BUT OUT This is not a spelling mistake. The season of Advent is upon us and I thought I'd like to make an Advent pledge. Advent, like Lent, is a period of preparation before a fantastic Christian event. It's a time of reflection and preparation that often gets gobbled up in our mad rush to be ready for Christmas. Our shops and restaurants are already in Christmas mode; carols will be sung ad nauseam before the day itself and so that precious time could be lost. At St Andrew's Church, we are all invited to pause for a moment early on a Thursday evening just to reflect upon the excitement of that readying. As I begin to boil with the pressure of making sure all the cards are sent off (although my distant friends are now used to receiving their cards within the twelve days of Christmas!!) and as I look in crowded shops for the present that I hope will meet the mark, I want to be able to do something tangible to adjust my approach. That is when the phrase "but out" came to me. How many times have you said "I really like that person BUT... " or "I don't like the way they.... BUT...."? Be honest with yourself! We seem to do it all the time. We consciously separate the person in two. The bit we like and the bit we don't like. Quite often we use this way of speaking to soften a criticism or complaint. Other times we are trying, in vain, to reconcile our experiences of someone. It doesn't work and it's not okay. There is a complex psychological explanation for the reasons why we do this. Mary (my wife not the BVM!), in her magnificent way, helped me to understand this concept more clearly. Melanie Reizes Klein was a Freudian psychologist who looked closely at child development. She saw that we are prone, as children, to split our relationship with a parent in two... "good" and "bad". A parent, to a child, cannot hold both positions at once! We get so caught up in this way of thinking as we grow older so we are inclined to do the same in the way we view people.
Our literature, films and TV are filled with characters that are simplified into goodies and baddies. Yet we know that that is not true of ourselves or other people. The "good" and the "bad" are both present all the time. We want to avoid the bad so it is often sliced carefully away with a BUT. There are some people I dislike for their actions, politics or some gut reaction that I cannot really fathom. I have to be honest about my feelings and yet I also have to be honest about the integrity of that person. Are they totally bad? Is anyone totally rotten right through? Or, to put it in a specifically Christian way, is anyone void of the image of God? Of course not! I am called to see them as truly whole. I am called to see their beauty as well as their ugliness OR their ugliness as well as their beauty! So I have decided to avoid "but-ting in". I have pledged that, starting on Advent Sunday, I am going to join people back together. No more will I say "They are this BUT... ". I am now going to say AND. I have tried it already AND it works amazingly in redefining my attitude. Words are very powerful (indeed this feast will begin with "In the beginning was the WORD") and words must be used carefully and with impeccability and integrity. So why not join me? Simple things like the weather will be transformed as we say "It was sunny AND it was cold". People will take on a new look as we say "That person is very kind AND rather grumpy at times". And so the Kingdom of God will flourish as we accept that all that God made is very beautiful AND sometimes quite annoying too! 7 The Quiet Day at Pleshey 2013 I really looked forward to the Quiet Day with great anticipation. It was an opportunity to just be still, away from all the usual hustle and bustle. On the day, despite only vague memories of how to get there and a misguided satnav, Eileen and I eventually arrived. The focus of the day was Prayer reflecting on praying for others, praying silently and using our whole selves to pray. It challenged me in thinking about how I pray and reminded me again to not become complacent. It is so easy to fall into a pattern of doing things the way we usually do and then possibly missing the opportunities to experience God differently if only we attempt to encounter Him in different ways. I feel particularly at peace and connected to God when I m outdoors and surrounded by nature. The gardens at Pleshey offer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy this, with many a secluded spot to sit undisturbed. This year I found myself sitting at an apple tree though and a story forming in my head. It is just for a bit of fun which I hope you will enjoy with me. Well, I hang about each day just watching. I m nice and cosy in my spot. Just enough sunshine, water and nutrients. Others around to keep me company and none of them too bad. No rotten apples on this tree. Don t get me wrong there are some issues wiggly worms, creepy crawlies and noisy, chirpy birds, but with good enough cover and a bit of luck, not too much to worry about. No need to go anywhere, right! But alas, season end and time is moving on and before I properly know what is coming, I realise I m to be next the lucky apple to fall from the tree. Well now I have to prepare and make some decisions. Do I land and lie about to rot and feed the earth? Do I get picked up and become an apple pie or jam? Or do I let a pesky bird or some such come along and pick at me, which gets them through another season? Isn t this what God does from time to time? Shakes up our lives so we have to make a choice, lean on our faith and pray for His guidance. So keep alert, be prayerful, because who knows when you ll be the next one to fall from the apple tree! Marina Bailey
Advent Quiet Times Do you walk through December with delight or trepidation? Loving the lights and the busyness, or oppressed by the 'to do' list? Or perhaps with the memories of other times, other Decembers, tugging at your heart. Once again, we will be offering some 'Advent Quiet', chances to step away from the commotion of Christmas preparation and re-adjust our perspective. On three Thursdays, 5th, 12th and 19th December, there will be a time of prayer, silence, music and meditation in St Andrew's starting at 7 pm and lasting for minutes. You are welcome to come to some or all.
