1 THE GLENWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2931 Myrtle Street Erie, PA Address Service Requested Communion Offering - February 1 This month s offering will support the ministry of Inter- Church Ministries of Erie County. This ecumenical and cooperative organization of churches works together to proclaim Jesus to our community. ICM operates a voucher program (in which we participate) to assist with emergency needs, a fund to assist families with funeral expenses on the death of a child, and a coat program, in addition to occasional joint worship services. Your special gift will assist our work together to those in need and remind the community that the things we believe together are greater than the things that often divide us as the Body of Christ. 2 ...often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. [Luke 5:16] PAGE 2 The Uncluttered Soul I recently started reading a book by Bill Hybels entitled Simplify. The basic premise of the book is that for the health of our souls, we really need to unclutter our lives in order to prioritize the things of God that matter most. Too many of us are overburdened, stressed out, and busy. But is that the life God intended for us or that we want to live? One of the things I enjoy about the church calendar are the various seasons of the year. They are often reflected in the colors you see in the sanctuary white for new life (Christmas and Easter; communion, funerals); red for celebration (Pentecost; ordinations; Holy Spirit); green for growth; and purple (or blue) for seasons of preparation (Advent and Lent). Once again, the season of Lent is upon us. Beginning with Ash Wednesday (February 18) and proceeding through the next 40 days until Easter, Lent invites us into a season of spiritual reflection. We begin with a reminder of our mortality on Ash Wednesday ( remember you are dust and to dust you will return ) and journey with Jesus to Jerusalem. Along the way, we reflect on the state of our souls as we shout with the crowds Hosanna! on Palm Sunday and then watch Judas betrayal, Peter s denials, and the disciples scatter like scared rabbits when Jesus is arrested. Those words of the disciples in the Upper Room echo in our ears Surely not I, Lord? as we let God shine a light into our souls through these stories. We know Easter and Resurrection is coming but are we too quick to jump to the party instead of grinding it out through hard work first? Lent invites us to slow it down and to take some time for introspection and evaluation. Hybels says this Often when people describe their too busy lives, they make it sound as if the overscheduling happened to them unwittingly, like they had no choice in the matter (p. 30). He goes on a little later saying my schedule is far less about what I want to get done and far more about who I want to become (p.35). Who am I becoming? Now that is a Lent-style question! But do you and I have the courage to ask it and really listen for an answer? I ll be honest I don t like to ask those type of questions when I already know that I m not going to like the answer. But that is precisely the time when I need to be asking the question. I invite you throughout the season of Lent to boldly ask that question over and over again. Listen for what God tells you and then DO IT! He may ask you to give something up or to add something on (or a combination of both). Luke reminds us that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:16). He was doing soul work in those times and it provided him an order, vision, and strength to face the challenges in his life and ministry. May we have the same courage and may it begin today. He loves me not I am so thankful that I don t have to wonder about God s love. Why? Beca the Bible tells me so. John 3:16 For God so LOVED the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal LIFE. The Bible also says Dear friends, we should love each other, beca love comes from God. The person who loves has become God s child and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, beca God is love. I John 4:7-8 Day? When people love each other, they like to give each other gifts. The problem with this sometimes is that people think you have to give gifts to show love. But we can show love in different ways. We can say, I love you with words. We can show people we love them by listening to them. Hugs are a great way to tell people we love them. And you don t even have to any words. Helping people is another way to say, I love you. And you know, the best gifts aren t always the ones that cost the most. Think of some ways you can say I love you, beca God loves you! PAGE 3 What gifts will you give on Valentine s Pastor Shirley

6 With Gratitude Got Old, Und, Stinky Shoes? We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. PAGE 6 To Glenwood Youth Carolers: It was such a pleasure to have you here. I felt very honored. The singing was lovely. May God bless each and every one of you. See you at church! Helen Kelly To all the youth (and adults) who sang Christmas carols at our home, a great big thank you! It brought back memories of many years ago singing with the youth at all the homes of the sick and aged. Also, I enjoyed singing with all of you! You really made my day! Florence Davis LOCAL MISSION Your support means the world to us. Thank you for your recent donation of $470. Your gift is already at work helping to shelter and care for homeless families with children in our community. Beca of you, we are able to extend care and mercy to folks in desperate need of safe shelter, basic necessities, and hope. Our clients rely on our services as a stepping stone to a better tomorrow. And we are here, beca of the support of generous and caring friends like you. We appreciate your prayers and your partnership in our mission. Kurt B. Crays EUMA Executive Director Thank you for your continued support of the ministry here at Wesley Woods. We have received your gift of $961.58, toward the Booster Fund. Your prayers and financial support are vital to our continued faithfulness to God and ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Your prayers and donations enable us to provide our guests an experience with Christ both at summer camp and throughout the year. In 2014 Wesley Woods ministered to 700 campers in the summer camping program. Seventy of those campers made first time professions of faith in Jesus Christ. Three hundred fifty of those campers recommitted to their faith in Jesus. God was faithful in enabling us to update our horse pasture fencing, and repair of the Missionary 3 cabin. Your financial gifts helped our staff to handle every one of these opportunities with wisdom, mercy, and grace. Thank you. Nathaniel Greenway Wesley Woods Director GLOBAL Thank you for your support of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The Advance, the designated giving channel of The United Methodist Church, 100 percent of your contribution will go to UMCOR. Thank you for giving so generously. Thank you for joining with us to Be Hope to those who desperately need it. Shawn Bakker UMCOR For the third year, Glenwood is collecting d footwear to benefit the Erie United Methodist Alliance (EUMA) and All God's Children Ministries (AGCM). Footwear in any condition will be accepted. Last year EUMA and AGCM divided over $17,000 between their organizations. Last year, we collected about 1,000 pairs of shoes. This year our goal is 125 pairs! Please tell friends, family, and neighbors that Glenwood will be accepting shoes again this spring. In the US alone, 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year. By donating old shoes to United Methodist Women (UMW) The UMW will meet on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm in the Social Room. The evening's program is "Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Nourishment". Refreshments will be served and all women are welcome to attend! All UMW members who participated in the 2014 reading program are asked to return their reading forms to Helen Hedderick by February 1. The forms are in the church library along with the 2015 reading-program books. And YES, the UMW is having a rummage sale in 2015! The sale is scheduled for Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13. The UMW welcomes your donations of clean, gently-d items. Please no electronic equipment such as computers and televisions, d tires, paints or other chemicals. EUMA and AGCM, what would have gone into landfills will be given a second chance to make a difference. All donated shoes will be redistributed through Funds2orgs and d in developing nations for impoverished people to start and grow an enterprise to feed, clothe, and ho their families. EUMA and AGCM will benefit from a monetary fee based on per pound rate for shoes. Please be sure to rubber band your shoes together and place them in plastic trash bags before bringing them in to church. Collection begins March 1, in the gym. The UMW will begin accepting donations in the ministry center on Tuesday, June 2 and stop accepting donations on Tuesday, June 9. There is no storage area available at Glenwood, so please donate on these dates. Thank you for your support! The proceeds benefit mission programs in Erie and around the world. PAGE 7
