2 FROM FR. DOUG S DESK You and Yours Two weeks ago when we were having the edible forest open house, one of our parishioners asked me, So, Fr. Doug, how many chickens do you have? I replied, I don t have any chickens. They are our chickens. Last Sunday after Mass I was tagged twice on Facebook. Both entries said something like, Fr. Doug did the anointing of the sick at Mass this weekend. And I thought, I did? Where was everybody else? I thought we did this together in prayerful support and song and praise. So often the words we use subtly betray what we think about something. That happens in the church as well. For example, in the marriage rite there are references to man and wife. This reflects the former, non-sacramental idea that a woman s identity comes from her relationship with a man, hence the use of the word wife. One does not find the phrases man and woman or husband and wife used consistently in the rite. So when we use the word you regarding parish life, sometimes that subtly betrays what we really think; that father is the center and life of the parish, that everyone else is fluff. That is why they are not my chickens. They are our chickens. In baptism, we all become members of our parish. We all assume the responsibility of and stewardship for it. Most of us know this in our heads, but we still use former ways of speaking when talking about our parish. When we do this, we are not speaking in a theologically correct manner. It also makes it easier to shed responsibility for our parish. After all, what do I care about the chickens if they re his chickens? Why do I have to care about our bills if they re father s bills? We hold all of this in a sacred trust together. Two Dead Bodies Last Saturday, Dory informed me that when she was coming to church (a little before 3:00pm) she saw three chickens crossing the road and not to get to the other side. I called David, our point person for the chickens. But he could not find them. On Monday, David sent me an , This weekend five chickens disappeared. Something is spooking them. I had one of my local urban farmers over and he gave me a mini -goat that will stay with the chickens in their coop for a few weeks to protect them. She is very people friendly and looks like a small dog. Later David wrote. I found two bodies this morning. I assume he meant chickens. It looks like a raccoon or some other animal got them. 3 AROUND THE PARISH & OTHER PARISH NEWS DISCIPLE OF THE WEEK This week we thank Isabelle Izzy Robertson for serving our parish. Isabelle was a founding member of our youth group. Today she is an altar server, usually at the 9:00am Mass. She also helps at our Community Meal. Recently Izzy received the coach s award from the golf team at St. Joseph Academy. Congrats, Izzy and thanks for being a good disciple. PRE BAPTISM CLASS Date has changed. It will be held November 10, 2015, at 7:00 9:00 pm in the church. Parents who plan to have their first child bap zed are required to a end. Call the rectory to register. Taize Prayer: Join us again for Taize Prayer on Tuesday, November 3. We will gather at River's Edge, 3430 Rocky River Drive at 7 P.M. in their worship space. A number of parish members are involved in leading this program. Taize Prayer is a series of prayerful chants interspersed with scripture and silence. Please come and join our November GPS (Get Prayer Started) Prayer Gathering as we focus on giving thanks to God for the many blessings we have received this past year. We will meet this Thursday, November 5th in the Rectory Basement from 7-8:15 PM. We look forward to praying together with you! AGELESS SPIRIT Exploring the Spiritual Gifts & Challenges of Aging Presentation, discussion and meditation on the spiritual dimensions of aging. For those who call themselves old and those who refuse to, those who are retired or planning retirement, those who minister to or are caregivers for older adults.
