Copying the old song, the next line would be 'Then mend it, dear Jane...' If only it was that easy! Many, if not most of you will know by now that we have a major problem with dry rot in the St Andrew's Centre which has left us with a hole in the kitchen floor. It is something which needs to be tackled as a matter of urgency, to prevent the rot spreading further. We have been in touch with our insurers, as it may be the result of a water leak, but as yet we don't know whether we will be able to make a claim. If we can, that will relieve us of a major financial headache: if not, we will have to put the work in hand and divert a substantial part of our income for this year to pay for it. The work will be done and life in the centre restored to normal as soon as possible: in the meantime, we have had to cancel our ever-popular Friday and Saturday coffee mornings, but other activities are carrying on as usual, with a plentiful supply of paper plates and cups. There are even people who think not being able to wash up has its advantages! By the time our next magazine comes out, I hope we will be able to bring good news of the repairs. Jane

A New Kenyan Link Following a meeting at St. Mary s on 5 th March 2015, the PCC supported my proposition of a new Kenyan Link with the Parish of St. Mark in Kajiado Diocese, Kenya. First, a very brief background of Kajiado and the Parish of St. Mark. Dark grey = Kajiado Light grey = Nairobi The Parish of St. Mark: Kajiado is an area roughly equivalent in size to Wales and is located to the south east of the capital city Nairobi, stretching from the outskirts of the city down to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is an arid and poor area of Kenya. Kajiado regularly suffers severe droughts. After each drought it takes a long time for the local population to rebuild lives, livestock and crops. The Kajiado Anglican Diocese has greatly developed in the recent years with 20 parishes and 31 priests serving in this extensive diocese. This is one of the 20 parishes and is served by one priest. The parish has three churches, St. Mark s, St, Mary s and St. Paul s and serves a population of about 15,000. During my visit to Kenya last summer I had the opportunity to visit Ss. Mark s and Paul s churches which are 90 miles away from my home in the outskirts of the city of Nairobi. The parish of St. Mark just like other parishes in the diocese is faced with various challenges i.e. finance for training of lay evangelists and youth ministers who are very instrumental in the mission and ministry of the parish; support for the young people; early marriages for school girls; water etc... Both churches Ss. Mark s and Paul s are located in small village market centres and are the focal point for the communities.

The area which St. Mark s serves experiences acute shortage of water. The only borehole in the market centre doesn t work. The diesel generator has not functioned for a couple of months because the community cannot afford the cost of repairs. The river (5 miles away) is dry most of the time. Unfortunately, rainfall has become unreliable in this part of the world and people are yet to learn innovative ways of harvesting rain water when it rains. St.Mark's Church This water shortage caught my attention when my son Steven requested for some drinking water and he was told by our hosts at the church that they had ran out of water (he thought it was a joke!). Kajiado is an arid and poor area compared to other parts of Kenya and I believe the parish of St. Mark can hugely benefit from a relationship with our parish. Any form of help that we are able to offer can go a long way in this dry area. The people have tremendous faith and perhaps there is also something for us to learn from them. Way forward: Our parish is now involved with outreach activity locally through a fine group of volunteers (Gateway, Open the book, Men s breakfast etc). Similarly, the PCC has recommended that I put together a group of volunteers to support this working partnership with the Parish of St. Mark in Kajiado. St Paul's Church

This group of volunteers will keep communication with Kenya alive and ensure an ongoing flow of information to our parish; raise funds through various events such as Quiz nights, Smartie tubes, Harvest Sunday Lunch etc... It will also be great if there are willing volunteers to go out on a visit and experience life and the Maasai people of Kenya. I think this will be a very exciting part of our outreach that will help us look beyond our own needs and shores. Also, with the difficulties that the Anglican Communion is currently faced with, this outreach opportunity will somehow help protect the unity of the church for which we all desire and pray for. Do get in touch with me if you would like to be part of this Kenyan Link. 8 THE ANNUAL MEETING Our annual meeting as a parish this year will be on 19 April at St Andrew's, at 2 pm following a shared lunch. It's not perhaps the most obviously thrilling day in our churches' year, but it is a necessary and important part of our common life as we receive reports, accept accounts, and elect our councils and churchwardens. It is both an obligation, a legal requirement as a Church of England parish and as a charity, and an opportunity: a chance to read and hear a snapshot of the parish's life, including those aspects in which as individuals we may not be involved; a chance to ask questions about why things happen in the way they do; a chance to say 'thank you' to the many people whose commitment of energy and time underpin our life and mission. There is, of course, also the chance to offer ourselves for new roles: if you would like to be part of shaping the life of the parish, how about standing for election for one of the District Church Councils or for the PCC? If you are interested, have a word with one of the wardens or the clergy. Please come along, not just for the formalities, but for lunch beforehand; you could catch up with old friends, make new ones, and think up some fiendish questions to ask the team rector... Jane

