From Revd Graham Hedger No two churches are the same and in a benefice the size of Orebeck we are fortunate to be able to offer a wide range of services and activities. Here in Easton in a normal month we have all age worship which offers an informal, interactive church service suitable for all ages and backgrounds; the excellent café which provides stunning food and the opportunity to chat; and then on the fourth Sunday a more traditional service of Holy Communion but with the added bonus of COSMIC. Easton is the only church in the benefice offering monthly children s activities. This month we will also host a benefice service of sung communion. The diversity matters because we are all different, and as we go through life we perhaps change our views on the sorts of services and activities that we want from our local church. I count the Café on the third Sunday as part of our activities because one of the things a church should be seeking to do is to serve the local community, and what better way than providing excellent bacon butties, coffee and the space to chat to neighbours. Sadly, I only ever get in for the last few minutes because I m involved in services elsewhere, but there is always a warm welcome, and from what people tell me they really appreciate the Café. Why not pop along this month and bring a friend? Recently I ve been thinking a lot about how much our village communities rely on volunteers to run everything and to raise money to keep things going. What has always impressed me about Suffolk communities is that folk step up to the mark as volunteers or turn out in good numbers whenever there is a fundraiser. Without both of those activities we would be in a sorry state. Then there are those people who do all sorts of things quietly, behind the scenes, helping their neighbours. Community spirit and neighbourliness are commodities we should be rightly proud of in our community. Let s keep up all the good work in order that our villages can continue to be places of great community spirit. Graham From the registers: On May 27 we welcomed James William Annal into the church, when he was baptised. 2

It s. C O S M I C! Walls What do we use walls for? Why do we need them? Are they to protect us from the outside world? Do they keep us safe? This month at COSMIC we are talking about how we use barriers to keep ourselves safe and how the Romans believed the home was the most important place in society. We will look at how they used walls in Jesus's time. We will be thinking about how we, as people, are all the same, but also all different and how walls can be used as a barrier sometimes. Come along as we go for a little stroll around the church and village green looking at how walls are used in our village and what they mean. Sunday 22nd July am Emma Gibbon T: COSMIC (Children on Sunday Morning in Church) 5

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH A Message From Suffolk Trading Standards Suffolk Trading Standards have had reports of Suffolk residents receiving scam brochures offering grants as part of a 2018 government scheme. There is no such scheme! If you receive one report it to Action Fraud on their website or by calling Car Tax Scams Are Being Sent To Drivers As the demands for the new year's car tax are due in, scammers are faking messages from the DVLA to try and exploit it. Drivers are being targeted with a new scam promising a refund on their car tax. Fake text messages are being sent that look like they have come from the DLVA, telling people they have overpaid and are due some money back. The DLVA do not send texts or s about a vehicle tax refund. If you get one of these, it s not from the DLVA! Increase in Fraudsters offering Discount on Television Service Provider Subscriptions Fraudsters are cold calling victims, purporting to be from a television provider offering a discount on their monthly subscription. Victims have been told the following: their subscription needs to be renewed, that part or all of the TV equipment has expired and they are due an upgrade on the equipment/subscription. In order to falsely process the discount, the fraudster asks the victim to provide their bank account details. The scammers may also request the victim s identification documents, such as a scanned copy of their passport. The fraudsters are using the following telephone numbers: , and The fraudster s voices are reported to sound feminine and have an Asian accent. Later victims make enquiries and then discover that their TV service provider did not call them and that the fraudster has made transactions using their bank account details. 9

This type of fraud is nationwide. Since the beginning of this year (2018), there have been 300 Action Fraud Reports relating to this fraud. From the reports received, victims aged over 66 seem to be the most targeted. What you need to do Don t assume a phone call or is authentic: Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother s maiden name), it doesn t mean they are genuine. Criminals can exploit the names of well-known companies in order to make their scams appear genuine. Don t be rushed or pressured into making a decision: a genuine company won t force you to make a financial decisions on the spot. Always be wary if you re pressured to purchase a product or service quickly, and don t hesitate to question uninvited approaches in case it s a scam. Stay in control: Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. Always contact the company yourself using a known or phone number, such as the one written on a bank statement or bill. John Owen 10

