2 BLESSED TRINITY PARISH From Fr. Doug s Desk Ushers Over the years we have lost some great ushers: Ray Francis, Ron Hartmiller, Donna Kemer, Clem Baumgartner to name a few. These people have not been replaced. Rather good hearted souls have been helping to take up the collection. They have been pretty faithful at that and very competent. For that we are grateful. But there is more to being a full time usher. Other ushers, like Thomas Heim, have had their work schedules change, so now they can no longer ush at the Mass to which they were accustomed. Some ushers share in the role of greeter but not all. Greeters have a specific role of welcome and hospitality. Ushers are more nuts and bolts. What are some of the things ushers do? Before Mass ushers make sure there are bulletins at every door. One usher stands by the lift and assists who may need it. Consequently, ushers need to be trained how to use the lift, where to find the key for it, how to turn the lift on, how to reset the lift, etc. Ushers answer questions from visitors, such as where are the bathrooms, where can I find a hymnal, etc. Their usher pin is helpful in identifying them. Ushers help distribute handouts as needed. These may be worship aids, Catholic Charities envelopes, or something for the day s liturgy. Like all liturgical ministers, the ushers are also called to participate fully in the liturgy from beginning to end, singing the hymns, praying the responses, lifting their hearts and minds to God in prayer. Ushers need to know where the defibrillator machine is. (It s in the servers sacristy) and how to operate it. Ushers must be vigilant if windows need to be opened before Mass or closed after Mass. Ushers also stay after Mass to make sure the doors are closed so that the air conditioning does not escape in the summer and the heat does not escape in the winter. The most challenging part of the ministry of usher is deciding what to do in an unexpected situation. Sometimes we have children who have autism who act up. Sometimes people leave their pew. Are they sick or is that their form or prayer or are they a danger to the congregation or do they just want to give the priest and deacon the sign of peace? An usher must make a quick decision about that. And yes, ushers take up the collection too! Shaking that basket is an art. Now we want you to know that we are looking for more. Would you be willing to be an usher? If so, please notify one of the staff and we will have you trained. Dee Ialacci is in charge of training ushers. She will give you a manual and make sure you know all of the above. Thank you. This week we thank John Ward for his service to our parish. Evening Taize Prayer begins again at River s Edge, 3430 Rocky River Drive. At 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 6. Taize Prayer is a combination of chants and silence, a meditative style of prayer. Parish members are involved in leading this prayer. Join us! Mass on the World. Join us on Saturday morning, October 10 at Centering Space in Lakewood to explore a way of praying that brings together our knowledge of the universe and the universal living presence of Christ. This program is inspired by the writings of Fr. Teilhard de Chardin S.J., scientist and mystic. The program is led by parish member Mike Reiling. The cost is $20. 5 October 4, 2015 Samaritan Ministry: Addiction Awareness Workshop The Samaritan Ministry of St. Malachi Parish will offer a FREE one-day workshop on ADDICTION AWARENESS in St. Malachi Center (behind the church), West 25 th & Detroit, Cleveland, OH 44113, on Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 9 AM to 4 PM. PB&J sandwiches, snacks and beverages will be provided. Donations welcome. Relevant topics will include: addiction/alcoholism as a brain disease; effects of drinking/using on others; treatment options; 12-Step programs of recovery; resources in the community.
