1 The Knight Line Newsletter for St. Ignatius of Loyola Council Holy Family Parish, 4848 Pearl Ave., San Jose, CA Issue 130; November 2016 Grand Knight s Corner Recently I finished a presentation entitled, Living as a Communion of Saints. An interesting title and, quite frankly, very thought provoking. I was fortunate enough to have two co-presenters, Brother Gil Gruber, and one of our sister Columbiettes and widow of one our departed brothers, Dolores Davis. What a blessing it was working with them. Whenever I prepare for a presentation or paper I am writing I always end up going down research rabbit holes that take me in many different directions. Often they are time consuming but, in most cases, very enlightening. Did you ever wonder how our declared Saints and other famous people accomplished so much in such a short period of time? For example, St. Thomas Aquinas lived for only forty-nine years; St. Ignatius of Loyola lived for sixty-five years but was only a priest for nineteen of those years. Martin Luther King lived for thirty-nine years. Father Michael McGivney, our founder, lived for only thirty-eight years. November Trivia: Odd trivia this month? Check throughout this newsletter. 2 Grand Knight s Corner (Cont d) Chaplain s Message For all of us, time is truly a gift from our Lord, but do we stop and give thanks for the time we have? Each of us has about waking hours daily, but what we do with it is our free choice. We cannot stop time, but it contains only the memories, accomplishments, and value we add. In our daily decisions on how to spend our time, do we ensure we spend time wisely, creating memories to define us as a person and to be valuable to those we touch daily? When you stop and think about it, this is not an easy task, is it? We are never alone in facing this task. We have guidance from our Lord to use as our compass; Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. These commandments suggest that our prayer time is very important. Prayer in thanksgiving but also in seeking and listening for guidance for our lives and use of time. The time we spend with family members, colleagues and community members in meaningful, servant, loving relationships is very important. You may come to the same conclusion as I, that this takes a lot of self-discipline with so many distractions in our lives. Interestingly, Dr. Scott Peck in, The Road Less Traveled, stated the energy for the work of self-discipline derives from love... It follows then, not only that self-discipline is usually love, translated into action, but also that any genuine lover behaves with self-discipline and any genuinely loving relationship is a disciplined relationship. Using time wisely is a lifelong disciplined journey. Taking time to be thankful to our Lord, who walks with us, for the time we have, is part of that journey. Time is too precious to waste. Thank you brothers, for the time you devote to our organization and to our church and community. As I looked around our parish community this past Sunday for the celebration of the Family and also for the many events we sponsor and support, I see all of you, in the choir, in liturgical programs, as ministers, as servants of our Lord, all in many roles. I am in awe at how disciplined you are in giving your time and love. As Saint Paul addresses in his letters, you are Holy Ones. You are truly living saints, an integral part of the Communion of Saints. Thank you and may the peace of our Lord be with you, We are all in constant need of God s mercy and love. As Christians who are in a relationship with God, prayer is so important. Without it, our relationship with God dies too. You may recall that, in one of the gospel periscopes the disciples of the Lord asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, and in response, Jesus taught them the Lord s Prayer. In Luke 18, 9-14 Jesus spoke again about prayer, albeit in the form of parable. In this gospel text, the Lord clarified what prayer is and what prayer is not. The Pharisee, in his prayer glorified himself before God in the temple. He said, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity, greedy, dishonest, adulterous or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income. Obviously, the Pharisee approached God so full of himself and so he prayed at the expense of others. November Trivia: November comes from the Latin word Novem meaning nine thus the 9th month of the Roman calendar (at that time)! Novena? The feminine form of Novem thus 9 days of prayers or services. Len Piazzon Grand Knight St. Ignatius of Loyola Council #12853 Sep 2016 Page 2 of 10

3 Humility and meekness of heart are two important inner dispositions when praying. It is not the time to pretend to be who we are not. After all, God knows the deepest recesses of our beings. God sees through us, and there is nothing that we can hide from Him. As such, we cannot buy the illusion that we are better than the rest of humanity when we are face to face with God in the context of prayer. In other words, boasting about our accomplishments before God would not please Him, as epitomized by the arrogant Pharisee. And needless to say, God despises the arrogant and proud and is pleased with the humble. The Tax Collector in the gospel of Luke was exalted not because of his being a sinner, but because of his humility and humble disposition before God when he prayed. Besides, the Tax Collector did not ask anything for himself and did not glorify himself either. Instead, in humble bodily and mental dispositions, he said: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Indeed, in the eyes of God, we are all transgressors and we cannot have illusions that we are not. We are all in constant need of God s mercy and love. And so, it is good to once again examine and ask ourselves the following