BETTIE'S AT ST ANDREW'S Saturday 9 th November 2013 saw St. Andrew s transformed in to Bettie s Bazaar and Tea Shop. People were welcomed in to the Centre by Fred resplendent in his train driver s uniform urging them to pick an underground station in the hope of winning 50. The Meet and Make group had countless items they had made on Tuesday afternoons which were very popular and the tombola was full to bursting with prizes just waiting to be won. Moving to the Church - visitors were welcomed by waitresses who were eager to take orders for drinks whilst the piano played background music, there were numerous cakes for sale to eat in or take away. Mick and Carol urged everyone to have a go at the bonus ball, guess the weight of the cake or the name of the dolly. The waitresses were rushed off their feet and cakes simply flew out of the door. It was a wonderful occasion which raised 570 for Church funds but, better still, welcomed many visitors to our lovely Church and provided a feeling of togetherness and team work. Thank you to all who worked so hard.

CREATING A NEST FOR SPARROWS Some months ago, I wrote about the Sparrows initiative, a diocesan project to establish high-quality childcare in church and parish buildings, and the invitation which had been made to St Andrew's to be part of this. There have been lots of conversations, plans and possibilities aired since then. The St Andrew's DCC, the PCC, and the wider church communities have all been part of the thinking, and we are close to bringing the project into being. In practical terms, the intention is to retain the front third of St Andrew's as worship space, with secure but movable screens separating the rest of the building which from Monday to Friday each week will be used by Sparrows. Other changes will include creating storage in the choir area for vestments, altar frontals, and church supplies, so that the priest's vestry can be converted for children's toilets, refurbishing the choir vestry as a prayer room available to all, and the addition of a church office in the present chapel area. We hope to provide additional storage with a substantial shed or container placed outside at the rear of the church - and that will house stacking chairs for the times when we use the whole building, as now, for team services and special events. There will be work to be done, as well, on St Andrew's Centre, which will still be used for all the community events we now hold (especially coffee mornings) but also as the place for our midweek worship. A faculty application for the changes to the building will be considered by the PCC at the end of November. From the St Andrew's congregation, a small working group has come together to plan the practicalities and to look at fund-raising for the parts of the work we will need to put in hand: the major building costs will be borne by Sparrows, and they will appoint and manage the staff and take all responsibility for the promotion and running of the child care. They hope to interview candidates for the manager's post in the near future.
