1 DCMBR 2018 Congrega on Ministers to all Rev. ric Stroshine Chad Weirick Minister of Music Stephen Con Dir. of Youth Chris an d. Susan Ve erlein Office Administrator and Spire ditor Karen Tripp Sexton Carol Gillis Treasurer and Youth Director OUR VISION STATMNT We strive to be a church that welcomes all and empowers all in Christ to share their God given talents. OUR MISSION STATMNT We are a community of inclusive love that has no walls or barriers, where all who enter are loved, respected, and accepted for who they are, reaching beyond social class, gender, race, and sexual orientation, welcoming all into our circle of love. We are a community of growth and transformation that is not content with the status quo but a community filled with the love and compassion of Christ, and an overwhelming desire to share that love. We are a community committed to not only praying together on Sunday mornings, but putting our faith into action daily. CONTNTS GROWING IN FAITH 2-3 COMMUNITY OUTRACH 4 YOUTH FLLOWSHIP 5 FINANCIAL MINISTRY 6-7 SUNDAY SCHOOL AND 8 POPL NWS Rev. ric s Corner Why Was Jesus Born Male Instead of Female? As we enter the season of Advent and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus I recall how over the years people have asked me why God chose to have Jesus be born male instead of female. Some pastors say because God realized 2,000 year ago society was male dominated and the message of Christ would have never been taken seriously by both males and females if Jesus was born female. I don t totally disagree, but I believe the major reason God chose to have Jesus be born a male was because God knew men desperately needed help and would be more recep ve to a male voice. Two thousand years later things haven t changed for men. Today men are struggling with depression, isola on, substance abuse, and ac ng out violently in record numbers. For example, of the 108 mass shoo ngs from 1982 to November 19, 2018 only three of these shoo ngs involved women. Also, substance abuse rates for men are about double those of women and men are four mes more likely than women to die from suicide. Former NFL lineman, ordained minister, and mo va onal speaker Joe hrmann claimed in a TDx talk that one of the reasons many men are resor ng to self-destruc ve behavior is they are embracing a toxic masculinity. Men are being taught from elementary school to adulthood to repress their emo ons and as a result neglec ng to live lives where they integrate their heart and head. As a result, they o en lack the ability to become emo onally mature or understand the emo ons of others which leads to rela onship frustra ons and exis ng in a fractured mental state. hrmann believes what is causing men to not achieve this holis c psychological state is the societal lies that true masculinity is to be always iden fied with athle c ability, sexual conquest, and financial success. He believes a societal obsession with sports is one of the contributors to a misguided masculinity and is a force difficult to control because he considers sports the secular religion of society. It is hard to argue with hrmann that society has a religious like devo on to sports. When driving around Hanover and other South Shore communi es on a weekend you will no ce hundreds of cars parked at ball fields and sports complexes. With the birth of Jesus a new image of masculinity was born. Jesus came into the world to show men that to be a man involved more than success on the ballfield or boardroom. Jesus witnessed how true success for both men and women is determined ul mately by the emo onal richness and quality of a person s rela onships and the willingness to be devoted to a mission which makes the world a be er place. So the next me you no ce a boy who is distraught because he neglected to achieve his full athle c poten al avoid saying to him, Be a man, stop with the tears, don t be a sissy. Instead say, It is okay to cry. Give me a hug. Success in life is found in many ways. Maybe, just this small gesture could lead to a boy becoming a man who is able to form honest rela onships, respect the physical integrity of all, and pursue a cause that will change the world. A boy who becomes such a man is considered excep onal not only by a former NFL lineman but by a spirit filled man who is referred to by many as the light of the world. 1

6 FINANCIAL MINISTRY AN UPDAT FROM TH FINANC COMMITT The Finance Commi ee thanks everyone for their contribu ons in me, talent and dollar resource so far this year. As in the past, the FCC of Hanover congrega on is very generous. One of the key responsibili es of the Finance Commi ee is to provide a fiduciary role over the church s financial health and financial founda on. Tied to this func on is an obliga on to provide transparency to the congrega on related to the approved budget and status of current financial statements / key projects. The full financial statements are available to congrega on members upon request. If you are interested, please contact me or Carol Gillis (Church Treasurer). Detailed financial reports are also contained in the Annual Report. The 