Dr. Sunny Ahn The Season of Annual Conference in the United Methodist Church (UMC) is about saying goodbyes and hellos under the itinerant system of the UMC. The goodbyes are always hard regardless how ready we are or not. On the other hand, hellos excite us with the fear of uncertainty. All of our goodbyes are sweet sorrow while all of our hellos are a new song that need little tune-ups. This has been especially true to the people of Kona UMC this year. On Sunday, June 10, the letter from the Hawaii District Office written by the Hawaii District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. SeHee Han was read by Kim Davison and Tavite Talasinga on behalf of Staff-Parish Relations Committee. It was about Rev. Malakai Tatafu s appointment to First Tongan UMC on the Oahu Island of Hawaii, effective July 1. Pastor Malakai has been with the people of Kona for 12 years. We were happy for him to become a senior pastor of that church, and yet sad that we need to say goodbye to him and his family. (cont. on page 2)

2 July-August (cont. from page 1, FROG) Likewise, we received another letter from the Hawaii District Office and read in church on Sunday, June 17. It was about Bishop Grant Hagiya s intention to appoint the Pastor Vaokotone (Tony) Teaupa as our Associate Pastor effective July 1, He is coming to us from Ewa Beach United Methodist Church on the Oahu Island of Hawaii. He has a deep interest and love for scripture and theology and seeks to connect it to everyday life. He values team ministry and his gift and skills are in teaching the Word of God, pastoral care, and small group ministries. One of the Methodist terms we use here is Appointment. The term appointment in the UMC is applied to the place or position to which the ordained minister has been assigned by the bishop. The clergy deployment system for the UMC is referred to as the itinerant system. Under this system ordained ministers are appointed or sent by the bishop to their assignments each year, usually from July 1 to June 30 of the following year, though the bishop may move any itinerant pastor at any time. The pastor who is staying at one church or the same ministry context more than a year means that the pastor has been re-appointed to the same ministry place each year. Rev. Malakai Tatafu has been with Kona UMC for 12 years. This means he has been re-appointed to Kona UMC for 11 times. The appointment in the itinerant system of the UMC is the unique obligation or duty or privilege of all ministers to uphold according to 329 of the Book of Discipline of the UMC. Let us welcome our new Associate Pastor, Rev. Vaokotone (Tony) Teaupa and his family while blessing Rev. Malakai Tatafu and his family on their new journey with First Tongan UMC. 3 July-August FORGING THE FUTURE: CREATING A PATHWAY OF DISCIPLESHIP In August 2016, we began the process of building a five-year strategic plan. We began the process with a Prayer Sermon Series encouraging the church to be in prayer to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit for capturing the vision of God for us. We conducted the congregational survey and had a vision retreat with the survey results to identify goals to build our future. The theme for the vision process of the year was Remember the Past, Celebrate the Present, and Envision the Future. We sharpened the mission/vision statement of the church while naming the core value and defining the ministry context and ministry philosophy CLay Leadership with openness. To guide us into the future, we grouped the ministries into three: the ministries of Welcoming, Nurturing, and Celebration. With this foundation, we created the 2017 vison theme- Transforming Vision into Reality- The Year of Implementation. To meet the mission of the church, we targeted three areas of the ministry- outreach, capital (plant, property, and equipment) improvement, and leadership development. We reshaped the ministry infrastructure of the church accordingly. Our 2018 vision theme is Transforming Vision into Reality The Year of Implementation. The goals driving our 2018 action plan capitalized on the strengths and weaknesses identified through the congregation survey. We created direction and challenges for growth in three areas: 1) Hospitality The nature of the people (friendly, caring, involved). What should we do in 2018 to strengthen this identity and help fulfill our mission? 2) Cultural Competence- Bonding together as a single Church. What action should we take to overcome some of the internal differences among our Church family? 3) Ministry with Young People- Sustaining our mission, we need to attract young adults and their young families. What actions do we need to take to increase our young membership? Our journey of growth and spirit continues. In July, the congregation and guests will be asked to complete a survey, like the surveys we have used to guide the vision process. This survey, in conjunction with the prior surveys results, and the results of our actions these past three years will help us build a collective body of information about how the congregation sees the progress in transforming vision into reality. The information from the surveys will help provide insight from the congregation and guests about how well we are doing on (cont. on page 4)