Wickford and Runwell Mother's Union Our congratulations to Pat and Peter Cooper and Brenda and Dave Wilson who celebrated their Golden Weddings in March. Both couples renewed their vows at the 11am Service at St. Catherine's on March 8th. this was a happy family occasion. Pat and Brenda are both Mothers' Union members and we presented them each with a card and a Golden Wedding rose bush with our love and blessing. By the time you read this we will have welcomed our new Deanery Chaplain, the Rev'd Margaret Fowler, to our March evening meeting. Margaret is well known to us as she spent some time in the Parish when she was training for the Ministry. Our April meetings are as follows: 2nd. April 12.30pm shared lunch 1.30pm "Thursday night to Sunday morning" a meditation for Maundy Thursday 15th. April 7.30 pm We will be welcoming Lucy Bubb, our new Diocesan Overseas Rep, who will be telling us about her visit to Myanmar and the Mothers' Union members there. Those who heard her speak at M. U. Council have said how interesting her talk is so why not join us in St. Catherine's Hall to hear for yourselves.

Our thoughts and prayers have been with Barry Pocock after his complicated surgery and we wish him well. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, Joan and all the family. Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. Ralph Waldo Emerson Wickford and Runwell Team Ministry Supporting Basildon Women s Refuge Due to lack of space; Please only take items to St. Andrew s Church on the last FRIDAY (or as near as possible) of each month; then they can be taken to the refuge. If you are unable to take our offering to St. Andrew s then please do pass it to one of your Church Wardens or your Priest. MEET & MAKE Meet and make is EVERY WEEK on Tuesdays at 2p.m. to 4p.m so please come and join us. Don t worry if you do not have a "project" going there is always something to join in with, over refreshments, chat and laughter. You can contact Val on , or Vicky on

Leaders have been DBS/CRB vetted. A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many men can a woman marry?" "Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. "How do you know that?" "Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the priest said, 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."

AND MORE ON ST ANDREW'S... Problems with our kitchen haven't deterred the community of St Andrew's from keeping their eyes on the bigger picture, and on the question we posed ourselves and the whole parish last autumn - how can we best shape our site and buildings to offer a place of worship, hospitality, and service in the centre of the town? We have secured a grant of 3,000 from the diocese to undertake a 'feasibility study': this means we can work with a professional to begin to give more practical form to our plans, to tease out possibilities, and ground our dreams in reality. As I write, we are waiting on recommendations from the diocese for someone to take on that role. It's the beginning of what may be a long road of exploring partnerships, thinking about finance, and, eventually, getting to grips with all the day-to-day challenges which any building project, small or large, brings with it. The development working group, drawn from across the parish, admitted at our last meeting that the prospect can be a daunting one - but it is also one which offers both tremendous excitement and promise, as we begin to plan for new ways in which we can use the resources entrusted to us to the glory of God and in love for those around us. Jane

A farewell but not good bye! Angela Woodward moves away to Loughborough next week and her presence will be sorely missed by all. Not only has Angela enabled and helped flourish the community and the work at St Mary's Church, but has been a valued, loyal and generous part of the work of the Team and a part of the lives of so many in Wickford and Runwell. Standing as Church Warden (more than once) she offered support at a crucial time recently. Her kind words have eased complicated anxieties and her faithful witness at work, rest and play have enriched us all. However our loss will be her family's gain as she moves closer to her daughter and granddaughter. We will be blessed at having spent so many years with you Angela and we wish you well in your new house and part of your life! Holding you in our thoughts and prayers.

THE HARBOUR CLUB I hadn t heard of the Harbour Club until my neighbour starting working there a few months ago. It is a day centre in a church hall in Battlesbridge and provides a safe haven for the over 65 s living with dementia. The members enjoy a range of activities, including board games, singing, arts and crafts, music and movement and many more. This day centre enables the carers to have some respite with the knowledge that their loved ones are being well looked after and it is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday. A two-course lunch is provided plus tea and coffee and the staff and members eat together promoting social interaction. The reason that I am writing this is simply because they are desperate for volunteer helpers. The volunteers need not stay for the full session; in fact any time that can be given will be very much appreciated. If you feel able to help please contact The Harbour Club for further information: T: E: info@theharbourclub.org.uk The Harbour Club is a social enterprise providing a service for a vulnerable sector of the local community. It is a Not for Profit organisation, that re-invest to support and develop the service provided. Pam Petts

