3 Building a Culture of Peace Armistice Day 2018 is the 100 th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice, ending World War I. Bells, especially church bells, rang around the world, 11 times at the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month. The ringing of the bells, and the massive movement that followed called for THE WAR TO END ALL WAR to be just that. It is time to ring the bells again. Love your enemies, Jesus said, and pray for those who persecute you. Blessed are the peacemakers, Jesus also said, for they shall be called children of God. Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Gathering Music Welcome

4 *Opening Litany Holy and blessed Trinity, have mercy upon us. From all fear and prejudice, bitterness, and all hardness of heart, loving God, deliver us. From all spite, revenge, and destructive anger, loving God, deliver us. From the desire to dominate others, to impose our will, and from all feelings of superiority, loving God, deliver us. Silence and the sound of a bell Open our hearts towards our neighbor, and help us to work together for the common good. Hear us and help us. Strengthen us to stand for all that is just and true and right. Hear us and help us. Grant that we may come to understand our enemies. Hear us and help us. O God of the nations, as we look to that day when you will gather people from north and south, east and west, into the unity of your peaceable reign, guide with your just and gentle wisdom all who take counsel for the nations of the world, that all people may spend their days in security, freedom, and peace, through Jesus Christ, proclaimer of peace. Amen. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. -- Quiet reflection First Reading Micah 6:6-8 What shall I bring when I come before YAHWEH, and bow down before God on high? you ask. Am I to come before God with burnt offerings? With year-old calves? Will YAHWEH be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Should I offer my firstborn for my wrongdoings - the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? God has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does YAHWEH require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. 5

For, Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading Mark 8:34-37 Sparks Bible pages Jesus called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their soul? Indeed, what can they give in return for their soul? This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. We love all ages in worship and leave it to the families to decide. 7

8 Sermon The Armistice of 1918 ended the horrendous slaughter of World War I, called THE WAR TO END ALL WARS. When the Armistice was signed, exuberant JOY broke out around the world. For many years bells rang 11 times at that 11 th hour of the 11 th day on the 11 th month. Then it slowly faded away, especially in the U.S. Now we ring bells again, many bells, many places, 11 times, at that sacred moment. With a moment of silence, we remember the soldiers and civilians killed in warfare in every country, and we commit to work and pray for peace. *Hymn of the Day Let Peace Fill the Earth 8

9 *Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, Gracious God, in your mercy and the congregation responds, you hear our prayer. ) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. *Peace Meal God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will bring peace to the whole creation. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 10

12 Invitation to Communion Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing. 15 Announcements Celebration of Community and Commitment All of our gifts come from God. Let s celebrate! Our annual Celebration of Commitment and Community is next Sunday, November 18. After worship we ll enjoy some snacks, bid on silent auction items that showcase our talents or offer up our time, and enjoy the company of friends all while raising funds for the church. Our goal is to raise $10,000 toward our 2018 budget. You will be able to pay for auction items you win by cash, check, credit card, or via your mobile device. A few reminders: Today is the deadline to tell us what you re donating to the auction. Donation slips are in the poster display in the hallway outside the Hospitality Center. Items or an enticing visual representation or ad for the item can be brought to church beginning today through next Sunday at 9:00 am. We still need a few volunteers on auction day to keep thing running smoothly. Sign up at the poster display and thank you! Please plan to attend next Sunday and bid generously! Everyone is welcome. We can t wait to celebrate with you! Life s Blessing Fund was approved by the church council for OSLC as a way for members to give thanks for their many blessings. Mark an anniversary, graduation, birth, or remember or honor a loved one- Give thanks for anyone or anything important to your life. You ll find cards for this purpose with envelopes in the pew racks in front of you. Put your gift and the completed card in the envelope and place in the offering plate or give it to an usher. 16 CES Top Food Shelf Items Needed: Help CES improve the quality of nutrition in our neighborhood by donating healthy foods. Fill a bag or two of groceries and bring them to OSLC anytime. Food items needed include: 100% fruit juice, flour & sugar (5# bags or less), beef stew & chili, canned chicken or tuna (in water), canned fruit (in light syrup or own juice), chicken or beef broth, olive oil & vegetable oil, whole grain cereals, old fashioned oats & instant oatmeal packets, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti noodles, jelly and peanut butter. New to Our Saviour s Lutheran Church and interested in learning more? Join us for lunch! We're glad you found your way here! Holden Village 2019 Summer Trip We are organizing a congregation trip to Holden Village in Washington state for this coming summer. If you are curious and interested in learning more, please plan on coming to the interest meeting on Wednesday, November 14 from 7:30-8:30 pm (right after Dinner Church). We will learn more about Holden, discuss travel options and cost, and determine the dates of the trip. Hope to see many of you there! 17 November s Mission of the Month: Coming Home Collaborative The Coming Home Collaborative (CHC) is an open and growing volunteer association of people addressing the suffering of military veterans as well as the related suffering of their families and communities. The CHC stands out among the many organizations that intend to help vets as one of the few which also seek to prevent their wounding. The Coming Home Collaborative: Encourages congregations of faith to address the moral and spiritual wounding experienced by some veterans. Promotes pathways to healing. Convenes bi-monthly vets ministry roundtables to facilitate networking and promote best ministry practices. Collaborates with others in the international veterans recovery movement to identify and reconcile moral injury Promotes effective actions within the ELCA, via resolutions and materials Please write CHC" on your check or pew envelope. You can text your contribution to and enter the amount you wish to contribute- $25. After you hit send, you will receive a text with instructions on how to proceed. Download the GivePlus app and when prompted, enter the name of our church. As you type, usually a list will appear; select Our Saviour s Lutheran Church from the list. You re Invited- The Robbinsdale City Band (Nancy Nygaard Johnson is a member) is playing a concert TODAY Nov 11th at 4pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 4087 West Broadway in Robbinsdale. With a theme of We Remember, we ll remember the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day with several patriotic pieces, plus a variety of other numbers. Featured with the band will be the church s organ (celebrating 30 years), a violinist and a vocal solo by one of the band members.
