From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, As we draw near to the end of the Christmas Season the Church places before us the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

The three kings known as the Magi left everything behind in search of finding the King of all kings, the Son of God. They stopped in Jerusalem and met with King Herod.

at that. When King Herod learned of the Magi s search for the Messiah he felt his kingdom threatened and so asked the Magi to return to him with the location of the child.

The Magi, after finding the Christ child were warned in a dream not to return to Herod and so they took another way back to their homeland.

Frankincense because He is Lord, He is God, and deserving of all worship. Myrrh for his burial because He would sacrifice Himself on the Cross to pay the ransom for our sins.

3 From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, As we draw near to the end of the Christmas Season the Church places before us the Solemnity of the Epiphany. It is the celebration of the three wise men that traveled from the East following a star that led them to the Christ child and Mary His Mother. The three kings known as the Magi left everything behind in search of finding the King of all kings, the Son of God. They stopped in Jerusalem and met with King Herod. They did not stay there because they realized that he was not the king they were searching for, he was not the king that they left everything behind for, rather he was an earthly king and an evil one at that. When King Herod learned of the Magi s search for the Messiah he felt his kingdom threatened and so asked the Magi to return to him with the location of the child. King Herod lied to the Magi and told them that he too wanted to give homage to the New King but in reality he wanted to kill Him. The Magi, after finding the Christ child were warned in a dream not to return to Herod and so they took another way back to their homeland. The Magi brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold was presented because Jesus is a King, the King of all kings. Frankincense because He is Lord, He is God, and deserving of all worship. Myrrh for his burial because He would sacrifice Himself on the Cross to pay the ransom for our sins. This weekend as we end our Christmas Season we follow the Magi on their long journey. They traveled a great distance following a star that eventually led them to the Child Jesus and Mary His Mother. It must have been a life changing experience for these travelers. We too have traveled through the Church s season of Advent and Christmas. Through the liturgies of the Church and the sacraments we have encountered the child Jesus and Mary His Mother. Like the Magi who were overjoyed and brought gifts to the Lord, let us be filled with his joy as we give ourselves to the Lord in faith, hope, and love. Parish Life: A special thanks to the Hautau family for donating the beautiful Poinsettias and to Bob and Beverly Lawrence the owners of Holiday Tree Farm for donating the large, stunning Christmas trees for our sanctuary and parish hall. I personally want to thank the many parishioners for their thoughtful Christmas cards, gifts, and delicious foods and desserts. I especially want to thank all of our parishioners for being so generous this Christmas. We rely on your contributions especially during Christmas and Easter, and your weekly donations to keep the parish running and to help us plan for the future. 4 Olivewood Sale Handcrafted from the Holy Land A Traditional Art & Livelihood for Holy Land Christians January 13th and 14th in the Parish Hall The handicrafts trade evolved as a cultural tradition of Christians in the Holy Land for many centuries. This indigenous form of art has since become an industry of great importance to the local people of the Holy Land who rely on it for livelihood, and to Christian pilgrims from all around the world whose holy pilgrimage can be memorialized for a lifetime in cherished olive wood or mother of pearl souvenirs. The olive wood carving market is the major source of income in the Bethlehem area. More than 65 percent of the income of the community in Bethlehem comes from this work. In recent years, however, the holy crafts trade has suffered many hardships due to social and economical pressures. Because of a sharp fall in tourism and also as a result of diminishing numbers of craftsmen who leave their traditional trade and emigrate due to the difficult conditions in their homeland, the Holy Land handicraft market is facing serious danger, and so is the Christian community in the Land. Sixty five years ago the Christians represented more than 28% of the total population in the Holy Land, today they are less than 1.5%.The loss of Christians in the land of Christianity s birth will represent a tragedy of immeasurable proportions for the billions of Christians worldwide. Parish Fundraiser Our food pantry now serves over 100 local families. SHOP-RITE, WEIS & OTHER GIFT CARDS Thank you for your continued support and generosity. Please support our Parish by purchasing Gift The hours for the Food Pantry are Mondays 12:00 pm Cards. Cards in $25, $50 & $100 denominations are 2:00 pm. We are closed on Holidays and for bad available after all Masses in the Parish Hall or by calling the weather office. Sacraments of the Church: Baptism: Infant Baptisms (Private & Communal) are celebrated on Saturdays at 11:30 AM & Sundays at 12:30 PM. An instruction class on Baptism will be provided in advance. Please call in advance to make an appointment and to ensure that the Church s requirements especially for Godparents are satisfied. Eucharist: If you are seriously ill or homebound and would like to receive Holy Communion please contact Father Ed. Adult Confirmation: Please call the office and ask about our religious education program for adults. Reconciliation: The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available Saturday 3:45pm-4:45pm, after weekday Masses 8:30am, during Adoration Monday evening 7:30pm-8:30pm and Friday morning 8:30am-9:30am, and anytime by appointment. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who wishes to receive this healing sacrament, the Anointing of the Sick, should contact Father Ed. Marriage: Couples contemplating marriage are asked to call the office for an appointment to discuss the Marriage Preparation Program. Arrangements should normally be made one year in advance and before any wedding dates are finalized.