Why is the passion of Christ so named? These days everything, we are told requires "passion", from watching or playing football, at work, in relationships, when selling, in our lives in general. We are informed that we need it to succeed, to reach our goals, to be fulfilled. The lack of it is often regarded as a fault. Truth be told, however we may profess to be "passionate" about any or all of these things, we do not constantly live our lives in such a place, rather it is peaks and troughs, highs and lows. This use of the word "passion" when set as the essential catalyst for so much sets us up for a fall, as everything has to come from us. The problem with that, is anything created and reliant on us and our world is ultimately fallible and inconsistent. Christ's passion however, was nothing like this, his passion comes from the Latin "passio", which means, simply, "suffering". That is actually what we are approaching, the event of Christ suffering a terrible torture for us. He did so on our behalf. He did this so that he could "become" sin enabling us to come before god as righteous as we can be. I suppose in modern parlance Christ had passion for us to be able to do so, and so he suffered on our behalf. In essence this is where the Greek word "Passio", and our word "Passion" crossover and intersect. The Greek Josephus, and the Roman historian Tacitus who recorded the event in independent documents say that they were surprised this suffering inflicted by Pilate and the establishment, and more that the subsequent persecution of the Jewish sect of Christians did not "snuff the idea out". We know today that despite the persecution that existed and still exists Christianity continues to grow due to the man and his many miracles (that was the ancient chroniclers explanation at the time).

This victory over so much from such humble beginnings, from such lowly people, would not and could have happened if the catalyst had been the solely result of our inconsistent and fallible work. We know that we were not left as orphans and the holy spirit called the early Christians and calls people to this very day! Our "passion" this lent must be to simply attempt understand why Christ chose to suffer for us, to try make his suffering worthwhile, and to be more passionate about the gift he gave us. To pray to be given the passion to do so. The definition of Grace is a gift given that is undeserved, that the recipient of the gift did nothing to deserve. Christ gift was and is delivered by grace to all of us. This gift means that all his children should to continue to bemuse and befuddle the many who would wish his message of love and resurrection from the death of sin to simply "fade away" as Tacitus expected. This level of gift entitles him to demand the highest efforts from us. It legitimizes his demand that everyone should strive to reach the door he opened for us all. We should love God with all our heart and soul as he requested, the same God who he allowed us to come before. We should love our neighbour as ourselves as that is SO clearly what the world needs now. We should try and bare and share the fruits of his suffering, his "passio", and his passion for us. His love, this ultimate act of grace should be the catalyst for us to ask him further into our lives so that by his grace we can change and prioritise our lives making the top of the list, the things that actually matter. As holy week approaches, that should be our goal. That Takes passion. Mike Tricker

What are you doing during CHRISTIAN AID WEEK? 10 th 16 th MAY 2015 Every year in May, thousands of volunteers across Great Britain go out collecting door-to-door for Christian Aid. Last year, houseto-house collections raised over two thirds of the Christian Aid Week total of approx. 15 million. As always, the Churches here in Wickford and Runwell played their part, and those who went out collecting reported a good response. Unfortunately, although the harvest is plentiful, the labourers are far too few to collect it in properly, which means that many streets in our area never see a Christian Aid collector! This year s campaign slogan is: Let s walk this world together. Let s be the change we want to see! Could you play your part, too and give a little of your time to collect during Christian Aid Week? Perhaps you could go out collecting with a friend. If a whole street is too much, perhaps you could collect from friends and neighbours? If collecting is not for you, please put something in one of the many envelopes that will be available in church. Whatever you are able to do, please remember Christian Aid and its collectors in your prayers, especially during Christian Aid Week! I shall be more than happy to provide further information on /feldwick1@gmail.com. Richard Feldwick

SUNDAY EVENING WORSHIP During the month you can find a variety of styles of worship on a Sunday evening at 6:30 pm. Regularly a small group meets at St Catherine's Church for Evening Prayer from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The Second Sunday has Taizé style worship at St Mary's Church. This is an opportunity to hold still, sing some of the gentle Taizé chants (to some exceptionally beautiful accompaniment) and to listen to themed readings. On the Third Sunday, St Andrew's Church hosts a quiet and reflective Healing Eucharist. The focus is on simplicity and wholeness and is held in the intimate space at the altar near the back of the Church. Evensong is led by the choir on the fourth Sunday back at St Catherine's Church, using the cadences of the psalms and offering different bible readings from the morning and an address. Finally, when there is a fifth Sunday, St Catherine's choir again lead us with a Songs of Praise focussing on hymns from whichever season of the Church year we find ourselves in. Add to this the cornucopia of morning and weekday services, there is plenty to enable your praise of God and to find a place where you can experience different ways of doing so! A linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day. In English, he said, a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn t a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative. A voice from the back of the room piped up, Yeah, right.