All of that seeks to answer the questions 'what's happening?' and 'how will it work?' Important questions - but just as important is 'why are we doing this?'. The Sparrows project offers a vision of the church building as a place where children are cared for and nurtured because each one is precious in God's sight: in enabling that to happen we will be meeting a real need in our community. It is a vision of our church community as partners in offering that care, by praying for staff and children, by visiting, by befriending, by making God's love known through our relationships, our actions, and our words. It is a vision for a church which draws on its history and present to give to the future - and, I believe, we will receive much in return (not least a degree of financial security). It's a challenging vision, and one which has asked the people of St Andrew's to be generous with their space, their worship, with their well-established ways of doing things, to have courage to change and to meet the difficulties which will inevitably arise. Please pray for us as we continue on this exciting journey - and for the leaders and staff of Sparrows, and the children and families whom we hope to meet on the way. 'Let the little children come to me: do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.' Jane
"Seeing Jesus" As I write this I m looking back at the pictures we explored through this course, which reflected images of Jesus at different stages in His life. This was such an interesting way of reflecting on the images that we hold of Jesus, particularly as the artists came from varying countries. It was also fascinating to talk about the pictures with others before we knew specifically what the artists own intentions were in the images. Often there were strong reactions to the pictures and they all evoked some type of response. Looking back on the course as a whole I remain challenged by the question how do I see Jesus? Is He defined and confined to my own limited view. There were themes coming through the course for me as well of seeing Jesus as relevant today, not just in the times of the bible stories and His humanity that we can all connect with in different ways. What I also loved about this course was that it was a sharing of thoughts and reflections whether you knew something about art or nothing at all, whether you spoke lots or very little and someone always tended to notice something that no-one else may have seen, something surprising. Some were also inspired to create their own works displayed on the wall in St. Andrew s centre. I hope it will continue to inspire us in seeking Jesus and not just in the usual places and in the same ways as we always do. Marina Bailey
A picture is worth a thousand words 1918 newspaper advertisement Seeing Jesus was a six week course run by Canon Jane with contributions from all members of the clergy team. Each week we looked at a picture, listened to the biblical text on which it was based and discussed questions about what the pictures conveyed to us. Many issues of belief and faith were raised. We all respond differently to the various media and forms of artistic expression. Apparently we remember 10% of what we read, 50% of what we see and hear, and 70% of what we discuss with others (Edgar Dale). So this course was an excellent teaching ploy! It was fascinating to hear other people s perceptions of what we saw and heard and certainly challenged my own assumptions. Canon Jane encouraged us to produce our own pictures of how we perceive some of the texts. Julia and Pat rose to this challenge and their pictures have been on display in St. Andrew s Hall. I always find that discussion with others moves me forward in my own faith journey so I personally gained a lot from attending these sessions. I have always found it rather irritating that, in European Art, Jesus, who was of course Jewish, is generally portrayed as blond with blue eyes. What I had not realised (foolishly) is that all communities want to claim Jesus as their own, as He indeed is, and portray Him with his skin, hair, facial features, clothing, etc.. similar to their own. I suppose making Him more relevant to them. This was a light bulb moment for me! Overall, for me personally, the course reinforced the belief that Jesus and the Gospels are relevant to all peoples across all ages and helped me to think more deeply about some familiar stories. In order to make the course materials accessible to more people: the pictures; associated biblical texts; and some of the questions for consideration, will be laminated and placed in files in each church. The files can be studied in church or borrowed for longer perusal at home. I would urge people to look at them. Val Harris.
GENEROUS GIVING Cast your mind back to the summer of No, we are not talking Olympics, here. But we are talking about a major achievement. In each of our three churches we tackled the difficult subject of money, with a TRIO presentation to think about stewardship and giving. We knew soon afterwards that people had responded generously and promptly. It's only now, however, as our gift aid officer, Chris Beauchamp, has worked through the figures for the financial year , preparing to make the claim from HMRC, that we realise just how extraordinary that response was. Compared to the previous year, regular, committed giving across the parish rose from just over 33,000 to nearly 46,000. Although some of that took the form of particular donations, it is still a wonderful result. So - our thanks and congratulations to the team who organised the TRIO campaign, to our visiting preachers, to Chris for processing the information, and above all to the faithful and generous members of our congregations, who, in a time of economic stringency, have given and continue to give so freely. Jane MEET & MAKE Meet and make is EVERY WEEK on Tuesdays at 2p.m. to 4p.m so please come and join us. Don t worry if you do not have a "project" going there is always something to join in with, over refreshments, chat and laughter. You can contact Val on , or Vicky on
Arthur Bullman It is with great sadness that we greet the news of Arthur's death on 26th November. Arthur and Betty have been such a huge part of the life of St Mary's Church. The small reminders will be there in mended Church keys and metal candle stands. While the cast iron guttering fitted with those expertly made brackets will stand for many years! For most of us, we will have memories of Arthur driving his steam tractor (even carrying Santa to the Bazaar) or the small steam train that whistled around the Vicarage garden. He will be known to many of us as the gentle and kind man who often left his flat cap in the pew or chuckled at the beauty of life and the God he readily saw reflected in the world. Our thoughts and prayers are, of course, with Betty and the family. But our thanks must be to God that we have had the privilege of knowing and being with Arthur. Fr Jo Arthur and Stephen one Summer - doing what they do best!
