The idea of "Letting Go" is foremost in my mind as I look forward to some much needed vacation time which will take me out of the country for a bit. However, as most of us are still reflecting on the introduction of the Transitional Senior Minister. Rev. Dr. Ronald Hopson, "Letting Go" is going to be a prominent theme in this new chapter of ministry at Peoples Church. It is something "We all" must embrace. This does not mean a lack of responsiveness or accountability, it does not mean dispensing with everything we have known but it is a time to remember, to reflect, to appreciate and move on. I pray that you find the blessings in this moment in our transition towards the future God has prepared and I pray that you find comfort and inspiration in these words. Letting go isn t winning, and it isn t losing. It s not about pride, and it s not about how you appear, and it s not obsessing or dwelling on the past. Letting go isn t blocking memories or thinking sad thoughts, and doesn t leave emptiness, hurt, or sadness. It s not striving in or giving up. Letting go isn t about loss and it s not defeat. To let go is to cherish memories, and overcome and move on. It s having an open mind and confidence in the future. Letting go is accepting. It s learning and experiencing and growing. To let go is to be thankful for the experiences that made you laugh, made you cry, and made you grow. It s about all that you have, all that you had, and all that you will soon gain again. Letting go is having the courage to accept change, and the strength to keep moving. Letting go is growing up. It s realizing that the heart can sometimes be the most potent remedy. To let go is to open a door, and to clear a path, and to set you free

2 MISSION AND VISION OF THE CHURCH MISSION OF THE CHURCH The Mission of Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is: To worship God and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to labor for peace and justice so that the world may become the kingdom of God on earth; To foster within its membership, by its teaching and its ministry, the spirit which was in Christ; To be to its membership and the community a source of spiritual refreshment, guidance, transformation, comfort and support; To impress upon its membership the need for mutual loyalty and charity; To teach its young people the noble traditions of its past; to point them to the possibilities of its future, and to give guidance in the building of Christian character; and To educate and develop its members for consecrated and sacrificial service. VISION OF THE CHURCH so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individually we are members of one another. (Romans 12:5 NRSV) Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ is a progressive Christian community called by faith, led by hope, and united by love to build strong and committed disciples for Jesus Christ and to be a spiritual presence locally and globally in service to humanity. This vision is lived out through our focus on relationship with the Lord, which produces perspective; scholarship in study of the Scriptures, which produces focus; stewardship awareness in our giving and sharing which produces trust; and fellowship with our sisters and brothers in Christ, which produces unity. Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it, for there is a vision for the appointed time (Habakkuk 2:2-3 NRSV) 2

4 WELLNESS CORNER Rethink Food: A Plant-Based Diet Nutrition plays a crucial role in our health. There is increasing evidence that a plant-based diet can stop and reverse certain medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and even have a positive effect on battling cancer. Most of us consume too much protein. We think that meat is the best way to get our protein, but there are problems inherent in consuming too much meat. For optimal health increase plant-based foods, decrease refined carbohydrates including limiting or eliminating sugar and sugary drinks, decrease or eliminate meat, and decrease the amounts of saturated and trans fats we consume. These steps can improve health, and relatively quickly. The American Cancer Society says that the most important ways to reduce cancer risk are to maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and eat a mostly plant -based diet that limits saturated fat. So, consume the four food groups of the Power Plate: Vegetables, Legumes, Grains and Fruits. And, drink plenty of water. Facts to know: Communities that live longer do the following: Include more vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes in the diet Exercise (Walking counts) Don t smoke For information on the effects of a plant-based diet on health, see the video Forks Over Knives, online (Youtube, Amazon, Netflix, or itunes). Fiber boosts good bacteria in the digestive system, which is good for our immune system Plant-based foods contain NO cholesterol Animal foods, including meat, dairy, and eggs contain cholesterol but NO fiber We have all of the cholesterol we need. Our body makes cholesterol; we do not need to consume more. A plant-based diet has been known to: Reduce or reverse diabetes Help weight management Lower cholesterol Lower high blood pressure Promote health The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health just published an NIH funded study press release states: Healthy plant-based diet linked with substantially lower type 2 diabetes risk. 4

The website is the New Front Door of the Church, and allows members/users to interact, communicate and connect to foster connectivity and community.
