You can sign-up for Online Giving through our parish website at Frequently Asked Questions How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. Adults 18and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors. In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as Last Rites, waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

4 Corpus Christi Catholic Church What Was the Reformation and Why Did it Happen Part 4: The Rise of Individualism By Ken Hensley, from The Coming Home Network International With the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation coming in October of this year, in this series of articles we ve been asking two essential questions: First, boiled down to its essence, what was the Reformation? And then second, why did the Reformation happen at that precise moment in the history of Christianity? In terms of the first question, we ve seen that the Reformation was not about the creation of a new religion. Luther, Calvin, Zwingli and the other Reformers never saw themselves as teaching anything other than the Christianity of the Apostles and the early Church. Nor was the Reformation merely about certain Catholic theologians coming to disagree with the Church on certain doctrinal issues, although it seems to have begun this way. No. At its heart, the Reformation was a reaction against, and ultimately the rejection of, the very idea that Christ had established, and that there existed on earth, a united spiritual authority. It was a rejection of the spiritual authority of the Catholic Church. Why did it happen at the time it happened? There were a number of factors. In Part 2, we looked at the invention of the printing press and the cultural revolution it brought about in the decades leading up the Reformation. Imagine the changes this would naturally bring about in a society. For the first time in history, printed materials became available to the masses. With this came a dramatic increase in the number of people who could read and would naturally want to interact more critically with what they were being taught. With this as well came an explosion of new theological ideas expressed in a myriad of inexpensive pamphlets and books making the case for these new ideas. Finally, with this came a dramatic increase in 4 the number of colleges and universities and theological faculties in which these new ideas could be batted around, debated, and disseminated. In Part 3, we looked at the simultaneous rise of a humanist educational philosophy sweeping the universities in the early 16 th century. The humanists disliked and even mocked the scholastic theology being done by the great theologians and doctors of the Church at that time (including St. Thomas Aquinas) and called for a return to the pure study of Scripture and the Church Fathers. When you add these factors together, it isn t hard to see how an atmosphere of independence from the authority of the Church might develop. But there s more. Individualism in Religion In 1503, the humanist priest Erasmus published a book titled Enchiridion, or Handbook of the Christian Soldier. The book emphasized the need for Christians to have a personal faith in Christ and to nourish that faith by the personal reading of Scripture. It also promoted the renewal of the Church through a return to the focused study of Scripture and the Fathers. Guess what? Erasmus book was an instant runaway hit. It went through 23 editions in its first six years alone. It was being devoured throughout Catholic Europe. And of course Erasmus was right in insisting that our relationship with Christ ought to be intimate and personal. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that we are called to a vital and personal relationship with the living

5 The Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017 and true God (paragraph 2558). When we talk about putting our trust in the living God, we re talking about the commitment of mind, emotion, and will. Faith must be inward and personal. And as Alister McGrath notes in his excellent biography, A Life of John Calvin, these ideas were spreading everywhere at the time and weren t in any sense considered heretical. In Italy, the movement often known as Catholic evangelicalism with its stress on the question of personal salvation, became firmly established within the church, even penetrating deeply within its hierarchy, without being regarded as in any way heretical. (page 7) In other words, as with the other points we ve looked at so far, the new appreciation for the individual rising out of the Italian Renaissance had a positive side to it. Just think of the masterpieces of Renaissance art with its focus on the individual, the person. Take a look at the statues of Michelangelo, or the paintings of Raphael, Caravaggio, and Leonardo da Vinci. The Rise of Nationalism Now, this trend toward individualism in the decades leading up to the Reformation didn t express itself merely in an emphasis on religion as something intimate and personal. The fact is, at the time, throughout Catholic Europe, there was an increasingly strong spirit of resentment felt toward centralized authority of all kinds: the authority of the Church and the authority of the empire as well. With respect to the Church, anti-clericalism was rampant. With respect to the empire, nationalism was on the rise. For instance, in Germany, McGrath tells us: Intense resentment was felt against the pope. In part, this reflected an incipient German nationalism, marked by a 5 resentment of all things Italian. It also reflected popular irritation at the fact that ecclesiastical revenues (including the proceeds of indulgence sales) were destined for Rome, and the maintenance of the somewhat extravagant lifestyles, building programs and political adventures of the Renaissance popes In many ways, Luther s reforming program made an appeal to (perhaps even to the point of a crude exploitation of) German nationalism and anti-papalism, allowing the Reformation to ride on the crest of a wave of popular anti-papal sentiment. (Calvin, page 13) Conclusion Read again that last sentence. McGrath, a world-class Protestant theologian, is suggesting that Luther s program of reform in many ways exploited an atmosphere of nationalism and anti-papalism already in existence at the time. The Reformation was able to ride on the crest of a wave of popular anti-papal sentiment. In other words, along with all the other factors we ve discussed so far, the very idea of centralized authority was being rejected at the time. Individualism in religion was on the rise, and so was the individualism of nations. Christendom was beginning to break apart. And this is key: it wasn t simply because of all the new ideas in the wind. The resentment that was felt toward the Catholic Church was to a significant degree the fault of the Catholic leadership. The St. Vincent de Paul Annual Water Drive is in progress. You can leave your donations of bottled water in the church vestibule. If it is more