2 Notes from the Office Page 2 Office Closure Please note that the office will be closed on Tuesday, December 25th, and Wednesday, December 26th, for the holidays. Food Disposal Please do not throw food over your balcony, or toss it to the local wildlife. This has and will encourage animals to take up residence in our homes and vehicles, causing much damage. Please dispose all food waste properly down the chute. Floor Decorations Please be mindful that floor decorations are the property of individual floor reps; please leave them up for all to enjoy. Additionally, if you would like to help decorate your floor, please speak to your floor rep before putting up any decorations. We are a community here at DCH and remind you of the VALUES that guide our home: RESPECT We honour the worth and celebrate the uniqueness of each and every person. COMMITMENT We aspire to be exceptional so we expect the best of ourselves and each other; improving by learning, growing and working together. COMPASSION We are caring, patient and kind in our words and actions. WELLBEING We care about each other in mind, body and spirit; deserving of joy, hope, comfort and security in our lives. TEAMWORK We all work together to succeed together. ACCOUNTABILITY We accept responsibility for the people and resources entrusted to us. INTEGRITY We are dedicated to being honest and open with one another. COMMUNITY We delight in service to others and the relationships that make us a caring family.
3 From The Board We are in the final month of 2018 and contemplate the many blessings inherent in the advent season. Let us stand still at this time amidst the secular distractions and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 KJV On researching this familiar text, the commentary by Matthew Henry (MHC) describes with clarity the greatness of who that child was and still is: Justly is he called Wonderful, for he is both God and man. His love is the wonder of angels and glorified saints. He is the Counsellor, for he knew the counsels of God from eternity; and he gives counsel to men, in which he consults our welfare. He is the Wonderful Counsellor; none teaches like him. He is God, the mighty One. Such is the work of the Mediator, that no less power than that of the mighty God could bring it to pass. He is God, one with the Father. As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us to God; he is the Giver of peace in the heart and conscience; and when his kingdom is fully established, men shall learn war no more. The government shall be upon him; he shall bear the burden of it. Glorious things are spoken of Christ's government. There is no end to the increase of its peace, for the happiness of its subjects shall last forever. Thus far, the past year has been a demonstration of God s goodness and mercy. We have made continuous progress since we launched the construction of Glen Hill Terrace Whitby. Residents are closely monitoring the construction. The weather has slowed down construction, but we still anticipate that the contractor will adhere to the stipulated timelines and Glen Hill Terrace construction will be completed in May of In the meantime, the Board Committees have been working behind the scenes. The Leadership Team and the Governance Committee have been reviewing and fine-tuned the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and the Strategic Plan for 2019 to 2021 has been created. Outcomes are reported quarterly by Strategic Plan updates provided at Board meetings. We continue to receive new member applications as interest in Durham Christian Homes continues to grow. The Bowmanville Property Task Force has been meeting and engaging in meaningful discussions with community partners. The Building Committee meets frequently and keeps a very close eye on the construction process. The Fundraising and Marketing Committee continues to work on the Capital Campaign. We are grateful for every donation, large or small. We are asking everyone to remember us in your Christmas giving. Please be reminded that there are tax benefits for donations to charitable organizations, of which Durham Christian Homes in one. The tax year ends on December 31. The wonderful care at our two homes in Bowmanville was recognized at the Long-Term Care Association Conference with an award for Clinical Protocol Excellence being awarded to Glen Hill Strathaven. This is tangible evidence of the stellar quality of the work done in the clinical areas. Congratulations to Kathleen Trickey, RN and our Glen Hill Strathaven Nursing staff! Continued on Page 4. 4 Continued from page 3. Page 4 It was a pleasure to work alongside, and to chat with many residents at the Fall Bazaar. Thank you to the many dedicated volunteers who contributed to the success of this fundraiser for the Residents Council. We look forward to seeing you at the Residents Christmas Dinner, and thank the Resident Council for their gracious invitation. In closing, I would like to request that you remember all the residents, their families, volunteers and staff in your prayers. We remember in prayer all of those in the DCH family who are suffering illness, loss and difficult situations. As a Board, we covet your prayers, that our work and plans for the future will be blessed to God s glory. We wish you all a blessed Christmas and year end. Elizabeth van der Loo Chair, Board of Directors A Christmas Meditation Tiny little King - Why this humble birth? Choosing the hay-filled stall, In reality Lord of all! 5 From Residents Council Well! Here it is the end of the year once again. It is hard to believe that December is upon us, even though we have already had a taste of some winter temperatures this past month. Page 5 On behalf of the residents council, I d like to extend a special Thank You to all who were involved in yet another successful Annual Bazaar. Despite the weather, we were blessed with a great turnout, and together we raised a grand total of $12, Thanks to everyone who helped out during the sale, and also to those who help out behind the scenes. We received a lot of great feedback from people, who commented that they really enjoyed the festive and friendly atmosphere. We thank you for all your hard work and dedication, and we hope to see all of you again at our annual Yard Sale, held on the first Saturday in May, The Residents Council would like to thank Audrey van Ginkel, and Andy Mast for their service as floor reps on the council. Audrey and Andy have both stepped off the council; Jenny Mast will be taking over on Tekoa 8 as floor rep. We also want to extend thanks to all of our floor reps continuing on for another term. We had lots of great fellowship events this past month, and in addition to the regular programs that run weekly, we want to mention a few items that were very enjoyable. On the music scene, the Idle Frets Ukulele band came to visit us; it was music we could all relate to and enjoy. Simon Bax organized an evening of previewing the music of the Martin Mans Formatie, in anticipation of the upcoming Urker Mans Formatie concert on December 3rd. Many were in attendance, and enjoyed the presentation. And, although this publication is due to be out before we can enjoy the music, we are all looking forward to hearing some music from the Island when we host Jay Franco and his Caribbean Carnival concert this Thursday. As we enter into the month of December, we are anticipating many wonderful connections and fellowship opportunities at all of our annual holiday traditions. If you ve recently joined our community, let me extend an extra special invitation to each of you to come join us at all of our upcoming celebrations: Christmas Dinner, musical presentations and Christmas Karaoke, an evening of carols in Dutch and a gathering of carols (in English) by the fire, and so much more! Check your calendars (located at the back of this newsletter) for upcoming dates and times. Finally, on behalf of Residents Council, I bring you greetings for the season, reminding each one to not forget what the reason for this season is - the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. I pray that you each are Blessed with a season and year of peace joy and good health. Merry Christmas one and All. Tina Grootendorst President, Residents Council
