2 ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP October 16, 2016 Men will never worship God with a sincere heart, or be roused to fear and obey Him with sufficient zeal, until they properly understand how much they are indebted to His mercy. - John Calvin MEDITATION For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones. - Isaiah 57:15 GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL to WORSHIP It is a dangerous thing to charge ourselves openly before the world with the aim of reorganizing states and reconstructing society. Missions are powerful because they ignore the force of society and deal with its heart. -Billy Graham HYMN PRAYER of INVOCATION SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Come Praise and Glorify Your Name #75 O Father, You Are Sovereign Justification by Faith does not mean salvation by believing things instead of by doing right. It means pleading the merits of Christ before the throne of grace instead of our own merits. - B.B. Warfield CONFESSION of SIN (on screen) Father, I have sinned against You. I ve neglected the discipline I need for spiritual growth. I ve been irritable and impatient toward people around me. I ve allowed resentful and unkind thoughts to lodge in my mind. I repent of these sins and claim Your forgiveness. You have said You justify the wicked (Romans 4:5). Father, in view of my sins today, I acknowledge that I am wicked. Not only have I committed sins, but my heart is sinful. My sins are merely the expression of my sinful heart. SILENT CONFESSION of SIN
3 ASSURANCE of PARDON Despite my sins and my sinfulness, You have said, There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). How can I not be condemned for I have sinned against You? Father, I know I am forgiven only because Jesus bore my sins in His body on the cross. You accept me through Christ s righteousness so I might experience blessings He deserved. In Jesus, Amen SONGS of PRAISE and WORSHIP (on screen) Man of Sorrows We Have Been Healed CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER OFFERING DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. GREETING (Children 3-4 years old may leave for Children s Church - room 134) SPECIAL MUSIC The Holy Heart - Men s Ensemble SCRIPTURE Jeremiah 8:4-17 SERMON HYMN Why No Repentance Pastor Doug Kittredge #497 I Need Thee, Precious Jesus The Lord s Prayer Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. - Matthew 6:9-13 The Great God values not the service of men, if the heart is not in it: The Lord sees and judges the heart; he has no regard to outward forms of worship, if there be no inward adoration, if no devout affection be employed therein. It is therefore a matter of infinite importance, to have the whole heart engaged steadfastly for God. - Isaac Watts BENEDICTION Pastor Sean Whitenack
4 NOTES Lord s Day October 16, 2016 Why No Repentance Jeremiah 8:4-17 If a baby learning to walk falls down, the baby is encouraged to get up and try again. If someone falls, he gets up and goes on often with greater determination. The Lord, through Jeremiah, asks Israel, will you fall and not get up? (Jeremiah 8:4). I. Why Perpetual Blacksliding? Jeremiah 8:5-7 A. They cling to deceit 1. Truth has perished Jeremiah 7:28 2. People manipulate others with flattery Psalm 12:1-4 B. No one repents Jeremiah 8:6 1. No one examines himself but justifies themselves 2. Like a warhorse rushes into battle so they go headlong into sin not caring about the consequences Job 39: Knowing the righteous judgment of God, they practice sin knowing they deserve eternal judgment Romans 1: There is an eternal judgment to come Jeremiah 8:7; 2 Corinthians 5:10 5. Those outside of Christ will have to pay all that is due to an eternal God Matthew 18:34 II. False Hope Jeremiah 8:8-12 A. Boast in Christian heritage Jeremiah 8:8 1. Yet question the relevance of God s law today 2. By asserting that some of God s commands were based on culture not God s character Jeremiah 8:9 3. Motivation is covetousness Jeremiah 8:10 B. Peace, peace when there is no peace Jeremiah 8: Instead of cleansing one s conscience to be accepted by God through Christ s atonement Isaiah 53:10-11; Ephesians 2: Today the objective of faith in Christ is self-acceptance, self-esteem, loving oneself not God s acceptance through Christ s righteousness III. Temporal Judgment Jeremiah 8:13-17 A. Economic problems Jeremiah 8:13 1. God curses our blessings Malachi 2: Many come to the U.S. for prosperity not because they are committed to the values that made America a place of freedom of conscience 3. Peace treaties bring no peace Jeremiah 8:14-15 B. God sends snakes Jeremiah 8:17 1. Yet He also sends a cure Numbers 21: Christ cures spiritual snake bites John 3:14-17 Hope for our future as a nation is in repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ!!
