2 BLESSED TRINITY PARISH From Fr. Doug s Desk Gifts to be Celebrated Last week I wrote about the gifts the new parish enjoys from the former Annunciation Parish. This week I d like to write about the gifts from the former Ascension. One of the gifts that came from the former Ascension is the liturgy. Ascension was blessed to have Fr. Joe Fortuna who has a doctorate in Liturgy, is on the adjunct faculty at St. Mary Seminary and just had a natural sense of ritual prayer. He strove to have full, active and conscious participation as the documents of Vatican II called for. Ascension was first and foremost noted for its good liturgy when it comes to people s participation. People arrived early for Mass in preparation. They stayed until the end or longer to visit and keep the Spirit alive. During the liturgy people were engaged in ritual prayer. The church was designed to have us gather around the table of the Lord in a semicircular fashion. The choir was seen as part of the congregation. Lectors proclaimed the Word of God after proper preparation, sometimes memorizing the readings. Ascension had a particularly keen grasp of the communal nature of all the sacraments. Baptisms were celebrated at weekend liturgies so that more of the community could be present. The entire congregation comes forward to sign the church with the cross of faith. The congregation prays for the parents and godparents. In celebrating Confirmation, Ascension was one of the pilot parishes that had restored the original order of the sacraments; Baptism, Confirmation and then Eucharist. In this way, service to the community was seen as something that flowed out of our reception of Baptism, rather than an activity to be performed in order to get confirmed. Anointing of the sick also has a communal dimension. The custom here which I have continued is this. When a person wants to be anointed, the congregation is invited to stay after Mass to pray with the person to be anointed. This has become a powerful and moving experience both for the anointed one and the congregation. When you hear that we are anointing someone after Mass in the future, I encourage you to stay and share in this moving celebration of the sacrament of the sick. CLEVELAND, OH When I came to Ascension in January, I could see the benefits that came to the community by their celebration of liturgies. It was something that I wanted to preserve. But every priest has his own style, too, and my style is very different than Fr. Fortuna s. This was quite the shock for the people of Ascension. I suspect just having a different presider than what people were accustomed to in their former parishes was change enough. My presidential style (the way I lead us in ritual prayer) my preaching style, my footwear, my approach to liturgy is my own. It is what I bring to the liturgy. It has little if anything to do with Ascension or Fr. Fortuna. Greeting the Christ in each of us before Mass is my style. The new Eucharistic prayer we are singing was my suggestion. The Blessed Trinity Parish anthem was my choice and it is my decision that we sing it each week to gain a sense of community. These were all attempts on my part to preserve the fine liturgical tradition of Ascension while at the same time provide something new, yet common for us all for the new parish of Blessed Trinity. It is heartwarming to see the wonderful participation in our Sunday liturgies. Many have attached themselves to the fine liturgy that was begun by Ascension. Let us work together to keep our liturgies fresh and relevant. A big thank you to Judy Beercheck, Sharon Mirola, Ed and Mary Zavoda and their children Jeffrey and Anna and Patti Baddour and her daughters Alexandra and Nicole for taking the time to clean the residences of the CSJ s as well as the outside flower beds and gutters. The sisters will be moving in this week. We look forward to having these good neighbors. Have you prayed for the person with whom you exchanged your Blessed Trinity cross today? If not, now is a good time to do so!