4 July-August (cont. from page 3, VISION) our journey to making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The results will be summarized and shared as part of the August Vision Retreat as we set new goals for 2019, moving forward in growth and spirit. Vision Retreat Summary 2016 for 2017 Remember the Past, Celebrate the Present, and Envision the Future 2017 for 2018 Transforming Vision into Reality- The Year of Implementation 2018 for 2019 Forging the Future for KUMC- Creating a Pathway of Discipleship The action goals established in 2016 for 2017 were: Create an outreach sub-committee to identify needs not being met through existing resources and identify how we may be able to meet those needs. Establish an inventory to identify church members fields of expertise that can be drawn on to help meet the needs of the church. Create a complete compendium (resource guide) that identifies all church outreach ministries and services, including those in which we provide direct individual involvement, leadership, and/or financial support. Create a short-term plant (facilities), property, and equipment needs and improvements plan. Prepare a long-range capital investment and improvement plan. Develop a structure for a capital/ planned giving campaign and financial development committee. Assess the CLay Leadership Team structure and recommend changes for its successes. Review the performance and structure of the triad (worship, outreach, living the gospel) volunteer leadership model. The action goals established in 2017 for 2018 were: Strengthen our identity as a friendly, caring, involved church to help fulfill our mission (Hospitality). Create opportunities for the three cultural ministries to work and participate in fellowship together beyond Sunday church services (Cultural Competence). Increase the number of young families and youth to help ensure the future growth of Kona United Methodist Church (Ministry with Young People). The action goals for 2019 will be developed as part of the Vision Retreat on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from10:00 am to 1:00 pm at KUMC. 5 July-August Forging the Future for KUMC In preparation for our third vision retreat, we once again are asking the congregation to participate in a survey. This survey has similar questions to the ones the congregation previously completed. The responses from this survey will be used in conjunction with the responses from the previous surveys to help build a historical body of information about how the congregation sees KUMC s progress of forging the future for KUMC. Our vision for the success of KUMC and our efforts to accomplish our mission- making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world - rest in the hands of our congregation which includes all of our members, guests, and visitors. You are a vital part of that success. Please complete the following questionnaire with as much detail as you would like to include. It is not necessary to sign the questionnaire, all members, guests, and visitors comments and contributions are welcome. Leave the questionnaire in the designated drop box. All responses will be aggregated and reported as part of the vision retreat on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 10am-1pm. If you are a visitor, please check here before completing the survey. 7 July-August Holy Land Trip: Journey through the Bible with the People of Kona UMC will be a 16-Day trip including Cairo and the Route of the Exodus Extension Trip leaving from San Francisco on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 and arriving in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, March 13, We will return to USA on Wednesday, March 27, The educational theme for this trip is Jesus: His life, His times, His land, His Hebrew faith. 8 July-August Outreach welcoming ministry T-shirt Sale Fundraiser T-shirts have been made with the new church logo to raise funds for the church. The cost: $15/Tshirt (S, M, L) and $20/ Tshirt (XL+). The Leadership Team of Kona United Methodist Church (KUMC) would like to form a Taskforce Team to prepare for KUMC s 30 th birthday next year. Please let Pastor Sunny know if you are interested in joining the team. Change for Cause is a coin-a-thon fundraiser. It is about raising extra kokua funds for helping the needy within the church and the surrounding community. A coin container to save your loose change is located at the Greeting Table each Sunday. The Outreach Ministry of our Tongan & Samoan Language Ministries feeds the homeless at the homeless shelter on the third Tuesday of the month at 12noon. Please speak to Pastor Tony or Navy Mareko. TOTAL 365 $1,094 The need for non-perishable food and cash donations has risen dramatically with the eruption in Puna. The Kona Food Basket has had to supply more food for the people in shelters. There has also been more demand in Kona because people are moving over here to live with friend and family or on the beach. 10 July-August Living the gospel nurturing ministry OVERVIEW OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PROGRAMS For Keiki Keiki in elementary school meet on Sunday mornings to talk about Bible stories, do puzzles, games and crafts. For the month of July the keiki are reading parables : The 2 Houses, the 2 Debtors, the Mustard Seed and yeast, the Pharisee and the tax collector, and the 10 talents. In August they will look at the stories about the man in synagogue, Mary and Martha, the woman at the well, and the man by the pond. Believe me, the children get into it. Our Keiki teachers have been doing this for many years and are conscientious and skilled.

