2 BLESSED TRINITY PARISH From Fr. Doug s Desk Rounding Out Our Vision Next week, the AWE team will begin reporting about the results of the parish surveys. A condensed version will be included in the parish bulletin and a longer version will be available to those who want one. But the AWE process is only about one aspect of our parish life, namely welcoming and engaging parishioners. There is more. One way our parish can grow is by merging our adult education opportunities. Right now it seems that various groups have their own speaker. Sometimes this may pertain to male or female spirituality, but at other times there is no reason why the whole parish could not be invited to these adult educational opportunities. In addition to opening up these talks to a wider audience, they might draw people who are not members of any parish organization. Another way our parish must grow is in the area of social justice. Sometimes I think the idea of bringing about social justice is so broad that people get discouraged just thinking about it. And yet, it is a major focus of our faith. Some parishes have Social Justice Commissions that help research information about topics and invite the parishioners to make a concrete faith response. For example there might be an evening to talk about the death penalty followed by a request from people to sign letters asking that the death penalty be abolished in Ohio. Or the topic might be the sex slave trade that is prevalent throughout the world and in Ohio too. Just finding out the facts of this can be shocking. And yet, it can move people to action. Over the years there have been many victories given to social justice forums. It was through them that the wars in El Salvador and Darfur ended. It was through social activism that ecology and thinking green took off in the church. It was through an analysis of the death penalty and developments in scientific technology that led to the Innocents Project, the saving of more than 235 people from death row who were innocent. By forming a social justice commission, our parish will be able to prioritize our areas of concern from the wider body of social justice concerns. Certainly bring- CLEVELAND, OH ing an end to war and exposing the immorality of drone missiles would be a high priority since we have many soldier-parishioners risking their lives overseas. It is my hope that some of our social minded groups like the Haiti committee, the St Vincent de Paul Society, Pax Christi, the Peace Witness and other interested parishioners might work together to make a Social Justice Commission a reality in our parish. Youth Oriented Community Mass Beginning in the fall, there will be a youth oriented community Mass once a month. This means it is a Mass open to the whole parish but it will cater to youth in its style of music, worship and youth involvement as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers and so on. Disciple of the Week This week we highlight JOHN DEIGHTON. John is a Eucharistic Minister and is very involved with the Confirmation Program at Blessed Trinity. He can be seen in section five at the 9am Mass fairly regularly. We congratulate John not only for being disciple of the week but for slimming down a bit after having lost over 50 pounds! Way to go, Little John. May They Rest in Peace Mary Chucksa Priscilla Hustak WELCOME TO OUR NEW PARISHIONER My apologies to John Veres for spelling his name wrong.
