Bishops...! Jesus' disciples struggled when they saw someone that wasn't a part of the "in" crowd doing good works in Jesus' name. In fact they asked whether they should stop the person. Jesus was emphatic in his answer. After a long struggle, The Church of England has finally come to the same conclusion. However, the issue was clouded and over-complicated. People managed to get tangled up in selective scripture reading and mistaking prejudice for truth. I also believe that those on all 'sides' of the argument about whether women should be ordained to the three-fold order of bishop, priest and deacon were distracted by so many diversions. I heard people talk of 'justice', 'rights' and of 'truth', 'tradition'. So many reasons 'why' and 'why not' were so far removed from the words of Jesus and his pattern of ministry. A long while ago I realised that Jesus was about including people. And the Church (and here I mean the whole Church) should be about including people. It should not be held against me that I am a white English heterosexual man with a tendency to grumpiness who lives in and accepts a society that starves other nations, mistreats the poor and seems to value the fickle world of celebrity as it becomes increasingly ego-centric..... God still loves me! It matters not to God, the transcendent God (we call "Father"), the incarnate God (Jesus), the dynamic loving God (we call "Spirit") - no, it matters not to God who is there loving caring guiding, it just matters that it happens. If I do not like who is doing it then I have to question myself and ask myself what I don't like... for what is it that I dislike about God's love being shown?? It is for this reason that I have found the debates frustrating. God has called people to show God's love to the world, how can I find that a problem? It is for this reason that I will delight and rejoice that, once again, Jesus has answered his disciples, opened our hearts, and enabled us to move on. I can now relax, knowing that those amazing women with whom I have served and continue to serve are now offered the same respect and affirmation that I have enjoyed during my 20 years of ordained ministry. Fr Jo

Wickford & Runwell Mothers Union It was with great sadness and shock we learnt of the unexpected death of Jeannette s husband Frank on Wednesday 2 nd July. Our thoughts and prayers have been very much with you and your family Jeannette, and pray you have found comfort and peace from all the love and prayers that have surrounded you at this time. We have all witnessed your great faith and know God will sustain and uphold in the weeks ahead. May God bless you. With brilliant sunshine and clear views over the Estuary we were escorted to our tables at the Roslin Hotel, Shoebury for afternoon tea. The tables were set out with pretty bone china and we were served a scrumptious tea by very attentive young waiters. We really enjoyed the afternoon because for once we didn t have to prepare the food and were able to get up from the table and leave the washing up to someone else! Great! Let s do it again. The Branch does not meet during the month of August, so our next meeting will be on Thursday 4 th September 11.45am Quiet time & prayers 12.30pm Shared lunch 1.30pm Branch Review Enjoy your Summer break, and look forward to meeting again on 4 th September in St. Andrew s Centre.

REMEMBERING THE FIRST WORLD WAR The centenary of the outbreak of World War I falls on 4 August this year. There will be a service of commemoration at 11 am at the War Memorial at the entrance to the Memorial Park in Runwell Road, to remember all who served and suffered in that war, and to offer prayers for peace. Later in the day LIGHTS OUT is part of a national invitation to everyone to turn off their lights from pm, leaving a single light or candle for a shared time of reflection. The Royal British Legion will be holding a short service at 10 pm followed by a vigil at the memorial: candles marked with the legion's poppy symbol are being sold in support of the Poppy Appeal in Marks and Spencers and at the RBL Club. In this year in which so much will be said and remembered about the 'war to end all wars', we continue to pray that men and women throughout the world may turn away from war and from all the actions of fear and hate and greed which bring war into being. Jane All three Churches will be open during the day to allow a time to pray for and focus on Peace

Saturday 30 August Confirmation 2014 St Mary's Church Hall 10 am to 4 pm (bring you own lunch - tea and coffee provided!) A day of preparation and understanding the Eucharist Whilst we hope that those who would like to be confirmed (or are exploring the possibility) would be able to attend, this day is open to all and will offer some insights into why and how we worship. Please look out for "sign-up" sheets in the three Churches and talk to your priest if you are considering confirmation (the confirming of your baptismal promises). All candidates from Wickford and Runwell will be welcomed at a confirmation service at the church of St Mary Magdalene, Great Burstead, on 28 September.

