3 Building a Culture of Peace Commitment and Community November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ s coming again. So the readings today tell of the final resurrection and the end time. In the turmoil of hope, fear, and disbelief that these predictions provoke in us, Hebrews sounds a note of confident trust. Christ makes a way for us where there is no way, and we walk it confidently, our hearts and bodies washed in baptismal water, trusting the one who has promised. The more we see the last day approaching, the more important it is to meet together to provoke one another to love. Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. 4 *Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. Amen. Set free to know God s grace through Jesus Christ, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. O God, our merciful redeemer, We confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given for you, and for + his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. 5 *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Holy God, blessed and wise, you teach us the wisdom of work and the blessing of generosity. Grant us who are called Christian, teachable spirits that we may remain loyal to you; courage that we may risk a new venture of love; and dignity that we may recognize your image in all people and so bring honor to the name of Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. -- Quiet reflection First Reading Daniel 12:1-3 At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 5

6 Psalm 16 Second Reading Hebrews 10:11-14, Every priest stands day after day at service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that Christ opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for the one who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and country against country; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. 7

8 Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. 10 Everything Is Yours, Lord *Offering Prayer Let us pray. God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will bring peace to the whole creation. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 10

11 It is indeed right, our duty and our joy we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus *Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer proclaim the Lord s death until he comes: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. *Lord s Prayer Our Mother, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 11

Mission of the Month: The Coming Home Collaborative. Since 2005, the Coming Home Collaborative has encouraged communities of faith to engage in addressing the suffering of veterans and their families. CHC holds events to promote best practices like the Vets Ministry Roundtables, and sponsors healing opportunities. CHC provides support for persons of all faiths so that leaders can be genuinely helpful to veterans. Evolved in recent years into a trauma-informed organization, primarily looking at post trauma but also concerned with preventing trauma, CHC sees moral injury as its current focus.