questions: (1) How do I pray? (2) What is my inner disposition when I pray? (3) Am I like the Pharisee or the Tax Collector when I pray? God s blessings to you and your family always! Family Mass Knights, Columbiettes and family members filled many of the liturgical ministry positions at our annual Family Mass this year on October 9 th. Our Chaplain, Fr. Edsil was the celebrant and he recognized the services the Knights have provided to the parish in many areas. Br. Gary Herbst arranged most of the mass activities as well as the liturgical services of our Brother Knights, family members and Columbiettes in the many ministries required for a successful mass. Grand Knight Len Piazzon presented the scholarship awards. A reception celebration followed the family mass with many parishioners, Knights and families congratulating our RSVP recipients from St. Patrick s University and Seminary. Bro. Paul Jussen, the 6 th recipient, received his award in Massachusetts during his ordination as a transitional deacon. 4 OUR COLUMBIETTES We installed new members at a First Degree Installation Ceremony held at our general meeting on October 27 th. Our membership continues to grow and we are happy to have these new members in our group. Also at this meeting, a spiritual reflection was held called "tears for the world." It gave us an opportunity to release our frustration about things we cannot change and then express our helplessness. We ultimately find release and catharsis concerning these things and then are able to direct our energy and love to situations in our life about which we do have influence.. ***************************** There will be no regular meeting of the Columbiettes in November. However, on November 17 th, the Columbiettes are holding their second annual Bunco evening. It is planned as an opportunity for the current Columbiette membership as well as all pending Columbiette candidates to get to know their fellow Columbiettes and to enjoy an evening of fun and relaxation as we begin to prepare for the busy holidays ahead. ***************************** Birthdays in November PARISH HISTORIES This is the ninth in an intermittent series on the histories of the 54 parishes and missions of our Diocese. This month we drive only 5.8 miles north northeast of Holy Family on Capital Expressway/McLaughlin to Tully Road into east San Jose (near downtown) where we find: Our Lady of Refuge Church Remember the Capital Campaign conducted in 2006 at the 25 th anniversary of the San Jose Diocese? The purchase of a church and adjoining buildings in East San Jose was made possible by funds generated from that Capital Campaign and the creation of the Catholic Foundation of Santa Clara County. This parish, the first established in the Diocese in over a decade, was dedicated as Our Lady of Refuge Parish on February 19, 2012 The Diocese of San Jose Finance Council and the College of Consultors gave unanimous approval to the purchase of a church and adjoining buildings on Lucretia Avenue in San Jose. It had been over a decade since the Diocese last established a parish. Demographic studies and the 2010 Census confirmed that the anticipated population increase that was foreseen in our Pastoral Plan continues. Rev. The area for the new parish had been served for 20 years by the Santee Mission and supported by St. Maria Goretti Parish. Until the parish was established they had been renting a school auditorium for a single Mass on Sunday that was able to serve only 350 people in this densely populated area. The Lancaster family is involved in many activities within the Knights and the parish. Tom is an active Brother Knight and his wife, Sherrlyn, assists in our Blood Drives in addition to serving with Tom as Hospitality Ministers. Tom and his son, Nicholas, are both current members of St. Ignatius of Loyola Council. As the nominator wrote: They are just an all around solid family. Our Past Grand Knight (PGK) Toby Laufer was recognized as the Knight of the Month for September. We see Brother Toby at virtually every Council activity, helping with set-up, tending bar, chairing the New Year s Eve Dinner/Dance or St. Patrick s Day Dinner. Past Grand Knight Toby is a relentless supporter of the church and our efforts to support our pastor and parish. PGK Toby Laufer receives the Knight of the Month award from Grand Knight Len Piazzon Will 2016 have a November that includes the 10 th or even an 11 th World Series game? 6 WE WISH A HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MILITARY SERVICES PARISH COAT DRIVE The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring our Fourth Annual Coat Drive following all masses on the weekends of Oct. 30, Nov. 6 and 13. Coats will be provided to Sacred Heart Ministries, which will distribute them to San Jose homeless men, women and children in need of warm clothing for the coming winter months. We are asking parishioners and families to join us in donating new and very gently used coats on these weekends. Knights and their families will be outside the Church to accept donations on those weekends. Our Council has already purchased 48 new coats for girls and boys as part of the Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids campaign. Our Grand Knight and other members will be at Sacred Heart to help distribute these to the youngsters of our city. GREAT REASONS TO PARTICIPATE: You can help people in need to stay warm throughout winter. You can be more involved with this invaluable local charity. You can get together with neighbors and help people recycle new and very gently used coats they aren t using from their homes. Parents or grandparents can work with their children and grandchildren to show them how to give back to their community. You can help clothe those in need, who lack basic shelter from the weather and the security