2 TWEAKING OR TRANSFORMATION 2015 Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Jesus didn t come to make bad people good, but dead people alive. [C.S. Lewis] PAGE 2 I love this quote (in the box) and reflect upon it often. It reminds me that there is so much more to the transformation of a person than just changing our outward behavior. Yes, when we come to faith in Jesus, our outward actions should change we should stop doing some things and start doing other things. But the sum total of a transformed life cannot be measured only externally. We must remember that the death and resurrection of Jesus is not like a nip and tuck for your face or tweaking a carburetor so your truck runs better. In this case, we are seeking to improve something already in our possession. But that is not the business that Jesus is in He is about the total transformation of the individual, from the inside to the outside. Paul describes the human spiritual condition of each of us in Ephesians 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. I can fix a lot of things but I cannot fix dead. Our spiritual condition doesn t need tweaking, it needs resurrecting! But if I m dead spiritually, what can I do, you may be asking? Here s the bad news you and I can do nothing to fix this problem. Dead means dead. But there is good news what you and I cannot do, God can do. Because God raised Jesus from the dead, it means that He can raise us from the dead too! God does this work through the Holy Spirit, who is the living presence of God among us. Since we are dead spiritually, it is the Spirit that revives our hearts by the grace of God. We respond in faith to the work of God stirring in us that He has already begun. It is much like the disciples walking to Emmaus on that first Easter day Jesus comes to them but they don t know it s Him and He begins to explain the events of the cross and resurrection to them. When He leaves, their response is Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us? (Luke 24:32). That burning they mention is the work of God in their lives. As we celebrate Pentecost (the birthday of the Church) this month, I am thankful that the Spirit of God is still working in us and through us and among us to draw us closer to Himself. When the Holy Spirit came on that first Pentecost after Jesus, many things happened but the most notable should be that 3,000 people became followers of Jesus that day alone (Acts 2:41)! My prayer for our community, our church, and us in these days is not just for some tinkering or tweaking but for transformation. And as God takes us from death to life, that we might be part of the movement that takes others from the death of sin to life in Jesus also. Jan Hopkins Nellie Huber Dan and Alaina Hunt Brody, Ariana Wes and Laurie Hutchins Alexis George and Shirley Jackson Bruce and Karen Jakiel Martin and Catherine Jaskiewicz, Steven, David Polly Jepson Chad and Andrea Johnson Brantley John and Brenda Johnson Pastor Matt and Allison Judd Anna, Caroline What Can I Give You I have a book entitled 52 Simple Ways to tell your child I Love You. It says to add sparkle and fun to your day-to-day relationship with your child. Let them know how much you care. This month I d like to share a make something together activity. Here are some things to consider: Cooking You chop up one ingredient. Let your child chop another. You make the cake. Let you child make the frosting. Gardening You plant one row. Let your child plant the adjacent row. You pick the tomatoes. Let your child harvest the zucchini. Do a jigsaw puzzle, make a model, color a picture, or tie a quilt. In working together, follow a few simple rules to keep the activity loving. Be willing to accept your child s work. Allow the carrot slices to not be equal. Be willing for glue to ooze out. Choose something that you both think is important or fun. Choose activities that don t have a deadline or tight time frame. Work at a relaxed pace. Don t make this activity an excuse for conversation. Praise your child for the work he does. Good job. Thanks. I like digging potatoes with you. We are all children of God and perhaps you don t have children at home. But maybe you can modify this activity to show someone that they are loved. What can I give you, still small and quite young? A picture I've colored, a song I have sung? Some help with the chores, that might be a good start. But whatever I give, it's with love in my heart!! PAGE 3

