1 The Knight Line St. Ignatius of Loyola Council 12853, Division #4 Holy Family Parish, 4848 Pearl Ave., San Jose, CA Issue 152; September 2018 Grand Knight s Corner Editor: Gary Miskimon ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA COUNCIL #12853 Grand Knight Mark Williams markrw50@gmail.com Chaplain Rev. Celso Singson csingson@dsj.org Deputy Grand Knight TBD Brothers, I d like to speak to you about fraternity. It is the first pillar of the Knights of Columbus organization that we all learn in our Admissions degree ceremonial. We are called to reach out to see how our brothers are doing, and then helping when we can. I d like to get more fraternity into our council. While serving as Deputy Grand Knight during the past Columbian year, I was chairman of the Retention committee, which calls brothers to ask about unpaid dues. I was hosting a business meeting, and while asking for an update from the committee we learned that one of our brothers had become afflicted with Alzheimer s disease. He no longer remembered being a Knight, much less paying dues. It seemed that this was the wrong way for us to find out, calling to ask for our dues. This brother had been active in our council, starting the newsletter and acting as our Lecter. We clearly lost track of our brother, John Marks, as he became less involved in our council. 2 Grand Knight s Corner (Cont d) There are brother Knights who believe we can do a better job of being more fraternal to each other and living the promise of fraternity we made to each other during our Admission s degree ceremonial. Jim Lucarotti and Marv Lewis came to me after that business meeting with a determination to not let such a thing happen again. Together we formed a committee we are calling the Fraternal Committee. The first step in this effort is to establish greater communication between us, so that we know when a brother is having an issue, and then to provide help and support as we can. I tell you this as members of the Fraternal Committee will be reaching out to some of you to become part of the team that will talk to members of our council that we ve not seen for a while, to make certain our brothers are well. I ask each of you to pray on this and search your heart and become prepared to help make this happen. It would likely mean making 8-10 phone calls every 5-6 weeks, so the commitment is not very great. Please be open to receiving our calls and becoming part of the team to help make this happen. I ask those members who haven t been active for a while to be receptive to fraternal calls from your brothers. These calls will be to see how you and your family are and to provide help if some is needed. We may also ask for other things, as we have too few active members and need more. But fraternity will always be the primary purpose. Please be prepared to receive these calls in the fraternal spirt in which they are being made. Vivat Jesus! Mark Williams Grand Knight St. Ignatius of Loyola Council #12853 A Special Thank You!!!!! To the brother Knights who helped clean up our storage shed in just a few hours on August 11 th. This handful of Knights cleaned house and then enjoyed a hearty lunch and fraternity with their brother Knights. The Council s thanks go to Chuck Blalock, Tony Franco, David Gomez, Gary Herbst, Jim Lucarotti, Eugene Okafor, Steve Sayle, and Mark Williams. Life Insurance is a Women's Issue As an advisor, I have people to whom I turn for inspiration - those I study outside of my network of Brother Field Agents. One of those people is Tom Hegna. He discusses life insurance as being a women's issue. While many Americans have protested regarding women's issues in past decades, few come forward to advocate for the widow. Here's why Mr. Hegna believes life insurance is a women's issue: 1) Seven of ten baby boom women - those born between 1946 and are expected to outlive their husbands 2) Not only do women have a longer average life expectancy than men, they tend to marry men older than themselves. Thus, many women can expect to be widows for 15, 20 - and possibly - 25 years. For millennial and GenX'ers - this span is even greater. Speak to any widow who is doing well vs. living in financial anxiety, and the difference is life insurance. Widows will need to live with the consequence of the life insurance decisions the men in their lives make - good or bad. This is not to dismiss the need for life insurance on women - women are making more money than ever, and we must look at that as well. However, life insurance on the man in her life will make the difference between her future financial anxiety or financial well-being. For questions, comments or to schedule a visit, please call (408) or visit Thank you, Dion D. Dangzalan, F.I.C.F. 3 Chaplain s Message FAITH is Necessary There are three words attributed to God in the Christian perspective: God is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent (all knowing, all powerful and all present everywhere). God is all powerful and capable of doing anything and everything. He can even create something out of nothing as narrated in the creation of the world in the book of Genesis. In the world, we are confronted by the existence of evil which disrupts peace and harmony in society. Corruptions, injustices and all kinds of immoral actions are vividly clear around us. Many wonder about the existence of God doing nothing in the presence of evil. God loves us and even sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross for us to gain life eternal. If God truly love us, why does He allow these things to happen without doing something to make this world a better place. People then start to complain about the inactivity of God. Do you remember how Jesus healed the woman with hemorrhages for twelve years and doctors couldn t cure her? It happened when Jesus was walking with the disciples and the crowd kept pushing but no power came out from him. They never touched Him with faith. But as soon as the woman came and touched Him, The woman said, If I can only touch his cloak, I shall be healed. (Mt. 9:21) Her flow of blood immediately dried up and she was healed. It was her faith that made the power of Jesus come out. Moreover, did you know that as human as we are, each of us has the power and the capacity to deactivate Jesus in our life. Meaning that Jesus has no power and cannot do anything about what is happening in the world now. Our lack of faith will render the Lord Jesus incapable of doing anything, even if we pray and ask for his help. He cannot do something in our life if we don t believe in Him. The inactivity of Jesus in the world s crisis is not His will but it s our own making by not allowing Him to intervene in our