1 The Knight Line St. Ignatius of Loyola Council 12853, Division #4 Holy Family Parish, 4848 Pearl Ave., San Jose, CA Issue 155; December 2018 MERRY CHRISTMAS Editor: Gary Miskimon In memory of our Brother Knights who departed this life in 2018 and the wives, family members and fellow parishioners who left us for the Lord s eternal banquet table. Pray for us as we pray for you until we join you at that table.

2 Worthy Brothers, Grand Knight s Corner It is the Christmas season and I send my Christmas greetings to you and your family. May this be a joyous time for us all. As we near the day of celebration of the birth of our Lord as Savior, I reflect upon the events of the time and things I ve heard and learned, and think about and so will share. As we hear the Christmas Story, Joseph is returning to his ancestral home and cannot find a room at the inn and is forced to bring Mary to a stable. But it is all of Joseph s extended family returning to their family village. And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered, to Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. (Luke 2:1-5). A family reunion which likely filled the home with people leaving no private place for Mary to give birth. In those days the 1 st floor was used to house the animals of the families during winter time to keep them safe. And so, it was to this stable with a manger on the first floor that Joseph brought Mary that she may give birth to our Lord and Savior. ST. 3 Grand Knight s Corner (Cont d) Chaplain s Message Caesar ordered a census in 8 BC, and Cyrenius (Quirinius) became governor in 6 AD but was a consul from 12 BC. Jesus was born during the reign of Herod who died around Spring of 4 BC. Christ was born when shepherds were with their flocks at night, where the angels found them. This occurs in the spring when lambs were being born. So, it seems Christ was likely born between 7 and 5 BC in the spring. There has been much research on the star of Bethlehem. We can now look back and see what was in the sky at the time of the birth of our Savior. Many combinations of planet conjunctions and comets appearing at times and places in the sky are being put forth as the Christmas star. There are celestial events that occurred during this time. The one naturally occurring event that seems to me to best fit the Nativity story is below. From Wikipedia: Some commentators have attempted to establish the date of birth by identifying the Star of Bethlehem with some known astronomical or astrological phenomenon. Astronomer Michael Molnar proposed 17 April 6 BC as the likely date of the Nativity, since that corresponded to the heliacal rising and lunar occultation of Jupiter, while it was momentarily stationary in the constellation of Aries. According to Molnar and knowledgeable astrologers of the time (Magi), this highly unusual combination of events would have indicated that a regal personage would be or had been born in Judea. Interesting pick of the constellation Aries (the ram) on April 17 th, for the birth of the lamb of God. There are other events which may have been the star, such as a triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars occurring around the same time. Or the star may have not been a naturally occurring event. It is fun to research and imagine you can pinpoint the day of His birth. But in truth it doesn t matter what the day was, I think. I m just glad He came to be one of us, and so that we can be forgiven. Merry Christmas to You All, Mark Williams Grand Knight St. Ignatius of Loyola Council #12853 CHRISTMAS is the Time of Giving A few days from now, the whole Christian world will be celebrating the most awaited season of the year, Christmas. It is the commemoration of the birth of JESUS, the Son of God, into the world. Salvation is the primary reason for His coming. The Incarnation took place because God loves us so much and He wants all of us to be with Him. God the Father sent His only begotten son to the world for the salvation of all. In turn, the Son offered Himself on the cross for our redemption. This is the deeper meaning of giving. The giving of the self, and Jesus did it for us from Christmas up to the Cross. The joyful celebration of Christmas is the anticipation of Christ s glorious resurrection on Easter. As Christians, bearers of Christ, we too are called to give. The greatest gift one can offer to Jesus is the self. The perfect offering is a pure and contrite heart, pleasing in the eyes of God. In preparing for this Christmas, be attentive to what Jesus truly needs. I believed not much on things that many people want to accomplish but more on the real and spiritual. Jesus needs a place to stay and He loves to be in our heart. I hope and pray that you will have a blessed and joyful preparation. An advance Merry Christmas to all. Fr. Celso Singson Chaplain December 2018 Page 3 of 10

4 Merry Christmas to Fr. Celso Singson, Chaplain St. Ignatius of Loyola Council #12853 VET S Christmas Shopping? ALL THE TIME SHOPPING??? Fr. Celso Singson is presented with a Travel Mass Kit by Grand Knight Mark Williams at our November Business Meeting. PARISH COAT DRIVE THANKS TO HOLY FAMILY PARISH FOR ITS GREAT RESPONSE TO OUR 6 TH ANNUAL COAT DRIVE! The Knights of Columbus received over 230 coats from Holy Family s parishioners during October and November. All were delivered to Sacred Heart Community Services for distribution before Thanksgiving to those in most need this winter. We also purchased 48 new puff coats for boys and girls. A Special Thank You to the volunteer efforts of Brother Knights and Columbiettes at all the masses and the generosity of our fellow parishioners. An Extra Special Thanks to Brother Jovie Palteng who led the Drive! Campaign For People with Intellectual Difficulties. My appreciation for the many volunteer hours of our Brother Knights and Columbiettes who selflessly volunteered to accept donations following masses as well as serving at the local retailers for community donations! This year we raised nearly $1,100 for the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities. We will be presenting checks to Hope Services and Special Olympics Northern California. NEED 2018 TAX RETURN DEDUCTIONS? Want to get a few extra dollars in deductions before tax filing time in 2019? There are many great charities to consider, some good charities, but also some scams or use very little of your donated money for the purposes wanted. Check the facts on any charity you are considering at: www2.guidestar.org OR If you see allegations on Facebook or the Internet about who is or is not spending properly or who overcompensates their executives, double check them out. Internet claims are commonly efforts to tilt donors towards so-called patriotic charities or away from those associated with someone currently unpopular but some are outright scams, regardless of their wonderful names and claims of doing good. You can ALWAYS donate to the Knights of Columbus Just be sure to specify in what program you want it to be used so it is tax-deductible for you. E.G., Veterans, Wheelchair, Seminarian Scholarships, Intellectual Disabilities. Funds donated to us for normal operations (like dues) aren t deductible.