SUNDAY EVENINGS IN OUR CHURCHES As a parish, we, rightly, do our best to build up our common life and the relationships between our congregations. But we also value the diversity which our three churches are able to offer, drawing on their distinctive traditions. This richness is especially evident on Sunday evenings. A particular Anglican tradition is upheld at St Catherine's, where a robed choir and the cadences of the Book of Common Prayer find their place on the fourth Sunday of the month. St Andrew's has long held a peaceful and gentle Eucharist with an emphasis on healing, both personal and for the world around us, on the third Sunday. And St Mary's have kept their practice of making the evening of the second Sunday a particular time of meditation and calm, but replaced 'Sacred Space' with a Taize service, using the simple chants of that tradition to draw us into prayer. For all their differences, the three services share a common character of offering a time of quiet, a space for reflection which sometimes isn't present on a Sunday morning. All draw people from our three churches and sometimes beyond; and, of course, all are welcome. And if you want something to energise rather than calm you, when there is a fifth Sunday, St Catherine's raise voices in Songs of Praise. Jane
Taken from 'No Matter What' by Debi Gliori "Does love wear out" said Small, "does it break or bend? Can you fix it, stick it, does it mend?" "Oh help," said Large, "I'm not that clever, I just know I ll love you for ever." Small said, "But what about when we're dead and gone, would you love me then, does love go on?" Large held Small snug as they looked out at the night, at the moon in the dark and the stars shining bright. "Small, look at the stars ~ how they shine and glow, but some of those stars died a long time ago." "Still they shine in evening skies - love, like starlight, never dies." Thanks to Clare Lissenden for this poem. A note from Sue During September and October, I really enjoyed spending some time at St Catherine s and St Mary s Churches and getting to know members of the congregations better. The time spent in the two churches also helped me to learn to do things in slightly different ways and I have really appreciated the help and encouragement I have received. I currently back at St Andrew s. And from now on, the pattern will be that I spend three Sundays a month at St Andrew s and I will spend the other Sunday alternating between St Catherine s and St Mary s. I look forward to continuing to serve amongst you all. Sue
Wickford and Runwell M.U. The visit of The Encore Harmony Singers to St. Catherine s Church on Wednesday 16 th October was a musical treat not to be missed. They brought back memories of some of the old favourites from the different decades, which all present really appreciated. They certainly lived up to their title Harmony Singers. A really great evening. 20 25 years.....!!!! On Sunday 17th November, Steven and I celebrated our 25th silver wedding anniversary, and we also had our wedding vows renewed by Norbert. It was a most wonderful occasion, just as exciting as that special day 25 years ago!! What made it fantastic was how many of wonderful church family, along with our own family and friends, were able to attend. There was much love in the church. Afterwards, we went over the church hall for wine and nibbles. It was absolutely packed! We run out of chairs, standing room only! We would like to thank Elsie and Jeanette, and their wonderful husbands, for taking care of the buffet, buying and preparing of all the lovely food and Elsie for the most marvellous cake. Wow, it was beautiful. Also thanks to Pat for the most beautiful flowers. They were superb. Thank you to all of you that sent us cards and presents it was overwhelming!!! We love them all. All in all, a most fabulous day spent with the most fabulous people. With all our love and blessings, Clare and Steven. Xxxxxx NOTE FROM THE EDITOR A while ago I received an from a lady called Jane Copeland. Are you able to help with her enquiry below? If you can help please contact Angela Wagstaff for the details for Jane Copeland. Thanks. I saw a copy of the parish magazine which referenced Christine Rowe who suggested a Wordsworth poem. I live in Texas and knew Christine as a child. She taught me to ride. I lived in Thorndon Park. I would like to reach Christine. I have a postal address from some time ago, but would like an address if you have one for her. If not, perhaps you would be kind enough to provide her with my address. Thanks so much.
