in Jesus doesn't waver and is the source of strength and comfort for her and allows her to choose to keep moving forward in life. If you aren't familiar with Chonda, there are many clips of her comedy routines from some recent concerts. The triumphant message of this movie, available in the library, is the ultimate victory Jesus provides despite what life throws at us! NOTE: We are having a Library Awareness Sunday! Please come and join us for punch and cookies after each service on November 19 and "check out" what is available for your reading and viewing pleasure. Members of the library committee will be there to greet you and answer any questions. NON-PROFIT ORG. We hope you will be able to spend part of this day with us as we engage in this important conversation. 2 A Grander Vision Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat For Christ s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. [2 Corinthians 5:14-15] PAGE 2 I believe that the ability to think grand thoughts, dream grand dreams and do grand things comes from deep inside of us as one of the ways that we reflect the image of our Creator. For me, this comes into focus when I watch nature shows that display the beauty, power, and incredible diversity of plants and animals in our world that leaves me shaking my head in amazement at God s awesomeness. That grander vision is a longing in all of us. It may be frequently squelched by the troubles of this world but it ultimately cannot be taken from us. Paul speaks of this in his letter to the church at Corinth, For Christ s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Corinthians 5: To be compelled means to be forced or obliged to do something. While that may sound negative to our western ears that ring with words like freedom and choice, it speaks deeply to our Christian soul. Because Christ has died for me on the cross, that blazing reality ought to compel me to a response. But here is the rub - that compulsion is not based in duty or guilt but in love. As the reality of the work of Jesus penetrates my mind and heart, it causes to well up in me wave upon wave of gratitude, joy, and thanksgiving. My response becomes an act of love in response to God s first action for me. And out of that love comes the grander vision what awesome thing is God inviting me to participate in as part of my response to His great mercies? One of the greatest blessings we experience as followers of Jesus is the power of the church community. Throughout the course of history, it has been disciples of Jesus bound together in community by our common purpose of loving God and loving our neighbor that have transformed the world. Part of our focus in November will be the topic of stewardship (which means how we take care of the resources, financial and otherwise, that God has given to us to use). During worship on November 26, you will have the opportunity to make your commitment to the ministry of Glenwood Church for But as we move towards that day, I want to invite you to keep in mind the Grander Vision for why we bother to do it at all. The Grander Vision is that our giving expresses our love to God for what He has done for us, it shapes us into more faithful disciples, and it allows us to love our neighbor the hungry, the homeless, and the hurting. It is my love for Jesus and His love for me that compels me to give because I know that there is a Grander Vision that God is working out in my life, my city and my world and I get to be a part of that! 4 PAGE 4 With Gratitude Our family wants to thank you for the beautiful Wendell August Forge cross. Also thank you for all the years of friendship and religious support. The church was very important to our parents. The family of Vivian Small Glen and I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and overwhelming support on the unexpected death of my brother Bobby. The outpouring of kindness and love through cards, altar flowers, food and so on, really helped us get through this time of mourning. It truly is a blessing to be a part of this church family. Joy Grande LOCAL MISSION I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you as well as many others from you congregation who go out of the way to help in so many ways, the ministry of All God's Children. The welcome you extend to me, as well as the community, is a shining example of what the church should be and do. I am thanking God for all of you and all that you do. Our Mission Round Up would not have been possible without all the support you gave, as well as the most gracious use of your facility. FYI we raised over $4,500 after expenses. Also Words cannot express how much I appreciate all you do to support the work of All God s Children Ministries. This was demonstrated in a huge way when you opened your doors wide to allow us to use your wonderful facility for our 1 st Mission Round Up. So many from Glenwood helped in many ways, hosting tables, setting up, cleaning us, moving items in and out, gathering auction items and so much more. I can t thank you enough. I praise God for Glenwood UMC. Rev. Debbie Hills All God s Children Ministries Thank you for your generous donation of $25 to Wesley Woods Christian Camp and Conference Center. Nathaniel Greenway Wesley Woods Thank you for your donation of $815 to The Erie United Methodist Alliance (EUMA). Your donation will help us continue to shelter, feed, and minister to homeless families and individuals. We appreciate your prayers and your partnership in our mission. Also thank you for participating in the success of the 18 th Annual Ride for the Refuge as an event sponsor. Over 300 people gathered to pedal for a purpose on Labor Day. Together, with your support, we raised over $23,000 to help families staying at EUMA s The Refuge Homeless Shelter. Kurt Crays EUMA WORLD MISSION Brothers And Sisters, We praise the Lord for your partnership with us at the Good Samaritan Project of Haiti, Inc. Pastor Jean Enock Deroseney Good Samaritan Project, Haiti Communion Offering November 5 Our Communion offering in November will support the Erie-Meadville District s programming fund. 5 Operation Christmas Child Packing Party - November 5 It s finally here! National Collection Week is November 13-20, and we will host a packing party on November 5 at noon. The following Sunday, we will request the money required to ship the boxes, so keep that in mind as well. We still need toys to finish off, but as always, donations of any kind are welcome. As a reminder, this year we cannot send hard candy or toothpaste If you have questions, visit or contact Caroline Judd at carolinejudd7@gmail.com. Everyone has routines, the things we do every day. Just think of brushing your teeth. How many of you head straight for the bathroom to brush your teeth after a big meal? How many of you brush in the mornings? Or right before bed? If we are wise and want to stay healthy, we will all develop a good tooth brushing habit. It should be automatic. We eat, we brush. We head to bed, we brush first. It s good hygiene, and it doesn t take a lot of thought. Thank you so much for your continued support of this ministry! Unlike brushing, being thankful should never be an absent-minded habit. Being thankful should be intentional. We need to say thank you for little things and big things. God wants us to count our blessings and to express our thanks to him and to others. Being grateful is an important part of following Jesus. It lifts us up when we are down, and it helps us to be mindful of the blessings God gives us. During this month seek out a few people who have been kind to you, and let them know you appreciate all they ve done. Give thanks to the people who bless you, and give thanks to God who sends all good things from above. Partnering with Erie Youth for Christ (YFC) City Club to reach the students of our city.