Village People Kirsty Logan How long have you lived in Easton? 22 years! Why did you move here? I got a job teaching at Farlingaye High School so wanted somewhere small and affordable nearby but preferably not in the catchment area! What s your favourite thing about living here? Easton Primary School and Pre-School have been wonderful warm family environments for my daughter, I couldn t have wished for better. Also I am really pleased the village pub seems to be back on the up in the last few months! Long may it last! What s your least favourite thing about living here? Regionally I think there needs to be a cap on second home ownership, it does small communities no favours and pushes house prices and rentals beyond the reach of most locals. Let s make sure everyone has one affordable roof over their head before people get to have two, three or more... What s the most interesting job you ve ever had? I really enjoyed my years being a Lecturer in Music Tech, but I think being a freelance musician now, running the Rabble Chorus and playing in bands is probably more fun! I'm really lucky to be able to earn a living in a way that seems to benefit other people and gives me such a buzz at the same time. Have you ever lived in another country and if so, where and why? Boringly no, I was brought up in a farmhouse smallholding in Essex, moved to London for university and a subsequent job working with young offenders, then ended up back in the countryside in Suffolk. 11

If you could pass any law you would I'd pass two. Firstly ban hunting PROPERLY this time and secondly abolish public schools. The first because there is simply no excuse for such barbarity in this day and age. The second because we can never have a cohesive, fair and empathetic society whilst we still allow some children to be divided from their peers from as young as four, effectively telling the rest they aren't considered worthy of the same educational opportunities and loading the dice even more heavily against them. Your greatest strength is I'm a fairly determined sort of person. Your greatest weakness is Well I'd make a terrible diplomat... Your favourite TV programme is I don't have a TV so only really watch the occasional brilliant dystopian fiction series like the Handmaids Tale online. I just wish Trump would stop treating it like a 'How To' handbook! Your favourite book ever is I have too many to name! As a child though I read and re-read The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren over and over. My uncle bought it for me when my little brother died and it was the perfect story to help me through a confusing time. The best day of your life was When I paid off my mortgage recently I think. Ten years ago I was in a very very different place financially and I wasn't sure how I would ever be able to escape my situation. Starting the Rabble Chorus here in Easton was purely for my own sanity initially but as it has grown and become a job it has been one of the things that has allowed me to keep a roof over mine and my daughter's head, despite everything. Sometimes the smallest most unpromising ideas turn out to be lifesavers! 12

Religious Cowboy The devout cowboy lost his favourite Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later, a sheep walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn't believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the sheep's mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, "It's a miracle!" "Not really," said the sheep. "Your name is written inside the cover." Movies A man in a cinema notices what looks like a sheep sitting next to him. "Are you a sheep?" asked the man, surprised. "Yes." "What are you doing at the movies?" The sheep replied, "Well, I liked the book." 13

A BIT OF FUN! CAN YOU FIND 30 BOOKS OF THE BIBLE HIDDEN IN THIS PASSAGE? (Answers page 17) This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat pocket on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much that he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his John-boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving that she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That s a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the books are not necessarily capitalised. Truthfully from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in these paragraphs. During a recent fundraising event, which features this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phil-Lemonade booth set a new sales record. The local paper, the Chronicle, surveyed over 50 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, the books are all right here in plain view, hidden from sight. Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation that may help is that books Timothy and Samuel appear without their numbers. Also, keep in mind that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mass exodus, there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in these paragraphs waiting to be found. 14

ORGAN RECITAL FOR SUMMER EVENING I am delighted to let you know that David Price is returning to play our organ on Wednesday 8 th August in Hacheston Church. For those who were unable to attend last year you missed a most enthusiastic performance, we all had a splendid evening. Once again there is a range of light music from J S Bach to Francis Jackson, who was born in Everyone is welcome to this free short recital at 7pm, light refreshments will be served afterwards, donations towards the maintenance of the church would be appreciated. 16 Kaye Dawe
