CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME This is not a phrase I generally favour, and it seems all the more inappropriate when there are so many places of dire need in our world - Iraq, Syria, Gaza, South Sudan and all the others which have slipped from our consciousness. It's a phrase usually intended to distance the speaker from all those other needy people in far away countries; it often carries more than a hint of racism, and certainly a it's very long way from the attitude of the Good Samaritan. But the phrase is redeemed if we think not of 'charity' in the sense of supporting good causes, but in its older meaning, the meaning it has in the Authorised Version when we read about 'faith, hope and charity' - words which are rendered in our modern bibles as 'faith, hope, and love'. If we cannot live lovingly among our immediate neighbours, then showing love in our dealings with those further afield becomes even more of a challenge. Viewed like this, the phrase might prompt us to think about what it is in our own neighbourhood and community which demands our care, our generosity, our loving-kindness. Preparing for our Parish Day, on 20 September, I have been feeding a weekly question into our notice sheet: I'm sure you have all given them careful thought. One was 'what human need do you think most needs addressing in Wickford and Runwell?' We are a relatively comfortable community: there are few obvious signs of deprivation in the place and its people, though some have been surprised and even shocked to find that there is demand for a food bank here. So the question challenges us to look a little deeper.

What are the levels of unemployment? Do people feel isolated or lonely? Does our culture of desiring and having so much draw people into financial problems - and what does it do to us morally and spiritually? What care is offered to the vulnerable and the confused, those who suffer from illness of either mind or body? How are we good neighbours to those with disabilities? That's by no means an exhaustive list, of course. Perhaps the first step to answering the question is to pay real attention to the people and the place. I find it all too easy to go about my regular routine absorbed in my own thoughts and concerns and without really noticing what is going on around me; in the weeks between writing this and sharing with as many of you as possible in our Parish Day discussions, I will try very hard to watch, listen, and observe - and hope that others will do the same, and bring their thoughts to the day. Jane Wickford and Runwell Team Ministry Supporting Basildon Women s Refuge Items needed in September are; Items for Harvest Festival Due to lack of space; Please only take items to St. Andrew s Church on the last FRIDAY (or as near as possible) of each month; then they can be taken to the refuge. If you are unable to take our offering to St. Andrew s then please do pass it to one of your Church Wardens or your Priest. Thank-you

Men s Fellowship Group On Saturday 26 th July, the men s fellowship group welcomed the Rt. Revd. Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford. He arrived in good time to enjoy a welcome cup of tea and chat before sitting down to a full English breakfast cooked by our very own Phil Mann and his helpers. I found out later he even tweeted about our breakfast. to St. Barnabas Church, Hadleigh. Once breakfast was over and cleared away Bishop Stephen talked to us about how he became a Christian at 13 years old growing up in Leigh-on-sea and going He told us how this changed his life and that of his family. He captivated us all as he talked us through his story. At the end we had a question and answer session and Bishop Stephen answered a vast array of our questions ranging from the recent vote on women Bishops to helping out on the TV series Rev to his books as an author. The most interesting questions came about his time in the House of Lords and what that means to him. He left us about 10:45 to return home and work on his latest book which should be out in time for Christmas. Our group has grown steadily in number since we had our first meeting back in September 2013 and the speakers have varied in type and style. We have had talks about archaeological digs of the old testament to life as a fireman and Chaplain to the fire service.

We have had strangers come and talk to us, as well as some home grown speakers. We also have speakers lined up for the next few months and we are already booking people for We meet for breakfast on the last Saturday of the month at 8:30am in St Catherine s Hall and the group is open to any men in our community and if you would like more information please contact Steve Lissenden or a member of the clergy. Our next two speakers will be George Morl (30 th August) and The Very Revd Nicholas Henshall, Dean of Chelmsford Cathedral (27 th September). CELEBRATING 68 YEARS Joe and Irene Marston, cutting a cake at St Andrew's, to mark their 68th wedding anniversary. Our warmest congratulations to them both.

WICKFORD & RUNWELL MOTHERS UNION On the 2 nd July 2014 many Mothers Union members and friends went to The Roslin Hotel Thorpe Bay for afternoon tea, instead of our usual meeting with a speaker. Everyone commented What an enjoyable tea! and What a conversational afternoon it was! 9 ST ANDREW'S CENTRE REFURBISHED Many readers will already have seen and used the bright, light, refurbished St Andrew's Centre. The original wooden floor has been beautifully sanded and resurfaced, white walls give a great sense of space, and smart and comfortable new chairs and tables complete the 'look'. And you really can 'smell the coffee' at our coffee mornings now. Thanks go to the development group who worked hard to bring all of this into being. 10 Farewell to Pauline All at St. Andrews were distressed to hear of the recent death of Pauline Warne who passed away at Ghyllgrove Nursing Home in August after several years of illness. Pauline was a person who impressed every person she met and was loved by all. She was a devoted member of our church and worked continuously for the benefit of all. I personally was attracted to St. Andrews by this wonderful example of Christian love and joy. She was a church warden for many years, years of change and development as St. Andrews struggled with a decreasing congregation to deal with the problems promoted by this limitation of resources in terms of people and finance. She was full of ideas and not afraid to help in their introduction. She did everything with a smile on her face and very often a big laugh to go with it. To her the glass was always half full.