THE GATEWAY PROJECT CHURCHES IN WICKFORD & RUNWELL "The hand of help in the community" AN UPDATE ON THE FOOD BANK FOR WICKFORD AND RUNWELL Harvest celebration in schools and churches have produced a bumper crop of tins, packets, boxes, etc for the Gateway Project, thank-you. There is still a particular need for long-life milk, so please look out for that when you are doing your shopping. As Christmas approaches, we would like to include some treats in the food parcels. Our three churches have been asked to contribute Mince Pies so please think about adding a packet to your shopping in the next few weeks and put it in the collection crate in one of our churches. And from Paul Waldron: Over the past few weeks the Gateway Project has seen a vast increase in numbers using the service. As you are aware we now have gone to prepacked food parcels which is working really well. A big issue we have is that if we continue to see the numbers rise like we are at the moment, we will not have enough stock to see us through till Easter. I did say at the ministers meeting last week that I felt we had enough stock for about a year but this was really an underestimate from me. For some reason the weekly donations of food and toiletries has decreased so can I please ask that you can keep this is people's minds and hearts and to push for donations. Please remember your donations from the church for Christmas to be with me by 10th December. The 12th and 19th December we will hand out these extra food gifts from the churches (one per household) and I will keep a
record of who gets one. These weeks may see a vast increase again in numbers. We urgently need toiletries as the supply for these is very low. Keep up the good work and as we look towards Christmas, let us play our part in making Christmas real and comfortable to the community of Wickford. God Bless Paul Waldron Telephone Mobile HAVE YOU MADE A WILL? Every November, the legal profession and nine major charities team up for WILL AID. For that month participating solicitors make no charge for writing a basic will but instead invite clients to make a donation, which is distributed between the charities. Last year I realised that my last will was made so long ago, that my 20-year old nephew didn't appear in it: time to update it, I thought. And what better way to do it, than to use this opportunity to benefit charities doing valuable work at home and abroad. Sadly, this year there are no Wickford solicitors taking part but firms in Basildon and Billericay which are; if you are thinking about making a will, why not get in touch with them before the end of November? Peace of mind, lawyers working for free, and good causes benefiting...what's not to like? For more details of the scheme, and details of local participating solicitors, look up Will Aid on line. Jane

Sunday 10 th November Remembrance I had never been to the march through Wickford before, and this year after a rush from the St. Andrew s Service, I walked briskly and caught up with the march in the Runwell Road. I was astounded at the number of people who were part of this silent march to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in wars. There were so many people it was difficult to actually see the wreaths being placed on the memorial, but I was able to listen to all the names called out, and remember them with respect and sadness. After the two minute silence and the raising of the flags for the different groups and organisations; Brownies, Beavers, Scouts, Air Cadets and so on, the public followed the procession back through the High Street to the Council Car Park, where the groups were dismissed. I felt so privileged to be part of the crowds, and humbled by the tender, gentle respect shown by so many people. I especially want to commend the students who were there representing the two Secondary Schools in Wickford; the young people from each of these schools looked so smart, so proud and their behaviour was just perfect for such an occasion. Well done to those representing Bromfords and Beauchamps schools. I was also very impressed and surprised at how every single child even the very small ones observed the silence TOTALLY what a credit to their parents and leaders. I shall certainly look forward to showing my respect in the future.
