It was in this environment of faithful adherence to the law that Jesus grew into spiritual maturity and an understanding of his identity and mission. 41 Now every year [Jesus'] parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 43 When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 44 Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Invitation to Communion Holy Communion today is in the ancient and festive manner called intinction. After you receive the communion wafer, dip it into the wine or grape juice, whichever is your preference. The wine is in the chalice; the grape juice is in the glass. If you wish to have the communion server dip the bread in wine for you and place it in your mouth, simply point to your mouth. You may then return to your seat. It has been a few months since we have collected the single food item, but it is a new year and time to kick it off with a super collection once again. Let s see. January, the Super Bowl is almost here, and ta da we will be collecting cans of soup? It doesn t matter what kind of soup you bring. A can, a box, or packets will all be tallies on the sheet above the wheelbarrow. Our target is 836 item/ Why? Because in October of 2016, we began this ministry for the foodbank and collected 835 cans! Let s see if we can hit the target amount. If we could do that, wouldn t it be super, 13

15 Organ Marathon on Sunday, January 20, from 2:00-5:00 pm. You are welcome to stay and listen/enjoy for 30 minutes, for 3 hours, or anything in between. The freewill donations go toward teens studying organ; therefore, it is called Phoenix Youth Rising. It is here at Lord of Life. All are welcome. Arts and Crafts Do you have some art, craft or musical ability you'd be willing to share with a small group? Our Arts and Crafts get-together is January 16 at 1:00 pm. Please join us. Volunteers Needed! The Buildings & Grounds Team will be taking down the Christmas decorations around the campus on Monday, January 7 and Tuesday, January 8 beginning at 9:00 am. We had such a great group helping to decorate let s see if we can have another great team to take them down. Women s 2019 Retreat at Lord of Life Lutheran Church on Thursday, January 10 All Women Welcome Suki Kisling, Women of the ELCA leader and cheerleader, will lead our retreat focusing on the words Psalms 139. Our wonderful and precious God made, surrounds and fully knows each one of us. We pray and sing with David, and lead me in the way everlasting. Continental breakfast and check in begin at 8:30 am, the program at 9 am. We ll end at 2:30 pm. We ll share music, laughter, lunch, worship and communion. Registration forms are on each counter in the Welcome Center and in the office. They are due back to the office with $20/ person by Monday, January 7. Our outreach will be an in-kind gift collection of size 2-6 diapers for the Alleluia Lutheran Church s Diaper Closet. Alleluia Lutheran Church in Phoenix is a small, but mighty congregation. Since March 2015, with a membership of 70, they have been providing diapers twice a month to at or below poverty level families. In 2017, they provided about 150 children with 90,000+ diapers. 140,000 diapers have been distributed in 2018, impacting 250 individual children during the year. They are asking for help in this their mission and called ministry. Retreat participants are asked to bring packages of size 2-6 disposable diapers. If you can t attend the retreat or would just want to help, you are invited to put a package in the big white box in the social hall. Gleaning Your Lord of Life gleaners will begin picking citrus fruit for St. Mary s Food Bank on Tuesday, January 22. Please call Gayle Snyder at to get your home on the list for picking. Before making the contact, check with your neighbors if they would like their trees done. Often when we are picking, neighbors will come over and ask if we can do their trees. We plan ahead our locations and times. Often we cannot add more homes on a given day. Also call if you d like to glean with us. The cost, which is $25, goes to St. Mary s Food Bank. 15

16 January Saturday Nite Life, January 26 at 6:15 p.m. Entertainment will be our own LOL Big Band! Will have an Italian themed dinner with cheese ravioli lasagna with meat sauce, green garden salad, broccoli parmesan, and dessert. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased starting January 5 at the Church Office and around worship services on the weekend. Come enjoy the Big Band music. They always put on an exciting show!
