Our Hands. This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. This year, Gethsemane, Resurrection, St. Timothy, and Trinity Lutheran Churches are proud to join together for a day of service on Saturday, September 9th. Then we will have a joint Worship service on Sunday, September 10:30am. This Worship service will be at Centennial High School and it will be the only Worship service offered by these congregations on that day! Please see details inside. C & M Publications is the printer of the Herald. The business relationship is very simple and convenient. The Herald is prepared as we always have. However, after our final proof is confirmed our print file is sent electronically to C & M for printing. The Herald will be returned ready for mailing with mailing labels 48 hours later. All at no cost to Resurrection Church, made possible through the support of our local sponsors found on page eleven. We encourage you to read the businesses listed and use them for your personal needs whenever possible. Let them know where you saw their ad. Should you have a business and desire to reach your congregation with your ad message, please call Chris McAdams directly at: Thank you.

3 Dear Resurrection Family; Thank you so much for the lovely cards and to those who attended Dave s service. You all have been very compassionate and loving during his illness and passing. Many Blessings; Shirley Piel Thank you! Katie Petke for filling in on piano/organ where needed this summer. To all the volunteers who supported the family of Dave Piel by assisting with his funeral on July 8 th. Todd Lutz and the RLC youth for representing Resurrection on the Nez Perce reservation. The God s Work, Our Hands team for their efforts to bring together our Mini- Cluster with fun service projects and a combined worship in September. Our youth volunteers who run the slides, acolyte and crucifer at our Sunday services. The teachers and volunteers who helped with RLC & Gethsemane s combined Vacation Bible School. Steve & Kim Daugherty for providing an awesome Hammond organ on Pentecost Sunday, which added super fun new dynamic to the music that day! Please also keep our Transition Team in your prayers as they continue their work and prayerfully consider the information provided by the Oregon Synod s Congregational Vitality Survey taken by the congregation on July 23 rd. We are very excited to announce that Ray McKechnie, who was our vicar (pastoral intern) at RLC from , has been called to serve at Creator Lutheran Church in Clackamas, Oregon! He will begin later in September, installation service is pending. Pastor Ray has been serving his first call at St. Matthew s Episcopal Church in Grand Junction, Colorado. Congrats Pastor Ray & Welcome Back To Oregon!

4 Transition Team Update - August 2017 We have been busy conducting individual interviews with Congregation Members regarding their current involvement and ideas for the future. If you have not been contacted and would like to share any comments, please contact a Transition Team Member. The Vitality Surveys have been sent to the Synod. These will be analyzed and results shared with us this Fall. Our next step will be to verify the official membership of our Church. A Note from Sue.. Hi! It s me again. Council President, Steve Dougherty is giving me some space again in the newsletter so I thought I would take advantage and give you a few more council updates. Last month, I told you we were cautiously optimistic about our financial condition. Now we have another month under our belt and while we have managed to keep our expenses down, we are growing concerned about our contributions. Through June, we are running only $765 more in income compared to expenses. The reason we are positive is because we have continued to keep our expenses down. We have had $26,334 less in expenses compared to the same period last year. Our real area of concern is our contributions. Our contributions are down $10,925 from last year. If we continue on our current contribution trend, we will be in trouble by the end of the year. We anticipated reduced expenses for the beginning of the year but not for the last half so we will be closing this gap very soon. Sometimes giving in the summer is a little sketchy because people are on vacation and giving is sporadic. We hope this is a temporary condition and giving will increase soon. The good news is we have increased local and global mission support (from the general fund) this year. Thank you for all you do to support the programs and ministry at RLC. A full financial update will be provided at the Stewardship ice cream social on September 30 th. Also last month, I reported the Council had been focused on maintenance issues and fall planning. The chimney repair and roof replacement on the farm house is complete thanks to some generous donors. The washer in Luther Lodge has been replaced. We are still working on the other issues I mentioned (water heater and estimates on church roof repair). For fall planning, while many plans are still in the works, the God s Work, Our Hands service event on September 9 th is well underway. Please remember to sign up for the event and get your shirt ordered. I hope you are using this summer time to rest and rejuvenate yourself. It is good to take a break and get refreshed. Enjoy! My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 Sue Hiersche RLC Council Vice President

5 August Mission of The Month Sanctuary During August, RLC is lending our support to local immigrants, the sojourner who dwells among us, Ezekiel 47:22. The Portland organization of faith-based volunteers for immigrant rights is IMIrJ.org: Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice, formerly the Oregon New Sanctuary Movement (ONSM) This is a coalition of individuals, faith leaders and diverse faith communities called by our conscience to respond actively and publicly to the suffering of our immigrant brothers and sisters in the U.S. To find out more about the Portland Sanctuary Movement, Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice, check out the website at or on Facebook: On Sunday, August 27 th, the IMIrJ coordinator will speak to our congregation and be available for questions between services. Feel free, also, to contact Diane Lafrenz with questions, August Library Book Review Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis that of poor, white Americans. Author J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born into it. The Vance family story began with hope in postwar America. J.D. s grandparents were dirt poor and in love and moved north from Kentucky s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that J.D. s grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, never fully escaping the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country. Check out this book and many others in your RLC Library!