affair. Therefore, if we want Jesus to do something, we need to permit the Lord to come to us by believing in Him. It is only in letting go of our selfish desires and embracing a genuine faith in Jesus in our heart and mind, only then, that the Lord can act and make a difference in our life. Faith is so powerful that Jesus says: If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, be lifted up and thrown into the sea. And it will obey you. (Lk. 17:6) Mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds but if we have a faith as little as that, Jesus can work wonders in our life. We are not anymore doing the action but Christ in us. You only need faith for miracles to happen. Fr. 4 OUR COLUMBIETTES PORTOLA ASSEMBLY #49 ACTIVITIES The Columbiettes were awarded the prestigious Margaret Mary J. Mangan Achievement Award for the third consecutive Columbian Year. In 1993, the Margaret Mary J. Mangan Achievement Award was instituted by the Supreme Council. Margaret Mary was one of the founders of the Columbiettes and the first Supreme Council President. This award, named in her honor, was created to demonstrate her continued love and dedication to the Columbiettes. It is given in recognition of good works performed by an entire auxiliary, not for individual member recognition. On August 10 th, members of Portola Assembly s Patriotic Degree participated in the St. Lawrence the Martyr Feast Day at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church with Fr. Ernesto Orci celebrating; on August 11 th in a Mass and procession for Our Lady of Antipolo at Our Lady of Peace Church celebrated by Fr. Jonathan Dumlao, IVE, and the same day for a Mass & Procession for the 18th Annual Celebration of St. Philomena at Five Wounds Church, celebrated by Fr. Francisco Nahoe, OFC; and at a Funeral Service and Celebration of Life for SK Bill H Winter on August 24 th at St Lucy Church, celebrated by Fr. Mark Arnzen As a relatively new auxiliary, the St. Ignatius of Loyola Columbiettes continue to grow with time. This year, we have added the Volunteer Pew Ministry in the church and sponsorship of a Holy Family Festival booth to our services. Save the Date!! The Columbiettes will be hosting a Mardi Gras party on Saturday, March 2, Plan to join us for this fun and exciting event! Second Collections in September: September 2 nd Bldgs & Grounds September 9 th Community Center/ Youth Hall September 16 th Catholic Education September 16 th St. Vincent de Paul Backpack Drive In August, St. Vincent de Paul hosted a backpack drive for Sacred Heart Community Services annual backpack drive at Holy Family. Your Knights of Columbus donated an additional 15 backpacks directly to Sacred Heart, adding to the total contributions. We purchased & donated backpacks and school supplies to help fill those packs. Sacred Heart s goal was 3,300 filled backpacks for the (too) many low-income children in our area. One very generous Knights of Columbus family donated the entire cost of purchasing the backpacks this year! PGK Don Nordloff prepares to deliver backpack supplies to Sacred Heart. 6 WE WISH A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MILITARY SERVICES Birthdays in September IN SEPTEMBER, IT IS OUR UNITED STATES AIR FORCE The official birthday of the US Air Force is September 18, 1947, but the Air Force's heritage goes back much further. From the first US military aircraft purchase in 1909 until 1947, the Air Force did not exist as an organization. It was called: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); U.S. Army Air Service (1918); U.S. Army Air Corps (1926), U.S. Army Air Forces ( ). Its song remains the Army Air Corps song. World War II was over and the Korean War three years off when the Air Force ended its 40 years with the Army and became a separate service. Airpower became a major element of the nation's defense and one of its chief tools for deterring war. President Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, renaming the Department of War to Department of the Army, merging Army & Navy into the National Military Establishment (NME), and then creating the Air Force. The three became the Department of Defense (DoD), renamed from the NME. The Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of DoD and one of the seven uniformed services. The USAF is one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced air forces. The USAF articulates its core functions as: Nuclear Deterrence Operations; Special Operations; Air Superiority; Global Integrated Intel, Surveillance & Recon; Space Superiority; Command and Control; Cyberspace Superiority; Personnel Recovery; Global Precision Attack; Building Partnerships; Rapid Global Mobility and Agile Combat Support. The Air Force has added to its long history and heritage since achieving its independence. Jerry Lane 9/2 Vince Rubino 9/2 David Brady 9/6 Jerry Mack 9/6 Tom Woznicki 9/8 Fr. In any year, starts on the same day of the week as December but no other month ends on the same day as September Statistics show September is the only month when stock share prices are likelier to fall than rise. Shakespeare did not mention the month of September in any of his plays. PARISH HISTORIES This is the 24 th in an intermittent series on the histories of the 54 parishes and missions of our Diocese. This month we drive 15.7 miles northwest of Holy Family on CA-85, I-280 & Foothill Expressway and find: Saint Simon Parish In 1955 Archbishop John J. Mitty sent Fr. James Spooncer to build a new church. With a shared desire, pioneering families helped him turn an apricot orchard into a parish. They raised the money to form St. Simon Parish and groundbreaking was on April 22,1956 with construction completed in April A convent, rectory and Saint Simon School were added over the next seven years. In 2002 St. Simon s infrastructure had changed little in more than twenty years and set out to revitalize and expand the Parish. In May, 1996 a Parish Center was added. Remodeling of the Church followed and was completed on June 1, Monsignor Andre retired in July, 2002 after 14 years of dedicated service to our community. Fr. Tony Mancuso the Pastor at that time brought to the parish a new set of dynamics, including the introduction of the Dominican sisters of Mission San Jose to add new life to our Adult Ministry as well as our children's ministries. Following the lead of Bishop McGrath's Pastoral Plan, "Renewing the Church" the people of St. Simon facilitated a planning effort including our mission and vision for the future. Currently, there are more than 1,700 families in the parish and St. Simon remains a united, active faith community. Saint Simon Parish 1860 Grant Road Los Altos, CA September 2018 Page 8 of 9
