New Life in Christ Church A Communion of the Presbyterian Church in America A SERVICE OF WORSHIP of OUR TRIUNE GOD We welcome those visiting today and rejoice that you chose to worship with us! Please fill out the welcome card on the back of the bulletin. Hymn books are in the foyer.

ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP January 11, 2015 Our whole worship is to fall down before the thrones of the Father and the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to receive the forgiveness of God and to bring sacrifices of praise to the Lamb who was slain. Every time we worship, we should be self-consciously committed to the ministry of John the Baptist: Behold, the Lamb of God! - Michael Horton MEDITATION Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him. He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young. - Isaiah 40:10-11 GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CHORAL CALL to WORSHIP A Jubilant Psalm HYMN #172 Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder PRAYER of INVOCATION SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Our Confession of Sin is by faith in the God who perfectly accepts us in the righteousness of Christ alone. As we confess, we acknowledge our life is from Christ and not from ourselves. As Christians we live by faith alone. We always need Christ not just at the beginning of our Christian life but always. (Romans 1:17) Sing Praise To the Lord (Psalm 30) And Can It Be CONFESSION (See insert or on screen) (Based upon the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:13-7:27) **This is a time for contrition before the Lord. It is a time for self-examination. As we read it together, ask how this prayer applies to your life. The goal is to identify your sins, to express your sins, and to feel the weight of your sin. SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Taste and See Jesus Messiah

ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP DEACONS MINUTE TESTIMONY CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER OFFERING DOXOLOGY GREETING Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Stan & Eileen Roberts (Children 3-4 years old may leave for Children s Church - room 134) The Lord s Prayer Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. - Mathew 6:9-13 SPECIAL MUSIC Jesus Loves Me - Jonathan Allison SCRIPTURE Matthew 7:13-20 SERMON HYMN Two Ways of Ministry, Different Results Pastor Douglas Kittredge #521 My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less The Word of God exhibits the character of our God, faithfulness, truth, omniscience, and wisdom. When the Word of God is near, God Himself is with us. (Romans 10:6-8) BENEDICTION Pastor Sean Whitenack

NOTES Lord s Day January 11, 2014 Two Ways of Ministry, Different Results Matthew 7:13-20 The Biblical truth most ignored today is the teaching about man s sinful nature and thus the desperate need each person has for a Savior in Jesus Christ. Jesus says in Matthew 7:11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Jesus acknowledges that we are evil. You do not need to be a terrorist or a mass murderer to be evil. I. Two Ways Matthew 7:13-14 A. Both give hope of life 1. The easy way is broad and accommodates everyone 2. The easy way ignores God s teaching about our lazy evil heart and the threat of an eternal hell Jeremiah 17:9 3. The universality of sin Ecclesiastes 9:3, Romans 3:10-18, 23 B. The wages of sin is eternal death Romans 6:23 1. There are not many ways to God John 14:6 2. All other religions tell you what you can do to be right with God, but God s way tells us what God has done for us Romans 5:8 The broad road permits people to live as they choose. The narrow road calls us to sorrow over our sin Matthew 5:3 and death to self Matthew 16:24-25 The broad road holds out signs that say freedom and fun but the end result is on the back of those same signs is written sorrow and death eternally. II. Beware Matthew 7:15-18 A. The danger is not primarily from 1. Atheists 2. Secular leaders 3. Cult leaders B. The danger is from those presenting themselves as reliable evangelical Christians Matthew 7:15 1. They seem like angels of light 2 Corinthians 11: What motivates the false prophet or pastors are their desire. Ravenous wolves Matthew 7:15 3. Paul warns the Ephesian church Acts 20:28-30 Drawing the disciples after themselves 4. Such false prophets are HERETICS - Titus 3:9-11 and HIRELINGS - John 10: Peter also warns 2 Peter 2:1-3 III. Examine the Character (spiritual fruit) A. Fruit is character Galatians 5: Abide in Christ John 15:4,5 2. Faithfulness in confidence in the reliability and authority of God s inerrant Word - Compare Billy Graham and Chuck Templeton 3. Humbly applying the Word of God by serving John 10:11 and Isaiah 40:11 Preach the gospel and be forgotten John 3:30 Examples to me of Charles Schauffele and Cornelius Van Til ministering in the nursing homes James 1:27

B. Shepherds after God s own heart Jeremiah 3:15 1. The hirelings scatter the sheep Ezekiel 34:2-10, Jeremiah 23: The pastor after God s heart seeks for the broken and the sick Ezekiel 34:16 3. The pastor after God s heart cause my people to hear my words and turn from their evil way Jeremiah 23:22 Jesus died to redeem us from our sins and redeem us as His own special people, zealous for good works! 7 Prayer and Praise We celebrate the gift of life God gives us on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Yet, we grieve over the helpless and innocent babies that are offerings to the spirit of the age. We know that someday the ones who seemed to die for nothing will stand beside the Ancient of Days with joy and will see the infant from a manger come and crush the spirit of the age. Praise God for the freedom of religion we experience in the U.S.A. A celebration of the Freedom of Religion act will be held at this afternoon at the monument on Washington Ave. at 2:00 pm. Pray for Grace Whitenack as she reads her paper on Religious Liberty at 2:30 at the downtown public library. Praise God for those graduating from New Geneva Theological Seminary. Next Sunday we will have a graduation service at 6 PM for Christine Fulcrod, Jeremy Greenberg, Ward Skip Tyler (Masters in Christian Ministry), Bob Rumbaugh (M.Div.), and Mary Ferrell (Certificate in Biblical Studies). Praise God for Kihyun Lee, the son of Pastor Sung and Eunja Lee, who will be married on February 7th to Seungwon Yoon in Vienna, VA Pray for Kathi Carlson who was hospitalized this week and is anticipating surgery next week. Pray for the Arts ministries at New Life in Christ Church. The Festival of the Arts is February 6-7. See Jonathan or Veronica Allison to participate. Praise God for the Lord s faithful provision for our budget over the past few weeks. Pray for our college students as they return to campus after the Christmas break. Announcements and Events Understanding and Answering Islam: What do Muslims believe? Do you know what it costs a Muslim to consider Christ?
