1 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor VOLUME 25, ISSUE 10 NOVEMBER 2011 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: As I write this I am getting ready to have lung surgery on Oct. 18 th. I want to thank you all for your prayers and support. They mean so very much to Penny and me. We are very blessed to be part of this caring congregation. I also want to thank everyone who will be helping to fill in for me while I am recovering. We have many gifted and dedicated members who give generously of their time and talents. Sunday, November 6, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday. It is a wonderful reminder of God s faithfulness and blessing through all of life, and of the communion we share with all God s people through all the ages. We will especially remember those who have passed through death to eternal life since last All Saints Sunday Brett Wehrs, Forest Johnson, Lorene Norem, Jack Briggs, Marion Brue, Otto Olson, Edie Weeks, and Therese Hachmann. We also remember and celebrate those who have been baptized in the past year in our congregation Lyndee Anderson, Joseph Somma, Harper Gillman, Kaitlin Wehrs, Tristan & Lillian Meszaros, Samantha Downs, Luke Englehart, Colt Jones, Ava & Benjamin Hastert, Anna Wennmacher, Meko Torres, and Addyson Satterfield. Be sure to remember to set your clocks back an hour Saturday night, November 5, before you go to bed, so you can be well rested and energized when you come to worship Sunday morning. November is a time for Thanksgiving. As disciples of Christ we are called to live with deep gratitude, recognizing that all Pastor s Corner that we are and all that we have are God s gifts to us. Even in times of turmoil, uncertainty and suffering, we still have so much to give thanks for. Thanksgiving should be so much more than a holiday for us, it should be our way of life. Let me encourage you to pick up the With One Voice hymnal in the pew some time this month (hopefully not during the sermon) and carefully read the words of hymn #778 O Christ the Same. This beautiful hymn speaks powerfully of giving thanks for all of life past, present and future. This year we will again celebrate Thanksgiving with our brothers and sisters in Christ at First Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church of Plano. This year it is our turn to have everyone over for our Thanksgiving meal of Holy Communion. One of the names for Holy Communion is the Eucharist which comes from the Greek word for He gave thanks, referring to Jesus taking the bread and cup and giving thanks to God. We will gather on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7 p.m. Please join us! The Kendall County PADS program is starting up for another year. Several members of our congregation have volunteered, but the program is still looking for more volunteers. If you are interested or have questions, please contact the church office. The 1 st Sunday of Advent will be Sunday November 27 th. Join us as we begin our Advent journey to Bethlehem and the manger. We are thrilled to have her back in our congregation. We want to thank all the members of First Lutheran for their continued prayers for Marty this past year! We believe in the power of prayer and have seen first hand, what prayer can do! Marty is a living miracle of God s healing power. We are celebrating 40 years of marriage on October 23 rd, and this event was made possible by the Lord hearing our prayers. Thank you to the prayer chain members, who take time to do this for others in need. May the Lord Bless each of you! 3 T HE ANCHOR PAGE 3 NOVEMBER LIBRARY NEWS This month there are a variety of biographies displayed in our library. You can read about political figures such as Laura Bush by Roland Kessler, and Jimmy Carter in The Carpenter s Apprentice by Dan Arial. This spiritual biography traces the former president from his beginnings in rural Georgia through his presidency and to his current work with Habitat for Humanity. God in My Corner by George Foreman is an autobiography by the former heavyweight boxing champion (and promoter of the Foreman Grill). You have probably seen Jane Goodall on TV. There have been many documentaries about her work with chimpanzees in Tanzania. Her autobiography is titled Reason For Hope. New in our library is a wonderful book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Most of us know him as a Nazi protester in Germany. However this pastor was much more. An accomplished writer, his books are still studied and considered Christian classics. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Phophet, Spy: A Righteous Gentile Vs. The Third Reich is written by New York Times best -selling author, Eric Metaras. First Lutheran collecting $$$ for Plano Rockin Christmas The Plano Rockin Christmas committee is accepting monetary donations to be used to purchase items to create for Food Baskets for Needy Families in the area. Plano Rockin Christmas festivities will be held Friday, Dec. 2 nd and Saturday, Dec. 3 rd. On Sunday, Dec. 4 th, the food baskets will be delivered to needy families in the Plano Community. The First Lutheran Church Social Concerns Committee is helping with this project. Beginning Oct. 30 th thru Nov. 20 th the First Lutheran Church is accepting monetary donations. Please make your check out to First Lutheran Church and mark it Plano Rockin Christmas. Please do this no later than Nov. 20 th. This way your donation will be included in your church offering record at the end of the year. Baby Items Collection Nov 27 th through Dec 18 th, in honor of the Baby Jesus we will be collecting baby items for St. Nicholas Day (Dec 6 th ). Saint Nicholas Day celebrates the life of Saint Nicholas of Myra, a fourth-century bishop and the model for Santa Claus. The celebration of St Nicholas on Dec. 6th continues in many places, and some cultures still choose to use this occasion to give gifts to children. Keep St. Nicholas Day in mind while shopping this Christmas season. In general we will be collecting: Clothing Hats Blankets Sleepers Diapers Baby Food and Formula (check expiration dates) Baby shampoo, soap, powder Baby fingernail clippers NOTE: We will NOT accept toys or large items.

A Thanksgiving Day Prayer Lord, so often times, as any other day When we sit down to our meal and pray We hurry along and make fast the blessing Thanks, amen. Now please pass the dressing We're slaves to the olfactory overload We must rush our prayer before the food gets cold But Lord, I'd like to take a few minute more To really give thanks to what I'm thankful for For my family, my health, a nice soft bed My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head I'm thankful right now to be surrounded by those Whose lives touch me more than they'll ever possibly know Thankful Lord, that You've blessed me beyond measure Thankful that in my heart lives life's greatest treasure That You, dear Jesus, reside in that place And I'm ever so grateful for Your unending grace So please, heavenly Father, bless this food You've provided And bless each and every person invited --Scott Wesemann Amen!
