Time after Pentecost In today s gospel many people take offense at Jesus invitation to eat his flesh and drink his blood; even many of Jesus disciples peel off. This is the backdrop in John s gospel for Peter s confession of faith. To whom can we go? asks Peter, in words we sometimes sing just before the gospel is read. You have the words of eternal life. In order to take such a stand, as Peter and Joshua did, Paul tells us to arm ourselves with the word of God. We pray in the Spirit that we might be bold ambassadors of the gospel. Gathering Music Welcome *Baptism Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. (Please bring the bulletin insert with you as we gather at the baptismal font.) We sing: Love is flowing. from the fountain of life. Peace is pouring Mercy streaming

*Greeting The grace of our Savior Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Holy God, your word feeds your people with life that is eternal. Direct our choices and preserve us in your truth, that, renouncing what is false and evil, we may live in you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Sovereign. Amen. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. -- Quiet reflection First Reading Joshua 24:1-2a, Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Now therefore revere YAHWEH, and serve God in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve YAHWEH. Now if you are unwilling to serve YAHWEH, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve YAHWEH. 4

Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake YAHWEH to serve other gods; for it is YAHWEH our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. God protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and YAHWEH drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve YAHWEH, for YAHWEH is our God. Bible Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:15-22 Chant responsively The eyes of God are u- pon the righteous, and God s ears are open to their cry. The face of God is against those who do evil, to erase the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and God hears them, and delivers them from all their troubles. God is near to the broken hearted and saves those whose spir- its are crushed. Many are the troubles of the righteous, but God delivers them from every one. God will keep safe all their bones; not one of them shall be broken. Evil will bring death to the wicked and those who hate the righteous will be punished. O God, you redeem the life of your servants, and those who put their trust in you will not be punished. 5

Second Reading Ephesians 6:10-20 Be strong in God and in the strength of God s power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 6

*Gospel Acclamation The holy gospel according to John, the 6 th chapter. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading John 6:56-69 Jesus said, Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Abba sent me, and I live because of my Abba, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son-of-Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by Abba God. 7

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, Do you also wish to go away? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. Sermon *Hymn of the Day Remember and Rejoice #454 *Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, Hear us, O God and the congregation responds, Your mercy is great. ) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. 8

Meal God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. *Peace (The people greet each other: Peace be with you. ) The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Gathering our Gifts All present, even those who contribute through automatic payments, are invited to lay hands upon the collection plate symbolizing their contributions. *Offertory We Plow the Fields and Scatter #680 *Offering Prayer Let us pray. Be known to us, O Christ, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is our duty and delight we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 9

*Sanctus *Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer 10

*Lord s Prayer (re-translation of the Aramaic) O Breathing Life, your Name shines everywhere! Release a space to plant your Presence here. Imagine your possibilities now. Embody your desire in every light and form. Grow through us this moment's bread and wisdom. Untie the knots of failure binding us, as we release the strands we hold of others' faults. Help us not forget our Source, yet free us from not being in the Present. From you arises every Vision, Power and Song from gathering to gathering. Amen - May our future actions grow from here! Invitation to Communion Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing. Eat This Bread, Drink This Cup #492 Blessed Assurance #638 I Come with Joy #482 *Blessing *Prayer 11

Announcements Mission of the Month: Our own Neighborhood Quilting Project is the August Mission of the Month. The project is well supported with fabric for the nearly 300 quilts. However, there are costs for the filler and repair of machines. Please write Quilting on your check memo line or envelope. Thanks for your support. School Kits. We are again planning to fill school kits for Lutheran World Relief on God s Work, Our Hands Sunday on September 9. The kits contain 70-sheet spiral notebooks, pencils, blue or black ink ball point pens, pencil sharpeners, blunt tip scissors, centimeter rulers and 2.5-inch erasers. Items must be new. Supplies can be brought to the church at any time or money can be donated to the project. Choir kicks off a new season. The new season of choir is almost upon us. The first rehearsal will be Wednesday, September 5 at 7:30 and our first singing in worship will be on Sunday, September 9. We will meet at 10:00 in the Sanctuary to rehearse for the 10:30 service. Please join us on Sunday even if you are not able to be there on Wednesday night. All ages are welcome to be part of the Our Saviour s Lutheran Church choir and come and make a joyful noise to God! See Psalms 66, 95, 98 and 100 The Thousand Dollar Meal Your very own OSLC Finance Committee is excited to make lunch for you after worship on Sunday, September 9. This lunch will be available for all, and we will accept a free will offering to support the mission and the budget of our church. We have Thrivent matching funds to support this meal, and we are really excited to raise at least one thousand dollars and hopefully much, much more. We plan to cook our way forward until our $15,000 budget shortfall has simmered to a fine reduction. What a great way for you and your family to get ready for God s Work, Our Hands activities that afternoon. You simply won t want to miss this banquet. 14