11 July-August Living the gospel nurturing ministry Fellowship: Youth Camp (July 16-18) is open to all students who will be in Intermediate or High School next school season and those who recently graduated. Registration forms will be on the sign up table and from Kathleen Jaeger. We are also looking for adults who will camp with us to provide supervision, help the youth cook meals, and work alongside the campers to make Camp Mekokiko beautiful. This is very civilized camping with inside plumbing, real beds or cots, unless you bring your own tent, then you can camp that way. See Kathleen Jaeger to volunteer. You will experience three days of good memories and fun. End of Summer/Beginning of school Party TBA Sunday Class: Following our curriculum materials, Bible Lessons for Youth, we are studying Faith. In July we will continue looking into the threats and struggles of the early church as they attempted to follow Jesus. In August we will examine the stories of Daniel and his companions as they try to live out their faith in a hostile and foreign land. They succeed through obedience to God s will and remembering God is always with them. The Youth class is pleased with the new cabinetry installed in the classroom. 12 July-August Living the gospel nurturing ministry Every year Kona United Methodist church (KUMC) assists the Ulu Wini Ministries with their backpack drive for the children living in their apartment complex. Both KUMC and Ulu Wini ministries believe in treating all people with dignity, compassion and spiritual excellence. This year the need is for 124 backpacks filled with school supplies. There are 60 children in kindergarten through 5 th grade, 30 children 6 th through 8 th grade and 34 youth in grades 9 through 12. All children need 1 binders, dividers, Kleenex, paper towels, and sanitizers. Middle school children need 3 prong folders, 3 ring binders, composition tablets, pocket folders, colored pencils, glue sticks, highlighters, pencils, index cards, binder, paper, and a handheld sharpener, and erasers. The youth need the same and also sheet holders, calculators, note pads, pens, rulers and more. Collections formally started on June 24 th, and the last day for collecting backpacks and supplies is July 22 nd.

13 July-August Living the gospel nurturing ministry Wednesday Afternoon Adult Study 3:30pm-4:30pm, starting September Wednesday Afternoon Adult Study Group will take on a new book, Unafraid: Living With Courage in Uncertain Times, by Adam Hamilton starting September. Unafraid deals with the complications that fear, anxiety and worry infiltrate our lives holding us back from fulfillment and joy. Thursday Afternoon Adult Study Trinity Bible Studies 3:30pm-4:30pm, starting September Trinity Bible Studies is a curriculum developed by the office of the Discipleship Ministries of the United Methodist Church. The overall purpose of the study is to know the facts of the Bible and its meaning, and then apply to life wherever we are now. The Fact-Meaning- Application is the desired process of the study. The scope of the study is from Genesis to Revelation divided into two sections: The Old Testament and the New Testament. We get a rough draft of the curriculum and edit/modify it as it fits us based on the praxis of Grace Theology in Kona, Hawaii. All are invited to join the study. Please speak to Pastor Sunny. Why Did Jesus Speak in Parables By Teri King Nurturing Ministry Lay Leader When I was talking with a stranger about the Bible, we landed on the question of why Jesus spoke in parables and talked about Matthew 13:13. (Jesus said) Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. In the chapter where Jesus said this, further explanations were 1) they [disciples], but not others were given the right/responsibility to know, and 2) whoever finds understanding, more will be given. Jesus also explained that people in general had come to having dull hearts neither seeing rightly, nor hearing rightly, nor understanding rightly. As the stranger and I talked, we came to an agreement that understanding God and other deep issues of life was never an easy thing. Rather, humans need to search and reach to God for answers. When we reach out to God in prayer, God does not fail us, though sometimes the answers are slow in coming. And often the searching reveals surprises that we were not looking for. The Lord wants us to understand as much as we are able. We who believe in the Messiah are meant to find all the answers that will bring healing and purifying to our souls, so that we can live a life that will draw others to know the spiritual blessings that will come in having a deep soul relationship with God. There truly are no joys that compare to the joy of being the recipient of God s love. What do you think?

17 July-August WORSHIP CELEBRATION ministry Anointing with Oil Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:13-14 NRSV) We are continually being blessed and feel privileged to anoint & pray healing for the sick. After Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month, the congregation is invited to stop by the prayer stations & receive prayer. Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) would like to inform the congregation about the relationship change of our English Choir Director, Bernaldo Evangelista, to the church. His working relationship with Kona United Methodist Church (KUMC) will be changed from a paid-staff to an independent contractor as of August 31, This change will benefit Bernaldo with the freedom to accept other job opportunities, yet remain active in the KUMC congregation. During this transition, Dick Shields will act as volunteer English Choir Director, starting in August.
