New Life in Christ Church A Communion of the Presbyterian Church in America A SERVICE OF WORSHIP of OUR TRIUNE GOD We welcome those visiting today and rejoice that you chose to worship with us! Please fill out the welcome card on the back of the bulletin. Hymn books are in the foyer.
ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP November 30, 2014 MEDITATION Christian worship is all about God. He is the object of our worship, the focus of our worship. We gather as a congregation, not to seek an experience but to meet with God and give Him praise. - J. Ligon Duncan The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. - Psalm 27:1 and 4 GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CHORAL CALL to WORSHIP Come and Be Joyful - Adult & Youth Choirs HYMN #196 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus PRAYER of INVOCATION The celebration of Advent begins the 4th Sunday before Christmas day. It is a time that focuses our attention on Jesus Christ s first coming as well as His second coming when He will redeem all of creation. Advent means coming or arrival. We reflect on the first coming and look forward to Christ s return. May the Lord richly bless you in this Advent Season. ADVENT READING - Hope RESPONSIVE READING (on screen) The Lord God of Israel said, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. A voice of one calling in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Ethridge Family Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; The rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. The sovereign Lord comes with power, and His arm rules for Him.
ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP The Lord s Prayer RESPONSIVE READING continued (on screen) His reward is with Him, and His recompense accompanies Him. He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. - Malachi 3:1a; Isaiah 40:3-5, 10-11a SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Of the Father s Love Begotten O Little Town of Bethlehem As With Gladness Men of Old CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER OFFERING O Come, All Ye Faithful (208) - Adam Allison DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. - Mathew 6:9-13 GREETING (Children 3-4 years old may leave for Children s Church - room 134) SPECIAL MUSIC Prophets Knew - Girls Choir SCRIPTURE Matthew 6:1-15 SERMON HYMN Life In His Presence Pastor Douglas Kittredge #214 Angels We Have Heard On High God's happiness consists in enjoying and rejoicing in Himself; and so does also the creature's happiness. It is a participation of what is in God; and God and His glory are the objective ground of it. The happiness of the creature consists in rejoicing in God; by which also God is magnified and exalted. Joy, or the exulting of the heart in God's glory, is one thing that belongs to praise. BENEDICTION
NOTES Lord s Day November 30, 2014 Life in the Father s Presence Matthew 6:1-15 Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount confronts our natural inclination to living a selfcentered life. Part of living a self-centered life is to seek the honor of others. Jesus examines our motives when He asks: How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? (John 5:44). I. The Deceit of Self-Righteousness Matthew 6:1-4 A. Be on guard 1. The danger of seeking to impress others by your spiritual deeds which seemingly honor God 2. Your record does not impress God Matthew 6: Do not deceive yourself about your self-righteousness B. Do your deeds in secret 1. The Fathers sees in secret 2. He rewards openly II. The Hypocrisy of Self-Centered Prayer Matthew 6:5-8 A. Everybody prays 1. Not if you pray 2. But when you pray 3. Such prayer is not to know God but to be seen by men and to make an effect upon others B. Pray in secret 1. Sin even follows us into the presence of God 2. We pray for God to change us 3. We come humbly before God not to impress God or anyone else but to enjoy Him Psalm 27:4 C. The evidence of selfishness in prayer 1. Vain repetitions Matthew 6:7 2. Such prayer questions the goodness of God Matthew 6:8 III. Prayer in God s Presence Matthew 6:9-13 A. Our Father in heaven 1. Only Christians recognize that they have a Father in heaven Romans 8: The Lord is high and lifted up in the Temple Isaiah 6: The first thing is not that those around us come to know Christ, or the peace of the world but quieting your soul before your Holy Father in heaven B. Your petitions Matthew 6:10 1. The new birth introduces us into the kingdom John 3:3 2. Your kingdom come resting on Jesus as Christ and Son of God came to redeem sinners Matthew 16: Your will be done Matthew 6:10
C. We petitions Matthew 6: Ask for our daily needs food, clothing, Matthew 6:8; 6: Forgive our debts we are all sinners in need of a Savior 3. By your forgiveness teach us to forgive it does not come naturally, we need a new nature in order to forgive 4. Deliver us from what tempts us James 1:14 Deliver us from ourselves and from the evil one Yours is the Kingdom the place to do your deeds secretly before the Lord is in His church His kingdom. Christ loves and is committed to building His kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19). You may not be recognized by people but God will reward you openly. He desires to bless you in this life and the next!! Next Sunday we will Celebrate the Lord s Supper at our morning worship services. Pray this week that the Lord will prepare our hearts for Communion.