that includes. WHO CAN DO THIS?!!! Everyone!!! IN NOVEMBER, IT IS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS On November 10, 1775, only five months after establishing the Army, the Continental Congress established two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore, marking the official formation of the Continental Marines." Two battalions of were formed in Philadelphia as an infantry force and the 1st Commandant was Major Samuel Nicholas. The modern Marine Corps (USMC) provides power projection from the sea, using the mobility of the U.S. Navy to deliver combined-arms task forces. The Marine Corps is one of the four branches in the Department of Defense and is one of the seven USA uniformed services. (By precedence: Army, USMC, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.) The Marine Corps has been a component of the Navy since 1834, working closely for training, transport, and logistics. The USMC operates posts around the world, and several Marine aviation squadrons are embedded in Navy carrier wings. The role of the USMC has grown and evolved, expanding to aerial warfare and earning popularized titles as "America's third air force" and "second land army". The Marine Corps has distinguished itself serving in the majority of American wars, from pre-independence to today. By the mid-20th century, the Marine Corps became a major theorist and the dominant practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its rapid response to short notice & expeditionary crises gives it a strong role in the execution of American foreign policy. The USMC had around 191,000 active duty members and under 40,000 reservists as of 2014, the smallest of the four Department of Defense components. Sep 2016 Page 6 of 10

7 !! OMG!! TIS THE SEASON TO FALL BACK?? On this coming Sunday morning (Nov 6 th ), at about 2:00 a.m., Pacific Daylight Saving Time occurs. This is your advance and only warning from your Council to take all necessary defensive actions. November 6 th, the first of many progressively darker and gloomier Sunday's this Fall, has been designated by the Federal Government (aka "nattering nabobs of negativity") as the biannual celebration of the fact that omnipotent bureaucrats are able to change the actuality of time, if not its essence or nature, at their whim. You average citizens must not attempt to do the same at home, as this is not something that should be done except by professionals who are skilled in maintaining a century-old system that tries to convince people they are 'saving' Daylight. Mayhap in a special vault so that in the dark days of a coming Ice Age we can spring it open and return to the idyllic sunshine our forebears experienced? Nay - 'tis merely the transference of the hour from one end of our day to the other end. A sleight of hand that takes us a month of adjustment until we can handle our savings. No excuses will be accepted for anyone arriving late for mass on Sunday, November 6 th or late to work the next day - November 7 th - claiming that their watch had the wrong time. If you wake up and its pitch black, its time to go to Mass (unless it s Monday and you should already be at work!) Phase One: Before you leave work on Friday the 4 th, change the time on your Laughing Elmo Cubicle Clock. Unknown but highly appreciated experts at your workplace will change the time on those file servers that are hidden from the view of us muggles so that our and voice mail "time stamps" provide indicators of the true times our messages were received. We should take time this year to seriously consider waking up at 2:01 a.m. on Sunday morning and calling our office phones just to see if it records the correct time. ("1:01") If it states the wrong time when you arrive on Monday ("2:01 a.m."), you will have affirmed that one or more of the time gurus for your office were on vacation (or forgot to change their own watch). Phase Two: "Home implementation." You should change the time on all of your home appliances prior to retiring on Saturday night. The clock on the stove, kitchen wall, living room wall, the grandfather clock in the hall, the kids' Transformer clocks, the three watches in your dresser drawer whose batteries expired before we even 'sprang forward,' the DVR clock, and most importantly, the clock in your mid-life crisis 'zoom zoom' car in which you only REALLY fit if you are 5' 4" pounds - and 27 years old. (The rest of you - get back in your Buicks.) Phase Three: SERIOUSLY -- buy new batteries and replace those in every smoke/fire detector in your homes. Unless you don't have any detectors, in which case, no parties or family gatherings should be allowed at your place!. Phase Four: Is the obvious "Oliver Stone" connection of this time tinkering to elections following in a scant two days coincidence? I think not! We did NOT allow this to happen before the elections in Afghanistan and or in Iraq, so it is clear to every conspiracy patriot that this supposedly innocuous time change is actually intended to give partisan advantage in next Tuesday's elections. I will be proven accurate yet again when the partisan party wins on Tuesday, as I have been predicting for many years. Will 2016 have a November that includes the 10 th or even an 11 th World Series game? There have been only nine games played all or in part in the month of November. The 2016 schedule has (possible) the 10 th and 11 th games (at Cleveland) this year. (Games 6 & 7) Sep 2016 Page 7 of 10

The 2 nd was in 1598 in Texas as Don Juan de Onate asked the friars to say a Mass of Thanksgiving. (After mass he claimed the lands north of the Rio Grande for Spain.) The anti- Catholic Calvinist pilgrims in Massachusetts celebrated theirs in We all know that Thanksgiving in Greek is Eucharistia, the Body & Blood of Christ, the true thanksgiving meal.