4 We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. PAGE 4 With Gratitude I wanted to personally thank you for your Good Samaritan donation. It was such a blessing and a surprise. We needed to refill our propane and your donation covered the majority of that. I cannot thank you enough! God has truly blessed us with a loving community. Please keep us in prayer as the shock and trauma seem to never go away, and it is worse at night. We take one minute at a time. I know the Lord is caring for us. God bless you and keep you safe. Ina Turben Many thanks again for being with us while we need you most. It has been a very difficult 2015 so far and we remain hopeful for things to change soon. Thanks again for the flowers, cards and visits from Pastor Matt and most of all for the many prayers. Praying for good news soon. Bob and Jean Kenny Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to think of us with such a thoughtful gift (college student gift card). We will be sure to use it for something very special. The letter you sent was so personal and we are proud to be part of such a caring church family. I thank God every day that we were led to such a wonderful church and that you have such a nice pastor and great family. Jessica Tolasky & Lauren Alther LOCAL MISSION Your support means the world to us! Thank you for your recent donation of $40 to The Refuge. Your gift is already at work helping to shelter and care for homeless families with children in our community. Because of you, we are able to extend care and mercy to folks in desperate need of safe shelter, basic necessities, and hope. We are here because of the support of generous and caring friends like you. We appreciate your prayers and partnership in our mission. Kurt B. Plans to Crisfield, Maryland that were announced last month have been changed. We are going somewhere, we re just not sure where and when. For now, please let our trip leader, Dave Seib, know if you are interested in being on the team. Church and Community Garden Work Day - 9 from am to Noon Spring has arrived and winter s toll is obvious. Just like at your house, there is much to be done to get the church ready for the sunny days and it takes all of us to make it happen. Weather-permitting, our focus will be outside work raking and mulching the church property and cleaning up around the community garden to get it ready for another planting season. In addition, there will be various other repair jobs that need to be tackled. Please bring the tools we might need to accomplish these tasks. Contact Lois Ross (39-391) if you have questions. is Coins for Missions Month Imagine No Malaria Campaign Malaria is one of the most potent killers on the continent of Africa, striking indiscriminately through the bite of a mosquito. Unlike many other diseases that are awaiting a cure, malaria was eliminated in the U.S. in the 50s. However, in Africa, malaria continues to kill a person every 0 seconds. Malaria is 100% preventable. Imagine No Malaria is part of a global partnership and together with our partners, our generation can beat malaria once and for all. Mark Your Calendar July 9-12 July July For the past several years, the United Methodist Church has been a leader in the fight to end this scourge in Africa. The Church set a 5 million dollar goal and at last count, we were at million raised. We are winding down the campaign with one final push. Bring your coins in as we do our part to make Africa malariafree. Special coin boxes will be available for you to use if you like. If you are willing to serve as a driver, please contact the church office. We plan to work out a rotation schedule for Sunday mornings. We had a glorious evening of food, fellowship and laughter on April as we celebrated our common ministry together and provided special recognitions to some in our church. Roy Himrod shared his gift of music with us by singing several songs that he wrote. We had seventeen different people in the church who were nominated for recognition for modeling the servant attitude of Jesus for us! In the end, we recognized Peggy Seib, Kathy Durst, and Scott Bonnell for their faithful efforts in the church and community as ambassadors of Christ. Doc Salmon was presented with the lifetime achievement award in celebration of his years of service in so many different ways in our church, community, and around the world. A special word of thanks goes to Louisa Salmon and her team (Patty Bonnell, Justine Selan, Gail Fisher, Jim and Carol Thompson, and Roger Brumagin at the dishwasher) for their faithful efforts making this night possible for us. 6 PAGE Summer Worship Time Change The Church Council has approved a change in our worship times for the summer months. From June through August, we will have one (1) worship service, beginning at 9:30am. There will be no Sunday school classes offered (if your class want to keep meeting, you are welcome to find an alternate time to do so). The reasons are multiple: with the usual summer slump in attendance, it gives us a chance to meet together as the whole congregation; it conserves our volunteer resources while still allowing us to offer our best in worship; and it gives a much needed rest to all our Sunday teacher, among others. We ll give it a try this summer and see if we like it before worrying about next year. B.E.S.T. Spring Clean Up - 1 Grab your gardening gloves and roll up your sleeves as we head to our ServErie partner B.E.S.T. (Bayfront East Side Task force) located at 420 Parade Street. Our tasks will include yard work, clearing the area of winter s debris, raking, trash pick up, etc. Please remember to bring tools and supplies to help complete our beautification of this downtown neighborhood. Please contact Tom Butcher at for details. H 2 O Helping Hands Outreach - 9 Our first project is coming up in just a few days! We will be cleaning out the Community Garden to prepare it for spring planting and will likely be finished around 11:00.