convenient, you may place a monetary donation in the Water Drive box and the funds will be put towards purchasing water. Thank you for your support! May peace be with you! Dear Parishioners, ********* On behalf of all the volunteers of Corpus Christi Saint Vincent de Paul, we want to thank you for your generous donations during the past nine months. With your help during this period, we were able to assist 627 adults and children with partial rental for 69 families and utilities for 95 families, thereby keeping a roof over their heads with water and electricity flowing. Our contributions for these two items alone amounted to over $42,000. In addition, we were able to distribute 223 boxes of food mostly from your donations. The current store value for a food box is $70 and provides a week of meals for two people. This means that all donations of food, net of what was purchased, contributed roughly $15,500 worth of food for those in need. Our dedicated volunteers have contributed roughly 3,400 hours in support of the various activities, fund raising and aiding the needy. For the first time, four highly qualified high school seniors were each awarded $ scholarships. Historically, only two scholarships are awarded each fraternal year; rarely three students have received these grants, but this is the first occasion that four applicants were genuinely worthy. As a result, the Council decided to award all four candidates with the coveted prize. This is highly unusual, but we felt all the applicants are truly worthy of being recognized for their academic achievements as well as for their practice of their Catholic faith. It was a tough decision, but after careful consideration and consultation with Program Director Doug Vance and the Council leadership team, including several Past Grand Knights, it is decided all four applicants deserve to receive the scholarships, said Grand Knight Bob LaCroix. Those receiving the K of C Sal Scordato Scholarship awards include: Zach Abeln, son of Rob and Lisa Abeln. Zach will attend Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas. Shelby Gerston, daughter of David and Jennifer Gerston, will pursue studies at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. Catherine Waypa will concentrate on studies at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona. Catherine is the daughter of Mark and Jane Waypa. Danielle Goodman, the daughter of Tom and Cindy Goodman plans to attend the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. 8 Corpus Christi Catholic Church C N! Elementary Catholic Education Classes begin September 5 th & 6 th! As we approach the beginning of the school year, there is still a great need for catechists to teach our little ones! For classes to begin on time, we need catechists for these grade levels: Wednesdays: 2:25 pm session for ALL grade levels from 2 nd -4 th Catechist in-service training is given and the catechist manual is very easy to follow. Additional resources are available to you through the C.E. Office. Prayerfully consider giving of your time and talent for our children. Please call the CE Office at for any additional information. Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) Do you like working with younger children? Can you share your faith with the children of our parish? If you answered YES then you would enjoy getting involved in this children s ministry. Based upon the number of volunteers we receive, each volunteer may only be needed twice during the year. High school students in need of service hours are welcome to assist the adult volunteers. Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) serves children beginning at age four through the third grade when they receive their First Communion. This is a time to engage young minds and hearts during Mass as the children are invited to hear God s word and participate in the Liturgy in a way they can more easily understand. Initially, CLOW will take place during the 8:30 am Mass once a month from October through May. After the opening prayer at Mass, the children are invited to come forward with an adult Prayer Leader and go to the Parish Center to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word. Volunteers and aides are needed to lead the children through the readings and prayers. Children will rejoin their families in church after the Prayers of the Faithful for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. C E 8 One Catechist s Story of Answering the Call After reading Matthew Kelly's book, Dynamic Catholic, I realized that I was not doing enough for my faith to grow, for my parish, and to serve the Lord. I realized giving Sunday offerings was not enough. To be truly generous, I had to be generous with my time and with my talents. I realized too that I wasn't doing my part in evangelizing. I prayed and asked the Lord how I could serve him. He answered quickly. Believe me, it was quick and it was relentless! The Lord made me realize the gifts He has given me and to use those to serve Him. I know I love working with kids but it has only been working with kids with special needs. I am very patient, a must in my job. But, still I was fearful to answer the call to teach. Fortunately, my desire to serve the Lord was greater and I made it work. He blesses me each and every day. I want to thank Him and I want to bring people closer to Him, to get to know Him and know his love for them. Being a catechist gives me the opportunity to both bring the kids closer to the Lord as well as their families and evangelize at the same time! With the help of the Holy Spirit, I took the leap of faith and answered the call to teach. How can I go wrong with the Lord beside me? Surely, He will only bless me as I do his work! It has been four years and it has been a walk with the Holy Spirit! The Spirit gave me the courage to speak, teach, and evangelize, wisdom to know what to teach and how to teach, patience with the children, faith to let the Holy Spirit take the lead in my classes, and the joy to serve the Lord. I would have been lost without the help of the Holy Spirit, the guidance of Denise and other catechists who were all so helpful and generous with their ideas and activities. I have been so blessed to have been able to teach 4th grade, Special Needs, and now 3rd grade this upcoming year! Teaching has brought me joy, especially every time the kids were all eager to lead prayers in class, or excited to learn about their faith, or when parents asked if they can join class too to learn! Teaching has fed my soul and has deepened my faith and relationship with the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Sure, I lost a few hours of my personal time in teaching, but what I gained has been so much more! Would you consider being generous with your time and talents too? Would you consider serving the Lord? Would you help in bringing all these kids and their families to heaven? Would you consider answering the call to teach? Please prayerfully consider the call!
