1 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor Summer is winding down; school is starting up again. At First Lutheran, Sunday School, Confirmation classes, Choir and Bell Choir will be starting up again. This Summer we tried out a more contemporary style of worship. Your feedback on the survey we took the first two weeks of August showed strong support for both our traditional and contemporary services. Our Church Council reviewed the results of the survey and discussed options for our worship schedule. We decided that the best option (for now, at least) is to keep the schedule we have followed (for September through May) Sunday worship services at 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. and Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. We want to give more members a chance to experience our contemporary service so, during September we will have traditional worship at 8:15 and contemporary worship at 10:45. In October we will have contemporary worship at 8:15 and traditional worship at 10:45. We realize this might be a little confusing or inconvenient. We just plan to do this for the two months and then decide how we want to schedule things for the rest of the school year. We understand that different worship experiences and styles speak more powerfully and meaningfully to different people. Our desire in offering a contemporary s ervice is to try to offer worship that many people will find more meaningful and appealing, while also offering traditional worship for those who find it more meaningful. I want to let you know that we did look seriously at the possibility of continuing our Summer Pastor s Corner schedule (worship at 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday) throughout the school year. We had a number of concerns about this option, especially regarding how it would affect Sunday School Choir and Bell Choir, and decided not to choose that option at this time. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we continue to try different things to see what will work best for us as a congregation at this time. We appreciate your feedback. If you have questions or concerns, please talk to me, to a council member or members of the worship committee or our Contemporary Worship Task Force. Coming up in September: - Sunday, September 1, (Labor Day) we will have one service at 9 a.m. - Sunday School will kick off with Rally Day on September 8. See page 11 for full information. - I will lead a one day mini- retreat on Awe and the Sabbath Rhythm of Life on Monday, Sept. 16 th at LOMC in Oregon, Illinois. - Confirmation Orientation for 7 th and 8 th grade students and their parents will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18. (See page 10) - We will have our annual 5Bs BBQ on Friday, September 20 th. (See page 4 for full information) - Our Fall Frolic and Feast will be Saturday, Sept. 28. 3 T HE ANCHOR PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER LIBRARY NEWS School has started, and children and parents are looking forward to a new year (some children, most parents). For some of us, school is a distant memory. We are aging! So, what can we do about it? Joyfully Aging by Richard Bimler tries to answer that question. Aging is indeed a gift and a blessing. How we use these is up to us. Through humor and anecdotes the author encourages us to live each day as God s people. Also by Bimler and his son, Robert Bimler, is the book Laughter - how good humor can help you lighten your cares and the cares of others as we celebrate joy in the Lord. This book is intended for all ages. I recently had the privilege of hearing Richard Bimler speak. He was an inspirational and humrous speaker. His books are light reading, up-beat, and inspiring. Enjoy!

Sunday School Teachers: Please pack your bags for our trip Sunday School teachers who plan to stay on are requested to please call (630/ ) or send Kathy Benoit an at benoits4@sbcglobal.net. Also, if you are not currently a Sunday teacher or helper and wish to help, please do the same. We are trying to configure the classrooms for next year and need a good idea on who is staying and who has prayed about helping our Sunday School and wants to CHECK IN FOR OUR NEXT ADVENTURE! Thanks! Bibles Distributed to 3 rd Graders on Sept 15 The Education Committee and Sunday School of First Lutheran is proud to present Bibles to all 3 rd grade students and their parents at both services on Sunday, Sept 15. You will receive a letter from the church office about this special day. Please call the church office and let them know that you will be honored to attend that day. Sunday School Teachers Installed Sunday School teachers will be installed at both services on Sunday, September 15, If you will be involved in the Sunday School, please plan to attend one of these services to be recognized. Sign Up to be a Secret Pal Adult members of the church are invited to become a Sunday School Secret Pal. The only requirement is that you provide support and encouragement to a Sunday School child throughout the school year. This encouragement may be in the form of anonymous notes, cards, little snacks or surprises. If you are interested in becoming a Secret Pal, please sign your name to the list at the back of the church. We will assign you with the name and address of a Sunday School child and the rest is up to you. This is a great way to share your love of the Lord with a child and help them realize how important they are in His eyes (and yours, too!) Student Information Forms On the first day of Sunday School, we will send home a student information form and Secret Pal form with each child. Parents and students should complete these and return them the next Sunday. We would like to have up-to-date information on each family, in the event of an emergency. If your child has any allergies or special restrictions, it should be listed on this form. Also, these forms are a great help to adult Secret Pals!