Outside of Church Pauline was an extremely knowledgeable and skilful cook and spent many happy hours feeding guests both privately and on a more formal basis, to everyone s enjoyment. As her sight began to fail, Pauline became an even more avid reader than she already was. The talking books were a wonderful resource and helped to keep her interest in the world around. In fact she never gave up in spite of increasing ill health; local visits to beautiful gardens took the place of longer trips and Hyde Hall became a regular haven where she and Reg could enjoy peace and tranquillity. She and Reg both loved to walk and were vital members of our church walking group. With Pauline you could never get lost. She was a human SATNAV and more. She not only knew where we were going but she knew almost every detail of our route, every feature and what was round the next corner. We know she won t have got lost on this last journey, she prepared the way and she knew the destination. Farewell Pauline. We will all miss you dearly. Michael and Margaret Maguire Frank Cardnell Words cannot express how much I and my family were helped by the love and support of the members of our three Churches after the death of my dear Husband, Frank, Thank you for the cards, flowers and donations, but most of all for your prayer. God bless you all, Jeannette Sandra,Dawn, Mark and Kath

PARISH DAY - 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 Once again, we will be inviting EVERYONE from our three churches to come together for a day of learning and exploration, of shared thought, laughter (and food), and of worship. A day to build up our relationships, challenge our different ways of thinking, and even dream a few dreams. This year we will take as our focus the question 'what is the church for?' We won't be the first to ask the question, and we'll tap into other people's expertise, and particularly the 'Five Marks of Mission', identified by Anglican churches from around the world some 30 years ago as a summary of what they were and are about. The Five Marks are To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom To teach, baptise and nurture new believers To respond to human need by loving service To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth Jane

who s talking at St Paul's Forum public events? St Paul's Cathedral has an amazing education programme throughout the year, including workshops, retreat days, courses, or public conversations. Their Sunday lunchtime forums begin on September 7 th these include finding God outdoors and What is Faith? They also hold prayer workshops and reflective days as well as an advent course. Starting in the autumn they have a new series How to read the bible. And in Advent you might be interested in - Walking Backwards to Christmas Stephen Cottrell Sunday 7 December pm Can we ever encounter Christmas as if for the first time? Stephen Cottrell tells the story backwards and includes people we don t usually hear from at Christmas the prophets Moses and Anna, the Innkeeper s wife, Rachel who weeps for her children, as well as the more familiar voices of Isaiah, the shepherds, the wise men, Joseph and Mary. Often told as a story of unalloyed light, this mixture gives us a more nuanced Christmas story, illuminating its uncertainties and even horrors as well as its joys. Bishop Stephen's new Advent book, Walking Backwards to Christmas, is published this year. You can book events you want to attend online. or go directly to eventbrite page. I do have a full programme if you would like to learn more about the events. Carol Drummond

CHRISTIAN AID "thank you and please" First of all, the good news! This year s Christian Aid Week collections were a considerable improvement on last year s with a total of from our parish. Thank you and well done to all who contributed in any way. Sadly, though, the real need for the work of Christian Aid is highlighted in this letter which I received recently: As a church which has donated to us, we wanted to ask for your help. You may have seen recently in the news that the situation in Iraq is deteriorating and the desperate need that has been developing there over the last couple of weeks. There are atrocious stories from those who have survived about what they have seen, and those they have had to leave behind. We are one of just a handful of aid agencies already working in Iraq. Our partners are risking their lives daily to provide food, hygiene kits and clothing for those who have fled from their homes. There are Emergency Appeal envelopes in church, or you can donate online at May we do all we can to support those who give so much in order to help others. Richard Feldwick

Jonah Explored An exploration of the amazing four chapter book of the Bible! Wednesday 15th October Wednesday 22nd October and Wednesday 29th October 8 pm at St Andrew's Church Centre All you need is an open mind, an excited heart and a desire to plumb the depths in the belly of a fish (although the latter is optional)

A HARRY SKEGGS Cartoon! Harry was, for a long time, the verger at St Catherine's Church but now receives Communion at home. He has, for many years, crafted carefully drawn and coloured (such a shame the Magazine is not printed in colour!) cartoons. Thank you to Harry for this latest gem! The caption reads: "Well, we don't need to keep up with the Jones any more. They've got seven years for fraud" (Please note that this is not a reference to Alan Jones or anyone connected to that fine Welsh name but rather a generic name associated with the phrase "Keeping Up with the Jones")

St Mary's CASINO NIGHT! It's that time again..... October 18th at the Village Hall An opportunity for crazy gambling and extortionate(?) laughter (in a safe money free environment) Tickets available.... soon!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Several years ago we started A Meal on Sunday once a quarter in St.Catherine s Hall.We found there were many people in the Parish who live alone and find Sundays can be very difficult and lonely, so why not try and get them together for a meal. This has proved very popular when up to thirty people sit down together to enjoy fellowship and food. We have four teams of 3/4 volunteers who organise these meals on a rota system, so it means they only get called on once a year. Sadly through ill health we are one team short. Is there anyone who would be willing to get a team together so we can carry on this work of outreach to the lonely. You would find it very rewarding. People from our three churches come along plus others from the wider community. PLEASE give this serious thought, to find out more please ring THANK YOU. Cleaner - required once a fortnight for a couple of hours to work in family home doing all kinds of housekeeping.
