2 Greetings and Christmas Blessings to all: From The Pastors Desk This is my first Christmas here at OLOS and I count it a blessing that the Cardinal has sent me here to be with you. I find here an open, faith-filled community committed and generous, truly what the Second Vatican Council meant when it described the Church as the "people of God." One of the reasons I am a catholic is the great mystery we celebrate. Frequently it is expressed in the saying "grace builds on nature" a kind of theological bumper sticker if you will. Never, before Christ, had a god of any kind left the security of eternity and entered time and thus taken on the human condition. This act in itself made two statements: first, the unprecedented love of God for us in Christ and second, our redeemable, perfectible nature that enables us to achieve the nobility offered in Jesus of Nazareth. Thus Jesus became one of us overcoming in himself our imperfection and calling us to ally with him and make ours a life like his. God our father thought our potential for goodness merited sending his own Son to share our humanity and ultimately bring it back to him. He permeated nature with his grace and made a profound statement about the goodness of the earth and our shared humanity. He appealed, if you will, to what Abraham Lincoln called the "better angels of our nature." Let us all be grateful, especially in this season that our potential for goodness has been affirmed and our fallen humanity lifted up in the child born as savior in Nazareth. May the image of the manger scene remind us of this great truth and inspire us to share our joy. Our expectation is that 70% or $7,100 will come from the weekly offertory. Parishioners contributed $7,939 for the week ending December 17th. Christmas Collection The Collection for the Christmas Masses will be Clergy Health & Retirement Trust. This is a diocese-wide collection which cares for the health and well being of our 590 priests. Your support helps care for their health and well being in retirement. OLOS Youth Ministry Alumni Reunion All college-aged students home for winter break are invited to a Youth Ministry Alumni Breakfast on Wednesday, January 3rd at 10:00 AM in the Bullock Center. 7 Sharon, MA From Senior Deacon Mike Our Lady of Sorrows Parish The fourth Sunday in Advent concludes with the promise of the Lord to the prophet Nathan that David s inheritance would result in the birth of a Savior. In fact, in the Gospel, the Angel Gabriel clarifies that promise by announcing to the young girl, Mary, that she would be the mother of this child. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." In times past, God spoke in fragmentary and varied ways to our fathers through the prophets; in this, the final age, he has spoken to us through his son, whom he has made heir of all things and through whom he first created the universe. ~Hebrews 1:1-2 Welcome to Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. 9 Sharon, MA Our Lady of Sorrows Parish OLOS Summer 2018 Mission trips High school This July , our high school parishioners will be heading to Washington D.C. for a week of service and learning. The Young Neighbors program provides a solid, Catholic approach to service and justice that balances scripture and Catholic Social Teaching with direct service. It provides the experiences, skills, and learning needed to help young people come to a greater understanding of the need for change in our society. Through YNIA D.C., we will complete four days of direct service, then spend Friday on Capitol Hill, advocating on behalf of those whom we have served all week. Middle school This July 16-20, 2018, our Middle School parishioners will take part in Just5Days, a week-long mission experience of hands-on service work, engaging faith learning, meaningful prayer, community building, and summer fun. We ll be heading to Springfield, MA. Interested in either trip?