5 OUR COLUMBIETTES The Value of Life Insurance for Children November brought the Columbiettes to their Fourth Annual Holiday Bunco Night led by Martha Williams. Special guests who joined members and prospective members included Denise Brennan, State Columbiettes Vice President and Libby Davis, President of the St. Anthony Chapter. This social event provided an evening of fun and relaxation as we enter into the upcoming busy holiday season. As a father, one of your greatest worries is protecting your children and their future. One of the smartest and most valuable ways is by purchasing a life insurance policy for each of them. Knights of Columbus Insurance offers a Guaranteed Purchase Option, which ensures that more insurance can be purchased for your children. This option extends far beyond childhood; it guarantees that even as adults, your children will not be denied coverage, even if they suffer from health issues. Life is uncertain and unpredictable; one of every six adults are postponed or denied life insurance coverage, with health denials being the primary reason. Knights of Columbus Insurance protects your children from uncertainty and provides additional peace of mind in the event of the unimaginable or an emergency. With a Knights of Columbus Guaranteed Purchase Option you guarantee that your children can purchase additional Knights of Columbus Life Insurance later in life. Secure your children s future with an insurance premium that, in many cases, is as low as $10 a month. Contact me today to discuss this or any of the other life insurance purchase options for your children. Thank you, Dion D. Dangzalan, F.I.C.F. 6 WE WISH A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MILITARY SERVICES IN DECEMBER, IT IS THE NATIONAL GUARD The military organization known today as the National Guard came into existence by a declaration of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in The Massachusetts General Court established that all able-bodied men aged were required to join the militia. Being part of their small villages meant taking responsibility for defending the settlements of the Colony. The nearby Pequot Indian tribe was an unpredictable neighbor, leaving the Massachusetts colonists vulnerable to guerilla-style attacks on the settlements. Other American locations, such as Florida, Virginia, and (much later) New Mexico provided military protection to allow settlers safe passage and defense against aggressors. Massachusetts was the first to establish a militia but militias of the other colonies didn t remain in continuous service. Massachusetts record of service is unbroken, despite functions of the units changing remarkably over the following 382 years. This distinction qualifies Massachusetts as the birthplace of the militia and National Guard in the United States. Much has changed since 1636, but the National Guard still consists of citizensoldiers (and now the Air Guard) providing protection from disasters and deploying to serve US interests abroad. The National Guard remains a community cornerstone just as it was when it was born on December 13, By Bill Boehm National Guard Bureau (Abbreviated) From Military.com PRAY DAILY FOR OUR PRIESTS AND SEMINARIANS Seminarians not in Pastoral Years are studying at Mundelein Seminary at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois (57 minutes north of downtown Chicago) December 1 Mr. John Hoang, Theology 4 December 2 Rev. 7 The first mass was celebrated on May 15, In 1996 another wing was constructed for the school building, which now houses meeting rooms and space for St. Victor School. PARISH HISTORIES Saint Victor Parish 3108 Sierra Rd. San Jose CA This is the 26 th in an intermittent series on the histories of the 54 parishes and missions of our Diocese. This month we drive 12.8 miles north of Holy Family on CA-87 & I-680 and find: Saint Victor Parish St. Victor Parish was founded in Its territory was originally part of St. Patrick Church, St. John Vianney Church (both in San Jose) and St. John the Baptist Church in Milpitas. The first Mass was celebrated in an old farm house that Mateo and Ann Sunseri made available, a temporary church that served for 17 months. The parish remodeled the farm house and provided 160 seats for the community. The farmhouse lights worked on individual chains and it was understood that parishioners in the front rows would stand and move to the side so that communicants would be able to kneel at the railing. On summer days, early Mass was best and in rainy weather, boots were convenient. It was a simple and homey church in every sense of the word. The rectory was also purchased in 1961 and was used until 1964 when the church bought two properties to house the priests. The original rectory then became the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Corondolet. In 1972, a house was purchased at for use as a rectory, and is now the Parish Office Building. To serve the needs of the growing community a Church Hall was built. Ground was broken in 1978 and the shell was built by a construction company, but the parish did the finishing work, completing it in Calamity struck on April 10, 1980 as a fire swept through the church and burned it to the ground.. The night after the fire, the Parish Council had an emergency meeting and decided to rebuild the church with a Spanish Mission theme. A pledge drive secured funds and ground-breaking took place in PORTOLA ASSEMBLY #49 ACTIVITIES On November 4 th members of Portola Assembly s Patriotic Degree participated in the Pastor Installation and Mass at St. Maria Goretti Church, with Coadjutor Bishop Oscar Cantu as the Celebrant; on Nov 9 th we participated in the Memorial Mass for the Deceased Knights from Bishop O Dowd Council and Portola Assembly at their Santa Maria Hall with Fr.