PARISH DAY - 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 Once again, we will be inviting EVERYONE from our three churches to come together for a day of learning and exploration, of shared thought, laughter (and food), and of worship. A day to build up our relationships, challenge our different ways of thinking, and even dream a few dreams. This year we will take as our focus the question 'what is the church for?' We won't be the first to ask the question, and we'll tap into other people's expertise, and particularly the 'Five Marks of Mission', identified by Anglican churches from around the world some 30 years ago as a summary of what they were and are about. The Five Marks are To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom To teach, baptise and nurture new believers To respond to human need by loving service To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth This is not just a day for church council members and wardens (though I very much hope you will all be there), but for anyone who is part of our church communities, whatever service you attend and however frequently or infrequently you come. Please put the date in your diaries now: more details, sign -up lists, and some starter questions to think about, will appear in the magazine and in our churches over the next few months. Jane

An Angelic Art Exhibition The week beginning 29th September (the feast of St Michael and All Angels) will see an exhibition of local art in St Mary's Church. We are hoping to encourage art clubs, schools, uniformed groups (such as the guides) and anyone with a creative eye to produce art work focussing on angels. When we say angels, we mean in every sense. The heavenly messengers, guardians, friends that travel alongside, wings or no wings, literal or abstract. More details will be out soon - but if you are part of or know of an art group then please let us know (that's Lyn Bear and Fr Jo).

SOLID On 11 th 13th July, we took 4 members of WARY, Wickford And Runwell Youth group- Eleanor, Lily, Saskia and Thomas, to Solid, a church activity weekend, held at Stubbers, in Upminster. We camped for the weekend. On Friday and Saturday nights there was worship in the big tent. And, during the day on Saturday, there were lots of activities to choose from. Our group did fantastically well at jeep driving, argocats, climbing, abseiling, the high ropes course, canoeing, archery and rifle shooting. The weekend finished, on Sunday morning with a communion service in the big tent and we all arrived home on Sunday afternoon, tired, but having had a great time. Sue and Phil

MESSY CHURCH UPDATE: Our celebration of Bible Sea Sides in July was not a huge success in that only five children came along. But, many people have very kindly said we adults enjoyed our afternoon of creativity. I have mulled over the afternoon, and yes there were moments where I felt the Holy Spirit moving with us at St Andrews that afternoon. I watched two little children looking for shells in the sand pit, and then moving to the paddling pool to sail boats. Patience and Eileen chatting as they designed mosaic fish with one little girl determined to finish her fish, Pat good-naturedly managing to roll out sticky clay in the heat of the afternoon, Kitty doing remarkable things with coloured sand, Jan patiently sticking our shell prayers to the seaside background which we used in the celebration and then were taken to St Catherine s to be used in the family service, Jane ingeniously teaching us a new version of He s got the whole world in his hands with swimming fish and nipping crabs amazing! Then finally onto an incredible seaside picnic prepared by our Messy Chef s Val and Lyn. A short time ago it was my turn to write opening prayers at my Course in Christian Studies. I asked Jane for some inspiration and she said it was ordinary time in the church calendar. No major festivals to remember just God. God I think is challenging, surprising me into new awareness. The kindness and caring words of many people in our parish after our celebration has helped me to reflect and reminded me to look for the signs of God in the things that I do and in the people I meet. More recently in the opening prayers for our Bible Sea Sides Messy Church planning meeting I used a quote from Mother Teresa. We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But, the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. How quickly I forgot! Carol. Future dates: Harvest celebration planning meeting Tuesday 2 nd September 4pm St Andrew s Centre Messy Church Harvest Celebration Saturday 13 th September 2-4pm St Andrew s Church

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT AT ST ANDREW'S A packed church, a warm summer's evening - and a great choir! Men2Sing, the Woodham Male Voice Choir, gave a wonderful concert of melodies, familiar and unfamiliar, and left a buzz of delight among their audience. It was a splendid start to our 50th anniversary celebrations: our thanks go to the choir, and especially to Pat Hughes, who arranged the whole evening. Another of Fr Jo's favourite cartoons.....!

RENEWING THE DIOCESAN HOUSE OF PRAYER 'Pleshey: a quiet place within the life of the Diocese where through encounter with God we are inspired to holy living.' Parish days, training courses, ordination retreats, quiet times as groups or individuals: many of us will have experienced the peace and hospitality of the house and garden we know simply as 'Pleshey'. Anyone who has been there recently will know of the refurbishments and improvements which are now in hand. Some have already been completed: the Gatehouse is now a wonderfully comfortable selfcontained space, with ensuite bedrooms, kitchen and sitting room. Still to come are new and improved meeting spaces in the main house, and much needed upgrades to the services. The intention is that the house will retain its very special quality as a place of prayer, peace and refreshment, with facilities which offer a 'modest excellence' rather than luxury, remaining affordable to all users. Inevitably the building scheme itself is costly, and an appeal has gone out to each of the parishes in the diocese to make a donation towards the total. At a recent PCC meeting, we recognised how much as a parish we value our retreat house, and agreed that we wanted to respond positively, even though our own finances are limited. We decided that on two Sundays, 31 August and 7 September, there will be a plate put out in each of the churches for individual donations: whatever is given there will then be made up to a total of 500 from PCC funds. I know that many of you are already be giving very generously to the church and to other worthwhile causes, but please think about whether you can spare something, however small, to make enable our retreat house to continue its ministry to us and to those who come after us. Jane

