1 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor Sunday, November 2, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday. It is a wonderful reminder of God s faithfulness and blessing through all of life, and of the communion we share with all God s people through all the ages. We will especially remember those who have passed through death to eternal life since last All Saints Sunday Pastor Vernon Tweedt, Maurice Dilts, Angela Sisko, and Sharon Mitchell. We also remember and celebrate those who have been baptized in the past year in our congregation Abigail Papaeliou, Royce Kimmel III, John Englehart, Jacob & Justin Burchianti, Greyson Colbert, Caleb Miller and Coleson Blackwell. Be sure to remember to set your clocks back an hour Saturday night, November 1, before you go to bed, so you can be well rested and energized when you come to worship Sunday morning. November is a time for Thanksgiving. We will continue First We Give of Ourselves: Giving in Grace throughout the month of November, climaxing with our Commitment and Celebration Sunday on November 23 rd. As disciples of Christ we are called to live with deep gratitude, recognizing that all that we are and all that we have are God s gifts to us. Even in times of turmoil, uncertainty and suffering, we still have so much to give thanks for. As First We Give of Pastor s Corner Ourselves: Giving in Grace reminds us, for us Thanksgiving should be so much more than a holiday, it should be our way of life. This year we will again celebrate Thanksgiving with our brothers and sisters in Christ at First Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church of Plano. This year it is our turn to have everyone over for our Thanksgiving meal of Holy Communion. One of the names for Holy Communion is the Eucharist which comes from the Greek word for He gave thanks, referring to Jesus taking the bread and cup and giving thanks to God. We will gather on Wednesday, November 26th at 7 p.m. Please join us! The Kendall County PADS program is starting up for another year. Some members of our congregation have volunteered, but the program is still looking for more volunteers. If you are interested or have questions, please contact the church office. The 1 st Sunday of Advent will be Sunday November 30 th. Join us as we begin our Advent journey to Bethlehem and the manger. The Community Choral Advent service will be held at St. Mary s Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, December 7, at 7 p.m. Please join us for wonderful time of music and fellowship. 3 T HE ANCHOR P AGE 3 History of First Lutheran Church of Plano (Written by Helen Sears for First Lutheran's 125th Anniversary) Our congregation was formally organized on October 3, 1883, in the home of Ole Olsen. The name chosen was "The First Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Plano, IL." There were twenty-five adult charter members. Seventeen more families joined during the next two years. Services were conducted in Norwegian. As time progressed, members saw that this hindered growth, so English services were gradually added. The last confirmation class to be instructed in Norwegian was the class of By 1925 only four services a year were in Norwegian. Services were at first held in homes until a church could be built. The first church building, which cost $800, was built on North Lew Street on land donated by Louis Steward. The first service was held on December 25, The church incurred extensive damage in 1916 when it was struck by lightning. It was repaired and back in use in three months. The frame sanctuary served the congregation for 70 years. Ground-breaking for the present church was held on August 9, The church is built on the corner of Center and Clark Streets. This lot was sold to the church by Pastor Johnson for $500. He also drew the architectural plans for the church. Dedication of the new sanctuary was held on October 6, 1957 with 550 people attending. The Education Wing was dedicated in October of 1971 on the 88th anniversary of the church. Nineteen Pastors have served First Lutheran since its founding. Our first pastor was Jens C. Roseland who also served in Leland. We shared pastors with one or two other congregations for many years. In 1962 under Pastor E. Leonard Johnson First Lutheran finally became a one-point parish. As we celebrate our 131 years, we note many changes through the years. However our faith in our Lord Jesus remains constant and we continue to strive to be "First in Spirit, First in Faith, First in Outreach."

4 P AGE 4 V OLUME 27, I SSUE 10 Commemorations... (contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn) Isaac Watts was an English Christian hymn writer, theologian and logician. Thought by many to be the greatest hymn writer in the English language, he was credited with over 600 hymns. Many of his hymns remain in use today and have been translated into numerous languages. Born in Southampton, England, in 1674, Watts was brought up in the home of a committed religious Nonconformist. Watts had a classical education, learning Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Following his education, Watts was called as pastor of a large independent chapel in London, where he helped train preachers. Isaac Watts held religious opinions that were more non-denominational or ecumenical than was common at the time. He had a greater interest in promoting education and scholarship than preaching for any particular sect. Watts died in Stoke Newington in 1748, and was buried in Bunhill Fields. Watts introduced a new way of interpreting the Psalms in verse for church services. Watts proposed that the metrical translations of the Psalms as sung by Protestant Christians should give them a specifically Christian perspective. As Watts put it, they should be "imitated in the language of the New Testament." Besides writing hymns, Isaac Watts was also a theologian and logician. Watts wrote a text book on logic, first published in 1724, which was particularly popular. Watts defined logic as an art, as opposed to a science. Watts emphasis on logic as a practical art distinguishes his book from others written at that time. Watts Logic became the standard text on logic at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale. One of Watts' best-known poems was "Against Idleness and Mischief". This was parodied by Lewis Carroll in the poem "How Doth the Little Crocodile", included in his book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In his novel, David Copperfield, Charles Dickens has school master Dr. Strong quote from Watts' "Against Idleness and Mischief". Watts' hymns include: Joy to the World (based on Psalm 98, arranged in the 19th century by American Lowell Mason to an older melody of Handel) Jesus Shall Reign Where er the Sun (based on Psalm 72) O God, Our Help in Ages Past (based on Psalm 90) When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Alas! And Did My Saviour Bleed In Everything Give Thanks For all the God in mercy sends For health and children, home and friends, For comfort in the time of need, For every kindly word or deed, For happy thoughts and holy talk, For guidance in our daily walk In everything give thanks.
