2 BLESSED TRINITY PARISH From Fr. Doug s Desk These Times Try Our Souls By GABE HUCK I want to put on these two pages this month of October something to help me (and us) understand what matters. So from Abraham Joshua Heschel: It is the liturgy that teaches us what to pray for. It is through the words of the liturgy that we discover what moves us unawares, what is urgent in our lives, what in us is related to the ultimate. And from Michael Ignatieff: We need justice, we need liberty, and we need as much solidarity as can be reconciled with justice and liberty. But we also need, as much as anything else, language adequate to the times we live in. We need to see how we live now and we can only see with words and images. We need words to keep us human. Our needs are made of words: They come to us in speech, and they can die for lack of expression. Without a public language to help us find our own words, our needs will dry up in silence. It is words only, the common meaning they bear, which give me the right to speak in the name of the strangers at my door. I write this in Istanbul in early July After our four journeys to Iraq during the U.S./U.N. sanctions and then seven years in Syria, we have come back for two months to work with Syrians. Syrians said yes to more than a million Iraqis, gave them safety in Damascus and elsewhere after the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Now the number of Syrians who have been displaced since 2011 is half the population of the country. Most of those have stayed in Syria but have not returned to their homes. But 4 million are outside their country, and half of them are in Turkey. The destruction in Syrian towns and cities from the Al-Assad regime s first violent response to nonviolent protests was the beginning of four years that could not have been imagined. In Turkey we are seeing not the barrel bombs and beheadings, but a tiny bit of what happens as violence from all sides consumes the people. We have seen and heard about the destruction of life and culture in Iraq. Now we are hearing the stories of Syrians: Some had hoped that their pain and their nonviolence would somehow let Syria s president, for whom many had a bit of hope once, take their cries and respond. No one could have foreseen the present catastrophe. We hardly know now what has happened. We in the CLEVELAND, OH United States seldom understand how so many in the world now ridicule our leaders, our power, our agenda. They wonder how the power of our economy and our willingness to do to others what would be unforgiveable, if done to us, have made violence as Stokely Carmichael said decades ago, and was endlessly berated for saying it as American as apple pie. I am always seeking to understand the ways that we could become ready to grasp what we have done and what we have failed to do. The we is crucial. In these times, we must see that doing evil is plural, shared. I may never have been told about the firebombed cities, may never hear the drones hovering above, never asked about the poisons that linger after weapons are tested on Iraqis and their homes, never been on either side of prison bars, never bothered to understand what the 1 percent means. Even so, I am not excused. I ask myself what our church has done and failed to do. What will make our assembly s liturgy into both thanksgiving and lament, two so easily forgotten? Does it matter whether what is being sung by the church embodies in word and sound the Gospel we embrace? That question is my challenge. So I have tried sometimes to see what I have to bring to this discussion. Autumn is here with its many opportunities! We invite you to take advantage of one of those wonderful opportunities to pause for a time of prayer with us at GPS (Get Prayer Started) this Thursday, October 1st from 7-8:15 PM in the Rectory Basement. We hope to see you there! Edible Forest Memorials Bricks We were able to fit in more threes than we thought into the edible forest. If you would like to purchase a memorial fruit or pecan tree, please contact the rectory with your name and the name of the person in whose honor the tree is being bought. The suggested donation is $150 per tree. Blessing of Animals. To honor the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, please bring your leashed or contained pets to have them blessed on October 4th from 2:00 2:15 pm in the back parking lot of Blessed Trinity.

Join us on Saturday morning, October 10 at Centering Space in Lakewood to explore a way of praying that brings together our knowledge of the universe and the universal living presence of Christ.
