High School Lock-In: Dec. 2 nd - 3 rd 4 Dear Parishioners, Save-the-Date for the First Annual Corpus Christi October 18, 2016 On behalf of all the volunteers of Corpus Christi Saint Vincent de Paul, we want to thank you for your generous support during fiscal year With your help during this period, we were able to assist 1,290 adults and children with partial rental for 127 families and utilities for 101 families, thereby keeping a roof over their heads with electricity and water flowing. In addition, we were able to distribute 505 boxes of food mostly from your donations. Consider that a food box has a store shelf value of $70 and provides a week of meals for two people. This represents that your donations, net of what we purchased, provided over $34,000 worth of food for those in need. Another activity is the Giving Tree that provided over 950 gifts to the needy at Christmas time. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar in donations is being spent for the needy. We have accomplished this with the help of over 4,500 hours of time donated by our parish members. Words are inadequate to express our gratitude for the support the parish has given in the previous year and hope we can count on you in the future. God bless all of you. On behalf of all at SVdP R. 5 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time NOVEMBER: LOADED WITH BLESSINGS Everyone is encouraged to pause and consider how the Greek root of the term "Catholic" (meaning "universal") applies to the following days of observances. The religious, patriotic, and appreciation celebrations of November are true testimonies to American Catholics devotion to God and country. We are blessed with great freedoms that we too often take for granted. We must remain vigilant, remembering that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE! All Saints Day (Nov. 1 st ) All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. All Souls Day (Nov. 2 nd ) Often overshadowed by Halloween and All Saints Day, All Souls Day is a solemn celebration in the Roman Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and now are in Purgatory. ELECTION DAY (Nov. 8 th ) is the day in the United States set by law for the general elections of public officials. The Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides for the right of citizens to vote. VETERANS DAY (Nov. 11 th ) is an official United States public holiday, observed annually that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. Many communities host Veterans Day parades in respect for the men and women who served our country. THANKSGIVING (Nov. 24 th ) In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly traced to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. That Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. PUBLIC NOTICE: FALL BLOOD DRIVE IS NOVEMBER 13 TH The aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, from the islands in the South Atlantic to the eastern coast of the United States, has resulted in a tremendous need for blood. Your timely donation will go a long way in restoring health and life to those who desperately need blood. Think of your donation as a gift from the treasury God has given you. Our next Blood Drive is Sunday, November 13 th in the Parish Center from 7:30 am 12:30 pm. Please consider being a hero with a donation of a unit of blood that may save up to three lives. Thank you! 5 Saint Gerard Circle sgcinfo.98@gmail.com October 30, 2016 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. Matthew 18:20 JOIN US IN PRAYER with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding the upcoming Presidential Election: Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/ state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Whether it lasts for a brief moment or for a hundred years, each of our lives is a good and perfect gift. At every stage and in every circumstance, we are held in existence by God s love. Our relationships on earth are meant to help us and others grow in perfect love. We are meant to depend on one another, serve each other in humility, and walk together in times of suffering. An elderly man whose health is quickly deteriorating; an unborn baby girl whose diagnosis indicates she may not live very long; a little boy with Down Syndrome; a mother facing terminal cancer each may have great difficulties and need assistance, but each of their lives is a good and perfect gift. Experiencing suffering or watching another suffer is one of the hardest human experiences. But we are not alone. Christ experienced suffering more deeply than we can comprehend, and our own suffering can be meaningful when we unite it with his. Jesus is with us every step of the way, giving us the grace we need. God invites us to embrace the lives we have been given, for as long as they are given. Every life is worth living. The Jubilee Year of Mercy Dec.8, Nov. 20, 2016 The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, The Gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God s mercy to sinners, (1846). Where this sentence occurs is crucial: under Life in Christ, on the moral life; in chapter one, The Dignity of the Human Person; and in the first article of the last chapter, Sin. In other words, it is only in Jesus Christ that we truly understand what the dignity of the human person is. And sin is a reality in human life not the first reality, but the last. God did not create us in sin or guilt. Evil is not part of our nature, or nature itself. Free choice brought about evil, and free choice can reject it, as God has revealed in the Gospel. God s mercy is revealed in Christ to sinners: far from being abstract, that statement tells us that mercy is like a lighthouse seen by a lost sailor, like a strong hand reached out to one about to fall, like a word of hope to one on the brink of despair. True mercy also has another dimension: surprise. We may not expect mercy, and surely we may not demand it. The revelation of mercy is a surprise in the profoundest sense of that term: grace beyond imagining, deliverance that I could not merit, joy that can never turn to sorrow. Ponder it: mercy as joyful surprise. - Father Joseph T. Lienhard, S.J. 7

8 Corpus Christi Catholic Church Feasts of the Week Tuesday, November 1 st : ALL SAINTS (A Holy Day of Obligation-see pg. 2 for Mass times). First mentioned in the 4 th c. Eastern feast of All Martyrs and attested to by St. Ephrem of Edessa, this feast came to be celebrated on other days as well in the East, e.g., Easter Friday, and the Sunday after Pentecost, the day of its observance in some places in the West. In 609 or 610, the Roman Pantheon was dedicated on May 13 th under the title S. Maria ad Martyres. Many see in this the origin of All Saints Day. For reasons which are unclear, Pope Gregory IV transferred the feast from May to November 1 st, adopting perhaps the English-Gallican practice dating from the first quarter of the 8 th c. Wednesday, November 2 nd : COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS DAY) Rooted in ancient Christian tradition (2 nd c. and Tertullian), St. Odilo of Cluny established a memorial of all the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome in the 13 th c. Thursday, November 3 rd : Martin de Porres, 1639; born in Lima of a Spanish father and a black slave mother; O.P. lay brother who humbly ministered to the poor and sick, especially African slaves; devoted to the Holy Eucharist; a close friend of St. Rose of Lima; patron of social justice and of people of mixed races. Friday, November 4 th : Charles Borromeo, November 3, 1584 at age forty-six; cardinal and secretary of state at age twenty-two for his uncle, Pope Pius IV; implemented reforms of Trent in his diocese of Milan; founder of seminaries; considered a model pastor by many bishops, including Francis de Sales; held five provincial councils and eleven diocesan synods; patron of catechists and of catechumens. How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. Adult children, 18 +, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors. Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as Last Rites, waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