2018 Annual Report is available on the church website and the 2019 Report will be available in January. Our most recent financial statements are the October YTD reports. I have captured some key highlights below in a few charts. The bo om line is that the approved 2018 Budget is in solid shape and the Finance Commi ee believes that the Non-Restricted por on of the budget (i.e. the Opera ng Budget) will be achieved in terms of posi ve income trends and sound management of expenses. In terms of the Restricted Budgets, both the Outreach and Service Fund and Building Fund (Trustees) budgets will fall short of income targets. The commi ees will need to manage expenses so that income is not exceeded. The Outreach and Service Income, primarily pledges, is ~$3,500 behind budget and the Building Fund Income, primarily pledges, is ~$2,100 behind budget. I N C O M X P N S S October YTD Actuals Non-Restricted Budget (known as the Opera ng Budget) Approved Budget Full Year Run-Rate from Annual Projec on* Mee ng Comments $204,829 $245,794 $242,346 Non-Restricted Income (primarily Offering) $0 $15,000 $15,000 Transfer from General ndowment Fund (Investment Gains / Interest) $0 $5,001 $5,001 Prior Year Surplus $204,829 $265,791 $262,347 * = Run Rate calcula on is October divided by 10 months, mes 12 months. Total Approved 2018 Non-Restricted Income (as approved at Annual Mee ng) Comments Currently expenses show a $18,974 favorability; however, Fall / Winter Program expenses are higher, u li es are variable, and higher salaries were approved midyear. In addi on, expected investment gains and interest are expected to be lower than past years due to market performance. xpenses will con nue to be faithfully managed; however, Non-Restricted Income will s ll need to meet or exceed budgeted expecta on. Please contribute generously. Dear FCC Hanover, Thank you for helping us con nue to build homes and change lives right here in our local communi es. I hope you remember that families in need will be able to enjoy this holiday season in a safe, affordable home because of people like you. We are so blessed to have you as a part of our Habitat family. With hear elt apprecia on and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving, Mar ne L. Taylor, xecu ve Director, South Shore Habitat for Humanity. *Rev. ric and Ruth Hall met with a representa ve from Habitat on November 27 and they shared that a condo complex for low income families is being built in Duxbury and Ruth is hoping to have a group from the church assist with this project in Stay tuned for details. 6

The Yoga program also provided some Outreach & Service income. A few highlights in the Opera ng Budget: Offering (both Pledged and Non-Pledged) remains the most cri cal por on of church income. Rental income for Riley Hall is ahead of plans for 2018 and is already contribu ng a surplus versus full year budget (kudos to the Rev. ric, the Church Office, and the Trustees). The Thri Shop con nues to thrive and has exceeded its full year projected income. The Thri Shop team is very dedicated, and their effort should result in a $3,000-$4,000 posi ve variance for With a strong close through the holiday s, the team may set a new income record. Thank you to the whole Thri Shop team! The global financial markets are very unpredictable this year and therefore, General ndowment Fund income is hard to judge. We have been using about half of the annual income to supplement the Opera ng Budget. We do not want to use the base principle of the General ndowment Fund, so the gains are important. xpenses reflect the salary increases approved by church membership, retroac ve to January 1 st. xpense categories are well controlled. U li es are the excep on; they have been unpredictable, and an early-in-the year issue related to fuel costs has been resolved. xpenses associated with snow removal have been avoided for many years due to the Lander s family. Their dona on-in-kind is much appreciated and we are thankful to have such generous and con nuous support. For Commi ees, Boards and the Church Office / Staff, please ensure any outstanding invoices and expenses are submi ed to Carol Gillis. It is important that we have accurate financials as we end the year, build the proposed 2019 budget and develop the Annual Report. As we come through Thanksgiving and into Advent, please consider your annual giving levels and commitments, both for the final weeks of 2018 and for your Pledge targets for Thank you! Lastly, as we head towards Annual Mee ng, please consider volunteering for Finance Commi ee. We operated one member short through 2018 and we have several members who will be moving off the Finance Commi ee star ng in We will need to replace 3-4 members of the 6 members commi ee, so please considering talking to me, Carol or Jamaal about volunteering. The me commitment is 2-3 hours per month, with some addi onal me associated with the prepara on of the proposed budget and Annual Report. We would love to see some new faces engage with the financial underpinning of FCC of Hanover. Faithfully yours, James Hoyes, Finance Commi ee Chair 7