"easyfundraising" Raising funds for the Parish has never been easier than with our donation page through easyfundraising. With every click as you shop online it could mean a further contribution. Please support us and invite family and friends to do the same. BISHOP STEPHEN WELCOMES WOMEN BISHOPS APPROVAL Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford has warmly welcomed the final approval of the General Synod of the Church of England for women to become bishops in the Church. Stephen Cottrell, the Bishop of Chelmsford, has warmly welcomed the final approval of the General Synod of the Church of England for women to become bishops in the Church. This is a great and momentous day for the Church of England," he said. "Twenty years after the first women were ordained as priests we have passed legislation for women bishops. But I am delighted not just because this vote has gone through, but because the gracious tone and manner of the debate in which many Chelmsford people played a part, and the particular set of proposals General Synod has approved, mean that we continue to be a Church where all are welcome and where the views of the minority are heard. I now commit myself to ensuring that the principles that undergird these proposals and the joyful outcome they have led to become lived reality in our diocese.

'YES'.... AT LAST Twenty years after women were first ordained as priests, the General Synod of the Church of England, the church's governing body, finally voted on 14 July 2014 to accept women as bishops. As the result was announced, the archbishop of York, chairing the meeting, asked that there should be no applause, no expressions of delight: but within moments he had ended the formal business, and was dancing in the meeting chamber as he led the synod singing 'We are marching in the light of God'. For a few within the church this will be very difficult, but provision has been made for them, and there is a commitment to working together in trust. For the vast majority, the response has been a mixture of relief and delight: relief both that we have reached the end of a long and difficult road and also that we no longer have to explain to those outside the church that the institution is inherently unfair; Women bishops of the Anglican Communion at the Lambeth Conference delight that the gifts of both women and men together can be fully used in this particular part of God's service. There are still practical and legal steps to be taken before the first woman bishop can be appointed, but she could be consecrated within a year or two. And, of course, when she is appointed she will require great strength as she faces tremendous scrutiny from both those within and beyond the church. That's for the future: for now, let us thank God for the decision that has been made. Jane

Here is a very rich treat of a dessert I want to share with you Chocolate Fudge Pudding Ingredients Sponge Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees C Fudge 4oz Butter or Margarine 4oz demerara sugar 4oz sugar 1 heaped tablespoon of cocoa 1 egg 2 4 oz walnut pieces 4oz SR Flour 1 heaped tablespoon cocoa 2 tablespoons of milk Sauce 1 oz demerara sugar tablespoons of coffee ¾ pint of boiled water make sponge as per creaming method put into a greased oven proof dish mix together fudge ingredients to form a powdery mixture sprinkle fudge across top of sponge mix make sweet black coffee with sauce ingredients Carefully and slowly poor the hot coffee mixture over the sponge, then slide dish gently into hot oven to cook for approximately minutes. The finished dish should have a cooked sponge appearance on top and when served there should be a thick rich sauce in with the sponge. Delicious served with cream or ice cream or a hot chocolate sauce. It doesn t taste of coffee only chocolate! Care should be taken when transferring to oven to cook because the sauce is very hot! Enjoy! Angela Wagstaff

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Several years ago we started A Meal on Sunday once a quarter in St.Catherine s Hall.We found there were many people in the Parish who live alone and find Sundays can be very difficult and lonely, so why not try and get them together for a meal. This has proved very popular when up to thirty people sit down together to enjoy fellowship and food. We have four teams of 3/4 volunteers who organise these meals on a rota system, so it means they only get called on once a year. Sadly through ill health we are one team short. Is there anyone who would be willing to get a team together so we can carry on this work of outreach to the lonely. You would find it very rewarding. People from our three churches come along plus others from the wider community. PLEASE give this serious thought, to find out more please ring THANK YOU. Cleaner - required once a fortnight for a couple of hours to work in family home doing all kinds of housekeeping. Please contact Emma
